~ My turn! Your favourite Hermit...

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 10 Jul 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

kayne  10 Jul 2002
Alright Aeclecticans... I have been really enjoying reading why everyone likes a particular card and which is their favourite... so - The Hermit! Which one do you like best and why?

I really love the Hermit in (you guessed it...) The Cosmic Tribe... I really love the way Stevee Postman has made it so that you can see the scene of the tree through the figure and the arm reaches out from it and holds aloft the lantern. The figure stands at the enterance of an ancient building and the cresent moon can be seen within. His companion is good ol' Fluffy' :P

I also really like the Thoth Hermit. It is very dinamic and expressive.

Starfish  10 Jul 2002
The Gill Hermit - I love all of that glorious light in the darkness...

:T6P Starfish

Maan  10 Jul 2002
For me the world spirit hermit.
But i really like the sandman in the whimsical too:)

truthsayer  10 Jul 2002
my favorite hermit is from the wheel of change deck. it shows a man w/ a latern using a telescope to study the night sky. i like our eccentric he looks and that he has a purpose in his search. another favorite hermit is in the wild spirit deck. it's called the "healer--wise counselor". the card shows a woman at a table talking w/ someone having a cup of tea. she has a mortle and pestle to grind herbs. a cat is sitting nearby as if to listen. that card reminds me of myself sitting at the table listening to a friend. my cats nearby.

Pollux  10 Jul 2002
GILL!!!! :D

He's a snowy mountain peak, the image of solitude and remoteness. His lantern glows in the darkness, spreading light all around...

Starfish, you are doomed!!! HAHAHAHAHA })

I also like the Hermit of the COSMIC TRIBE, and the one from SPIRAL.

Pollux, you are bad! ;) Loving my Gill...

:T6P Starfish

emily2otters  10 Jul 2002
tarot nova, hands down!

sorry i can't post a picture...
he's a bald man with his eyes closed and his hands out as if he's in the middle of a tai chi move. reminds me of david carradine from "kung-fu", but more at peace with himself. there's an enormous snail shell that overlaps him and looks like it might even be attached... i guess he goes in there when he needs to be alone. very sweet.

Jewel  10 Jul 2002
Pollux you are just as predictable about your Gill as Kayne and I are about the Cosmic Tribe!!!! :P :P :P *LOL*

Well I am going to shock you all ... I have to think hard about this one. I love the Hermit card, I think it is because I would like to be the Hermit. I am going to go to my cave and ponder this one before answering, and may inclusively pull the hermit for all 80-however-many decks I have and make real sure before I answer this ... I never realized how important this card is to me ... hmmmmmm ....

Sorceress_Jade  10 Jul 2002
Thoth hands down. When I think of the Thoth deck, that's the first card that comes to mind. I appreciate that he doesn't seem as much the wise man overlooking his town, but more the man in solitude. He seems as though he is running from something, hiding, and being chased.

I love the wheat in this card. I can't even explain why, but it ads a lot of aesthetic value. I love that card.

Sally Gardens  10 Jul 2002
The Motherpeace Crone, Hecate at the crossroads, listening in the night. Awesome. Evocative of my inward, solitary, spiritual side.

the hermit  10 Jul 2002
My favorite hermit is... ME!

But my favorite Tarot card would be from the Tarot of the Old Path:
The Wise One

He fits my image of a druidic mage, which is how I view the Hermit.

what about herman's hermits? :D (for those of us old enough to know who they were)

Thirteen  10 Jul 2002
I'll second the "Hermans Hermits" and raise ya all the GREENWOOD hermit. Love that wintery hermit with the holly-leaves on his cloak and his secret tree house.

cricket  11 Jul 2002
If I remember right, there's a deck out there somewhere that the Hermit looks like a hippie out in the middle of nowhere. Faunabay, you know the one! We were laughing about it in the store. Help me?

Anyway, that's my favorite.

Thirteen:
I looked at the cards for Greenwood here on Aeclectic and think they're awesome.

Anybody know if more of the artwork is available online?

