Fantasy Tarot Shoppe

I hear some of us wishing they had better metaphysical stores nearby to buy decks at. Say you owned your own Metaphysical Shoppe but only had room to keep up to 9 decks in stock regularly and one deck as your 'special display'. What Tarot decks would you keep in inventory?

I think I would have the Hanson-Roberts, Spiral, Witches, New Palladini, World Spirit, Diamond, Gill, Moon Garden and the Tarot of the Old Path. I'd have to have a special seasonal display for the Halloween Tarot.

VGimlet  10 Aug 2002
I would keep the classic RWS, Universal RWS, Swiss Thoth, the Tarot of the Marseilles, Robin Wood, Victoria Regina, Cosmic Tribe, Osho Zen, and the Aquarian. My other deck would be a "deck of the month" that I could promote for the season, or other reason.

jmd  10 Aug 2002
Only nine decks?

9 Tarot of Marseilles! :)

On a less... err, I mean, more serious note, I would keep the following nine:My display deck would also be the most recently designed deck mentioned in this list: the Camoin Marseilles... but I have no specific preference, of course!

Liliana  10 Aug 2002
9 decks to fill every type of personality, well let me see here

Univeral Waite
Small Thoth
Marseilles (to hit the 3 classic styles)
Cosmic Tribe (for gays and other more open people)
World Spirit (applicable for any race, including those pesky blue people ;) )
Osho Zen (see the other side of the coin)
I Am One (for the personal side)
Rohrig (for a more modern feel and its my FAVORITE)
Haindl (for those who want a variety of systems to study with their tarot)

Oh wait I forgot Spiral for those who need help with court cards, since Spiral has the best ones of those, and I forgot a Golden Dawn deck to hit on tradition, oh well with only 9 cant get everything :)

My special displays would change from time to time and they would be selfpublished decks like the Book of Chaos, which many people may never see otherwise.

:THP

divinerguy  10 Aug 2002
1. Rider-Waite
2. Thoth, regular size, gray border
3. Robin Wood
4. The Mini-motherpeace
5. The Voyager
6. The Witches Tarot (the Cannon-Reed one)
7. A Marseilles style deck
8. Osho Zen
9. Cosmic Tribe
10. The Goddess Tarot

Hi All! It *is* hard trying to narrow it down to 9 decks. I chose that number because I was thinking of the smaller, 1-person owned metaphysical shoppes around where I live. Their inventory is without fail small, but sometimes you can find some unusual decks there. So I was trying to see what it would be like to actually have to choose 9 or 10 decks. Actually 9 decks is more than what some of them carry around here.

I would love to own a small metaphysical shoppe that carried Tarot, but alas- my CPA hubby says it is financially very risky and really not feasible. :(

*P.S. I spell 'shop' as 'shoppe' when talking about metaphysics because 'shop' reminds me of a car repair garage!

midnightmerry  10 Aug 2002
Everyone's selections are very good so far. How could I have forgotten about my beloved VR? Also, I'm wondering if I would have to squeeze in the UW somewhere. It is such a staple of Tarot.

Cerulean  10 Aug 2002
My metaphysical suggestion would be 9 variations on a standard.

1. Rider Waite:
Diamond Tarot
2. Round/Church art/Rider Waite:
Tarot of the Cloisters
3. Rider-Waite cultural clone:
St. Petersburg
4. Gilded Marseilles variation:
Visconti-Gold
5. Old style tarot variation
Silver Mantegna
6. Thoth workalike/Fantasy/Large-Size
Rohrig
7. Majors only, medieval style
Lovers Tarot (Lyle)
8. Walk-like-an-Egyptian
Nefertari Gold
9. Humerous
Tarot Nova

If I got to change my displays monthly, then I'd do 9 historical, fantasy, animal, mythology, international, anime, modern art, other art styles, feel-good, Christian and meditative masters (Buddhist, East Indian, Native American, etc.)....

truthsayer  11 Aug 2002
gosh! i may just do all specialty decks! LOL
my specialty would revolve around self-published or foreign decks like: neferteri, ananda, margarete peterson, greenwood, merryday, i am one, william blake, AECELCTIC, transformational, mountain dream, rohrig, and templar. a different deck for every month. chosen more for uniqueness and difficulty to get than beauty.

