@ Question regarding Tarot-holics @

Do Tarot-holics TRADE decks?

My take on this is that they don't.
A Tarot-holic will keep a deck even if it does not appeal to them much.
It is always part of their collection...

*LOL I dared start this thread! I am shocked! I need some sleep...*

Maan  01 Jul 2002
Well if so i guess i'm not a tarotholic anymore couse i do trade :(

I only collect usable decks and really really pretty one's :)

Liliana  01 Jul 2002
Well of course they do, the thrill of the new aquisition is what they live for, so once that thrill is worn off with an old deck and they find themselves not able to afford a new one, theyl start getting twitchy and pretty soon theyl find another taroholic in the same situation, suffering from new deck withdraw, so theyll trade and their needs for a new deck will be filled before they take a gun to the local occult shop with a note reading "Give me all your Tarot decks or Ill shoot"

:THP

jema  01 Jul 2002
of course we do, we can always trade them back with someone else later:)

i got about 7 decks i will trade away after the summer.
(have to wait until catlin gets back at least)

Original Destiny  01 Jul 2002
:TFOOL... if i don't like the deck...its gotta go...I am much more cautious now. I do a lot of web research before I buy so the need to get rid doesn't occur often..:TMAGE

MystiqueMoonlight  01 Jul 2002
Did someone say trade? Where, who, what deck do they have. I've got a few to trade. Is it a set or deck? What country? Don't worry about the postage....

Oh it was a question...

Pulpatations...must calm down...blood pressure high....deep breath....OK

I'm not a tarotholic. Really, truly. But if there's a trade I'm there :)

Emily  01 Jul 2002
I am turning into a tarot-holic but I couldn't trade a deck lol - its not very often I make mistakes when buying decks, they have to be usable, I have 8, the only one I can't read with is the Robin Wood but I would never be able to trade it on, its not the decks fault I find it hard to use. Ahh well at least my Spiral likes me :)

We are both in Australia

what do you have that you would like to trade?

Postage wouldn't be too much (not that we care-anything for the deck you want hey!) Send me a PM if you like.

Here! Here! New aquisitions - that's what we live for!!! :D
Liliana, you've got us down, don't you!! ROFL

truthsayer  01 Jul 2002
i've started a list of the decks i have, the ones i've traded and for what, and the decks i had to have back that was traded. if i don't get an inclination to get the deck again then i know that deck was never mine. if i have to get it back then i never trade it again. i figure if i'm going to trade i've got to do it w/ integrity. innocent decks are at stake!! for example. i traded my faery wicca and had to get it back. now it's a permanent part of my collection.

sometimes i'm just broke but life is so boring w/o the hope and thrill of a new deck being in the mail. in those times, trading is my salvation. :D i think a hard core skidrow tarot-holic would come near signing a contract w/ the devil to get a new deck a week. trading is what helps us keep our souls! LOL

Pollux  02 Jul 2002
Wow truth! Your posts are always so enlightening! :D

I have learnt something more about tarot-holics.
I am even deeper in it now...
The day was not wasted. })

Liliana and faunabay, i understand your point perfectly. :)

BTW, I think I'll be an eclectic tarot-holic. If a deck enters my chambers, it is not going anywhere else. Probably because so far I only got cute and polite decks, willing to be read... But, in truth, I think whatever deck I'd get I would not trade it. There are decks I don't like and others that are obscene, but I would keep them all the same! })

Kiama  02 Jul 2002
I don't trade decks anymore. Usually, I trade other items for decks if I can, such as Divinaton kits, or if there is a trade up I'll ask if I can buy it! I don't like getting rid of mydecks, and since I pretty much KNOW which decks Iwant, they are all ones which I treasure.

Kiama

Liliana  03 Jul 2002
Yes I got you down because Im one too ;)

Of course there are certain decks I wont get rid of even if I dont use them much

Stuff like the World Spirit, which I love but cant get into reading with right now, because it was part of THE consecration (A few members understand this), or the ones I won from Tarotgarden because I never win ANYTHING lol

Of course the only time i traded i traded a book not a deck, good thing too because one I considered trading I decided to keep since it was my first serious learning deck and I still love the Courts (Spiral)

But there is still a Connolly hanging around that I think I want to trade, but I like 1 card in it lol (The one with looks like Jesus sitting at the table with a cup with a rose growing out of it)

tigerlily  03 Jul 2002
I think it doesn't have to do anything with being taroholic or not ... more with being a packrat (I hope I remembered the right word and didn't write anything obscene ). I have some decks I positively hate (Aquarian, anyone?), but I would never give them away. I'm like a dragon on its treasure: what's mine, is mine, stays mine! ;)

truthsayer  03 Jul 2002
yes, packrat is the right word. nothing obscene about it. i think you're right but it's hard to admit to oneself the truth. ;)

I am a tarot-holic, and a PAKRAT now!!!

YYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!! :D

Jeannette  03 Jul 2002
Did someone say "Tarot-holic?"

Guilty.

In twenty years of collecting, I've only traded away two decks that I didn't have duplicates of.

One trade I immediately regretted, and went out and bought another copy (good thing, too, because it went from being hard-to-find to being nearly-impossible-to-find almost immediately after that).

The other trade I didn't immediately regret... but I do now. I've never been able to replace that one.

Needless to say, I've never made the same "mistake" since...

Jeannette, and you think you can leave us like that?

Once you told us the SIN, you must tell us the OBJECT OF SIN too - provided "sin" is relevant to anyone on here...

I want the names! :D :D :D

P.S. I see that TarotHolic+PAKRAT is quite widespread after all... :D *LOL*

Jimilyn  04 Jul 2002
Oh dear! Jeannette has me worried now.

You see, I'd been wondering if it might be a fun and interesting thing to get duplicates of more popular trading decks. That way, I could keep *my* deck, but still have the thrill of the trade.

Does that mean I'm beginning to have serious or advanced symtoms of tarotholism??? I thought I was just a regular, run-of-the-mill tarotholic.

hahaha, Diana, good point. I totally blame my fellow aeclecticians for the fact that I now have 9 decks and I suspect more on the way.

Jimilyn

jimilyn, dear, you have a correlating condition that frequently happens to tarot-holics in early advanced stages. you enjoying trading but not enough to give up favorite decks. this is called trade-o-philia=lover of trades. i have this also but i don't buy extra decks. i like to tempt fate by trading decks i like for a passing fancy and then see if i can get the favored deck back. of course, there are times i like the new trade equally well. so far i've been able to get back in trade the ones i wanted back. some decks i haven't wanted back. this is called trading for the sake of the thrill. this is when a tarot-holic has lost all reason and is getting out of control. evidently, i am approaching the last part of the advanced stages of tarot-holism. this generally involves a pact w/ the chief resident of a subterranean warmer climate. i hear his favorite cologne is sulfur...we'll see... :D

ppl whose collection is over 100 decks and getting more everyday are rumored to have already signed said pact.

diana and marion: you guys are too funny!

fairyhedgehog  04 Jul 2002
Well, I can't buy any more decks for the foreseeable future as my husband was /not/ amused by my getting the Inner Child cards. Trouble is, amazon purchases show up on our Visa statement, which he always checks.

So, no more decks for me.

That doesn't mean I can't look though. There's some interesting decks on ebay at the moment. I'm just looking, you understand ....

Pollux  04 Jul 2002
Fairyhedgehog, maybe ALIDA and E-BAY purchases DON'T show up on your Visa statement...

You might want to try that ;)

*I wonder: am I doing well enough as a tarot-holic? })*

Ah, Pollux, my friend... it's so tempting to say "what does it matter?" For me, regret would follow trading away any tarot that was potentially difficult or impossible to replace... this I have now proved to myself...

However, if you must know...

(What's that? Do I hear the words "We must! We must!" echoing from other tarot-holics in the distance?)

...the one I was eventually able to replace was the PAPA Spiritual Tarot, which is, IMHO, one of the ugliest tarots I've ever seen. Admittedly, I've chatted with others who do not agree, but in any case, I'm not letting this one go. (And I did confess on another thread to having a subsection within my larger collection which has been designated the "ugly, worthless decks" section. So, there's a home for every type of tarot here... LOL!)

The one I haven't replaced is an early edition of the "Daughters of the Moon" tarot -- the original black-and-white edition. I traded it away because I liked the later color edition better, but of course, now I wish I'd kept it -- if for no other reason, so I would have had a copy to scan for inclusion in the Tarot Garden database. A few of the card designs changed between the earlier and later editions, too, so it would have made a very nice compare-and-contrast piece.