Looks like a deck an old druidic mage like me should have...

let's see... what WAS that help line phone number for tarot-o-holics?

mine, Mine, MINE!!!

deep breaths...
I'm ok... really... I'm ok... deeeeep breaths...

Ravenswing  11 Jul 2002
i gotta go with the gill on this one.

Hear that Pollux? another vote for your deck.

LVX and laughter :D (as he watches a deep purple gargoyle with a strange mop-top shock of hair climbing a stairway to heaven)
steve

Kyrielle  11 Jul 2002
I like the Wheel of Change Hermit, who looks like sort of a scientific hippie in his lab. Also the Templar Hermit, and the Tarot Nova Hermit, which brings a new meaning to "Hermit crab."

Hermit,

I can really recommend this deck even if it organizes the cards in a strange way in its book (I just ignore their organization and use the standard RW arrangement). They're just lovely and the Hermit is...BEAUTIFUL. It's the classic Hermit stance, a cloaked man holding a staff and a lantern--but the cloak, plush and with many folds, is pale green dotted with holly leaves and trimmed with fur about the hood. And our hermit, male or female it's impossible to tell, wears gloves as well against the chill of the winter landscape on which he stands. His lantern illuminates the base of a huge oak tree--there is a door of green wood leading into it, with light glowing through the slats from within--clearly his warm, secret home and hideaway. The card makes you ache to open that door, so you can see that hollow interior--with the Hermit's favorite rocking chair and some little fireplace--and with those winding stairs you KNOW are there--the ones that go underground to all kinds of secret rooms filled with books and tresures--maybe a ladder up to a sleeping nook in one of the larger branches? One with a secret window to gaze out on the world.

*Sigh*

Alas, no picture of him online, but try these websites for more images of the deck:

Riversea  11 Jul 2002
My favorite Hermit... I feel so boring on this, but it is just the old RW Hermit! I don't even own this deck, I have the UW.

There's something about the flat grey color used in the RW that I just love. This is probably the only card that I like better out of the RW over the UW.

Someday, I'll probably get a RW deck just so I can have him.

Sorceress_Jade  12 Jul 2002
I just wanted to share this one with you all. It would have to be my close second as favorites go. I really want a framed print of it.

This is a facinating image...
VERY moving.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi
Another vote here for the Wheel of Change Hermit, I like the studious look with his specks on the end of his nose.

Blessings

It reminds me of one of my favorite books when I was a child, "My Side of the Mountain," in which a young man goes off to the woods to live and spends the winter inside a home he created in a hollowed-out old tree.

Hmmm... Seems like my true calling was Hermit, even back then. Why didn't the high school guidance counselors mention this option? :D

raeanne  15 Jul 2002
Sally,
I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers that movie! The boy trained a falcon to help him hunt. Good story.

Jewel  15 Jul 2002
Well I am between three and cannot really narrow them down because I like them for different reasons, but alas I will go with Greenwood, Tarot of the Old Path AND Gill. Do not ask me to narrow them down as I cannot.

Jimilyn  15 Jul 2002
Vote #5 for the Gill.

I don't own this deck, but I *love* this hermit!!!!

I converted her to the Howling Gill Praise, as sister-light Jema called it.

You know, those "entities" you invoke when you hope to get new decks... I'll show you briefly:
Truthsayer/East/Air
Faunabay/South/Fire
Jewel/West/Water
Kiama/North/Earth
In some pantheons, you'll find Liliana or Lee as West, or Pollux or Kaz or Maan as East, Kayne or Jymilin as South, or Jema or Catlin as North... there are tons, you know. But the ones I listed first are the most powerful... The Queens.

P.S. Jewel, now tell me, don't I deserve a free deck for making you get a Gill? *weaseling, but serious!* LOL :D

Kellinator  15 Jul 2002
I think my favorite Hermit so far is the mad scientist in the Halloween Tarot. That's probably my favorite RW clone deck.

Jimilyn  16 Jul 2002
ROFL!!! Oh my goodness, Hermit! That's hysterical!
...jimilyn falls out of chair and has trouble climbing back up because of laughing...

Kellinator, yep, the mad scientist is great...makes me think a little bit of Uncle Fester. :D

~giggles~ that is so funny and so appropriate *LOL*. And you know, water and west trully are meaningful to me in my life. But I do believe you have listed the most compulsive of us taroholics.