1. universal waite or hanson roberts
2. wheel of change or world spirit for multicultural
3. nigel jackson or robin wood
4. tarot of the sphynx or ancient egyptian(egyptian, of course!)
5. waking the wild spirit or greenwood(pagan)
6. victoria regina or BOTA(black and white/historical)
7. a brian williams deck--probably the pomo but there's also the renaissance, minchiate and now ship of fools to choose from
8. glastonbury or celtic wisdom or legend arthurian(for a celtic/arthurian style)
9. inner child or whimsical or halloween(cards of inner children or children)
10. cosmic or cosmic tribe for something cosmic ;)

my stock of 9 and the specialty decks would be revolving so no one would get tired of my selection. why should i please everyone when everyone else here has the rws and the thoth in their tarot store? :D ;) :*

what about books? you can't have a tarot store w/o books? what about tarot totes? gotta have homes for those decks! do we keep an oracle or 3 to the side? ;) this is fun!!!!

the hermit  11 Aug 2002
First thing I'd do is go out and rent a bigger store :D

Then I'd just stuff as many decks, books, candles, rocks, incense, statues, tote bags, boxes as I could cram in plus some tables and chairs and a back room for readings... oh and don't forget the coffee bar!
I'd probably go broke in a year, but I'd have FUN :D

And of course the name would be...

"the hermit's cave"

I'll let y'all know when I win the lottery :)

Liliana  11 Aug 2002
Yeah and you could give guided tours of your cave for a price too ;)

:THP

midnightmerry  11 Aug 2002
SSShhhhhh...don't put ideas into Hermit's head, Liliana!!

But I loved your idea, Hermit! It really would be a Fantasy Tarot Shoppe, wouldn't it?

raeanne  11 Aug 2002
There is a vacant lot just down the street from my house. It is zoned as commercial so I could build a store there without any legal issues. (Of course I don’t have the money to do this, but to daydream is free!) This vacant lot is only a half a block away from the high school so it has a good location. Anyway, I would build a pyramid shaped building as my store. The basement would have a meeting room that could be rented out or used for lessons or any other group gathering. The upper portion of the pyramid would house the offices for employees or maybe another smaller meeting room or meditation room. I would have at least the following tarot decks:
Celtic Dragon (or Dragon Tarot for all the dragon lovers)
Cosmic Tribe (for the youth and vitality this deck has and the 3 Lovers cards)
Legends: the Arthurian Tarot (for modern day chivalry)
Marseilles (for the traditionalists)
Robin Wood (for the pagans)
Thoth (for the historians)
Universal Waite (for the beginners)
Vision Quest (for the native American followers)
World Spirit (for anyone)

I would also have a “feature of the month” deck, which would include such favorites as Victoria Regina, Tarot of the Cat People, Nigel Jackson, etc., etc.

I would have crystals and stones of different types. Jewelry and tools like pendulums and dowsing rods would also be included. The biggest problem I would have would be with scented candles and incense. I am horribly sensitive to fragrances, some of which even make my air passages swell and I can’t breathe. Maybe I could have a room with an extra good ventilation system so I could have a variety of scented items. I would also like to have someway of blocking all the radio and TV signals from passing through my body all day long. I know this sounds stupid, but when I was a child, most radio and TV stations went off the air at night. Our bodies got a chance to recover from all the “noise”. Few people today have ever experienced what it is like to not have these frequencies bombarding you all the time. It is very peaceful and much easier to meditate when you can get away from these radio and TV waves. Unfortunately, I live in an area where I just don’t think I would do enough business each day to keep this store open. It sure would be nice.

midnightmerry  11 Aug 2002
Raeanne, I have to agree with you about TV/Radio noise! Ever notice how peaceful it is when the power goes out? You don't realize how much noise is generated by electronic devices until they shut down. Then it's like a big sigh of relief to realize how quiet things can be without out all that electronic hum in the background.