There... I feel psychologically "cleansed" now... tee hee! Thanks, Pollux!

Jimilyn: Well, if you're looking for someone to dissuade you from buying extras for trading, maybe I can help. Assuming that the purpose of trading decks is to achieve a result that's mutually beneficial to both parties, there's really only two reasons to arrange a trade:

1) Each party has a tarot that they don't want, and the exchange allows each person to get a deck they do want. It's not economically prudent to purposely buy copies of a deck you don't want for yourself (including extra copies of a deck you do like), because your likely trade options will be for decks in approximately the same price range that you could have bought for yourself in the first place.

2) Each party is able to obtain one or more extra copies of a tarot that is hard-to-find elsewhere, and furthermore that each is able to obtain those copies at a lower-than-typical price. This allows for an equitable exchange that results in a net savings for both parties. The key word here being "equitable" -- for example, even if one person had the outrageous good fortune of obtaining a "Servants of the Light" deck for $15 today, I don't think that anyone would deem it fair to be offered a common "Unicorn" tarot in return, even if the Unicorn tarot is similarly priced at $15. The value of the "Servants" tarot on today's market is running between $150 and $300, and IMHO, it's the value that should count in trading HTF decks, not the actual price paid.

So, unless you like to trade strictly for the thrill of the trade itself, and aren't worried about whether or not the result adds something of interest to your own collection, I'd probably recommend against buying a lot of in-print U.S. Games decks for trading purposes, if you catch my drift.

How's that for a little "preventative medicine?"

tsk, tsk, truthsayer, this sounds like it may be getting serious!
I've actually psychologically rationalized my brain Out of Tarot-a-holism lately . (I don't have the Extreme Need to buy anymore , at least temporarily!) That way I can stop torturing my psyche SO much when I don't have the money for a deck! I just decided one day that out of the decks I want , I want the "mermaid" the most. And since IT won't be for sale until next year, I Could wait until then to buy any new decks. It worked! (it's been about 2 weeks now!) (I still have a "wish list" over 50 decks long!)This calms the nerves and the wallet a little! This just goes to prove how easy rationalization is , and how anything can be rationalized! :) .

Fairyhedgehog, my significant other still hasn't a clue I bought those 2 decks a few weeks ago, and he never will!
Anyhow, you Needed the Inner Child Deck! I'm sure of it! Besides, he probubly spends on non-necessities.

Jeannette, oh yes! A black and white Daughters of the Moon deck. I Did see one on E bay awhile back. And it didn't go for that much either. Maybe $35 . I would really like to get ahold of one. BUT I would really like the little colored pencils that came with the original deck ( ?) OR some surefire easy method to color them myself and put a finish on them.

the hermit  09 Jul 2002
Wow!
I must be in REAL trouble.
I've already got over 20 decks and I've only been registered on the forum for a few days!
Let's take a stroll back here in the hermit cave...
Don't mind the echoes, but watch out for that pile of crystals...
NO! don't touch the book of shadows...
I know, but the maid is afraid to come down here...
Him? Oh that's just Phred, the phat rat... or maybe he's a packrat?
He doesn't bite... at least I don't think he does.
Over there on the shelf are the Tarot cards... ummmm, they seem to have multiplied since I last counted them!

TRADE? You must be mad!
Their mine! ALL MINE, YOU HEAR?

Maan  09 Jul 2002

Well, just remember...
If you laugh, the world laughs with you...
But if you cry, you just get runny mascara!

Well I must agree with Truthsayer ... although the only time I have traded a deck I did not think I could part with it was to a very good friend :) ... I am more of the order of going out and buying them a new deck. I am learning to part with decks better though *LOL*

~Looks at Truthsayer & Faunabay~ I have a pen when we are ready to sign that pact ... we must all be very close to that point now *LOL*

the hermit  10 Jul 2002
I have this strange vision of a huge group of scaly tarot-o-holics, hidden deep down in musty caves, sitting atop their piles of tarot decks, claws pecking away on their computer keyboards, smoke drifting from their nostrils as they snarl and bellow at any hapless being who dares to venture too close.

And how do you stop 'em from burning the village down when the local new age store doesn't get that special order deck in on time?

Maybe I shouldn't have watched "Dragonslayer" so many times?