Now Pollux, I really do like the Gill, but please do not be totally confused ... THE COSMIC TRIBE RULES!!!!!... if you don't believe me just ask Kayne *LOL*.

Now ... as for this free deck plee ... what did you have in mind? I mean you have the Gill right? what else do you need? ~giggles~

pollux, you are too funny! i don't know if aeclectic can handle my new alter ego as the east air corner for invoking for new decks. if you invoke me you'll have an irrestible urge to buy the neferteri, sphynx, wheel of change, inner child cards or templar. there's probably a few more but i'll wait like a spider on a web. "come here, little tarot-holic....here's a nice new tarot deck for you!" as soon as the tarot-holic gets close enough, i throw some threads and snare my prey! Bwahahaha! another one bites the dust--er, deck. ;) :D

Liliana  16 Jul 2002
I already have a Templar urge, so thats where it came from ;)

Ok better late than never huh?

cricket - you're talking about the Cosmic Tarot Hermit. He looks like a 60's hippie out in the wilderness doing yoga hehehehehehe

faunabay  16 Jul 2002
My favorite by far is the Hermit from the Hudes deck!! I really can't even explain why exactly. He just looks so wise - got such a serene look on his white bearded face!!

My favorite is Lancelot as the Hermit in the Authurian Legend Tarot. I love the look & feeling I get from this card.

Ohhh my and there is someone on the trading forum wanting to trade their inner child ... just thought I would pass that on.

As the west water corner I would say that if you invoke me you will have an irresistible urge to buy the Cosmic Tribe, Tarot of the Old Path, Waking the Wild Spirit, Rhorig, Thoth, Amber, Greenwood, Celtic Wisdom, Ancient Egyptian, Navigators of the Mystic Sea, Tarot for Cats, Mage the Ascencion, 418 (in progress-unpublished) and the Mermaid deck that LoScarabeo has yet to publish *LOL*. But in invonking me you will probably have an urge many decks, this list is by no means exhaustive. What I can tell you is that it would not inclue: Tarot of Wicca, Victoria Regina (any black & white decks for that matter), and Gendron. You will definitely have an increased curiosity, and pull towards OOP decks as well.

Yours trully,
the wicked deck temptress from the west *LOL*

kayne  18 Jul 2002
LOL! We have similar taste in decks I think Jewel - I need to invoke you I think! :P

Mlle Lenormand  18 Jul 2002
My favourite Hermit is the one in the Hude Deck. He is a gentle hermit with a kindly face and suggests a feeling of contemplation, rather than a lonely figure in other decks.

Liliana  18 Jul 2002
I have an urge for over half the decks Jewel described, she must be my west lol

Invoking me in the center makes you immediately buy the Rohrig, then pine for other decks by German artists not avaiable in English like Ananda and Margaret Peterson. You also will find yourself craving Modern and Thoth based decks but not liking Thoth itself. This includes I am One, Haindl, Navigators of the Mystic Sea, Adrian, World Spirit, PoMo, and possibly Victoria Regina. Also a few darker decks or anime ones might pop their way into the collection. Some might also feel the need to buy Christian themed decks such as Tarot of the Saints for study purposes heh

You are a CORNER TOO!!! You ARE INVOKED - don't invoke!

By invoking Kayne people will have an urge to get Cosmic Tribe too, of course, and Rohrig, and mostly collector's decks, with non-traditional representations and modern artwork... (trying to guess...:P). OH!!! And you will be sending e-mails all over the world's Decks Publishers to get the KAYNE_CELTIC_TAROT and the 21 CENTURY TAROT published!!!
YYYYAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY
- I think we should really set up a backing-up committee for the last thing...

I also love the Hermit in 21 Century Tarot (what a ruffian ROFLOL). :D

Liliana  18 Jul 2002
I got to see the half finished 21st century chariot first of anyone neener ;)

gonna be better once kayne puts himself in it tho, its a great card hehe

I think he sent it to me to shut me up, Ive been harassing him about a new card for a month now ;)