Everyone is coming up with some great ideas for a fantasy tarot shoppe. If I ever *do* get to open a shoppe like this (a dream, for sure), I'm sure it would be better from the ideas presented here. And yes, I probably would have to have a lot more than 9 or 10 decks! lol

Cerulean  11 Aug 2002
I noticed once a 'psychic' who had a shop near an outdoor mall and multistory mall, near a beachfront. So the wind always blew and people were always walking by.
Suppose you were by an artistic community/gift shop area and you had a Good Vibrations sort of shop/bookstore. Let someone else nearby have the soap and candle crowd and you have the magical paper goods...I saw a website for art stamp people who even suggested they'd make up packets of assorted tarot cards from different decks for collaging...my tarot collection instincts cringed.
Well, if you ever get to San Francisco, they'ved got that pyramid-shaped TransAmerica building...maybe the vibes there would help.
I like your magical nines and pyramid associations---maybe someday you'll showcase Nine Gold & Silver decks for holiday time.
Mari...

HURRY! HURRY! HURRY! STEP RIGHT UP FOR THE TOUR OF A LIFETIME!!!
See the enigmatic bearded man in the hooded robe.
Watch him peer into his crystal ball.
See him reach into his hoard of secret symbol cards.
Watch as he performs arcane spells handed down to him by the Magi sages.
That’s right folks, for just ten cents… one thin dime you can step down into “the hermit’s cave” and see how the ancient arts of magick and divination are performed!

Watch your head sir… don’t tease the dragon sonny, it hasn’t been feed today.

It’s a great dream. I’ve always wanted to run a bookstore, and a metaphysical one would seem to me to be a dream come true… * sigh *

Phoenix  11 Aug 2002
Lets see....

ROFL..... for just a dime, Sir, I'd swing it.

Owning a bookstore is a dream of hubby's and mine, too. Only of course, I'd be leaning toward the metaphysical side and hubby toward the literature/business side. We balance each other out, so who knows, maybe it would work.

What can I say... I'm a cheap date :)

purplelady  14 Aug 2002
(Well you asked!) I would want to have as Large a variety of tarot decks as possible. So I would try to carry as complete an inventory as I could of All the major publishers. And I would have them in stock on a shelf , (the way the books in a book store are) so that customers could browse the decks the way they could books. ( I know, thievery would be a problum, maybe each deck could have a thin strip of magnetic tape on the outside celophane or something!) There would also be a "sample" open box for every deck for customers to look through. I would Not keep the decks only behind the counter. There would also be a good selection of books, and lots of smelly stuff like incense and a large selection of essential oils. Maybe some art like dream catchers and even some scrying balls.

~Gasps~ 9 decks only?!!!?!!! I could never consider that my 'fantasy' that is for sure ~giggles~ ... but I know what you were getting at so I will quit being tacky and cooperate *LOL* ...

Well if I can only have 9 then I think I will specialize mainly in hard to find or OOP decks (with the exception of a few favorites)and carry:

1. Tarot for Cats (entirely too cute not to include)
2. Greenwood (pagan and earthy feel)
3. Tarot Ambre (collectible)
4. Romeo & Juliet Tarot (Luigi Scapini - have you seen the packaging? another collectible)
5. Ananda (breathtaking ... good for meditation and intuitive readers)
6. Vision Quest (Native American deck - comfort deck)
7. Ancestral Path (multicultural deck)
8. Mage the Ascencion (dark deck, neat art)
9. Cosmic Tribe (because it rules!)
10. Robin Wood (because it has a soft spot in my heart)

I will rotate the rare and OOP decks on the display. I did not include the Thoth, RWS or Marseilles because you guys have them covered and I can ONLY have 10 decks! (otherwise I would have them all AND in all sizes!) *LOL*

midnightmerry  15 Aug 2002
Hmmmm. Good point about the 9 decks not exactly fulfilling a fantasy... however, some of you are going ahead & describing your fantasy shoppe (lots of decks and all), so let's continue on that vein, shall we?? :)

Jewel, you may revise your shoppe if you wish and include everything you ever wanted to have!
