Hey everyone!!
I just started reading tarot and I am finding that when I read for people they never really have any questions to ask or are to afraid to ask. Is it ok to do a reading for someone if they don't have a specific question? Maybe they want to know what the cards say about their life. If so, what kind of thought process should I go through to prepare for this kind of reading?
Thanks all!!

"Sorry son, you can't have it both ways."

HI Tory,
a specific question is not required. You can phrase it as "What are general influences around this person?" or, "How do things seem to be heading in the next six months?.
There are a number of spreads that are quite general (lots in different threads here) that cover general readings.
here is one:
Little medicine wheel
...........1................
2.........5..............3
............4...............
1 Messages from your intuition
2 Message from your body
3 Message from your emotions
4 message from your spirit
5 next phase in your life
As for what kind of thought process you go through, I do not think it would be different than for any other reading. Whatever you mentally do to prepare yourself to read.
BTW: I moved your thread to Talking Tarot, since it is a general question for discussion.

Hi Tory!
What I do when someone doesn't have a specific question, is this. I ask my guides (or higher power) to help bring through accurate information about whatever it is they need to know about right now. Sort of "Cosmic Priority" if you will. I have had the opposite experience as well...They ask a specific question, and get information that has NO bearing whatsoever on it, but what does come through is usually something that is pretty important, and they may need to know about it.

I've found that lots of people want a reading but don't have a question in mind. My favorite spread in that case is a 15 card, 3 column Past-Present-Future reading I picked up from the Voyager tarot and then revised slightly. Basically, it divides a person's life into 5 categories: Physical/Health, Mental/Academic, Emotional/Love, Spiritual/Community and Social/Friendships and gives a general view of where a person has been in the past, where they are now, and what the future trends are.
Sometimes after an easy general spread like this, people think of questions or want to focus on one category in particular.

I agree with every post so far, and I recognized the spread Marion suggested as one of those in the Vision Quest LWB... :D
That LWB is lovely and precious.
Dark Electric posted for me as well. ;)
When I find myself in this situations, I do like she does. And the opposite effect happened too once or twice so far. You might simply want to ask the question: "what is there that I need to know right now?". Or, to make things easier for you, enquire if there is a specific "field" the querent is interested in - like friendhips/relationships, money, family, whatever... Anyway, this does not imply thay the cards will remain on topic with the question, as we said previuosly: it may well happen that the field needing the querent's attention is not the one they asked about, or one slightly linked to that one.

I agree with what has been posted so far - there is no need to have a specific question and a look at influences or issues surrounding a person will give a 'general reading'.
There are a lot of spreads you could use for this - as well as those mentioned you could check out the Astrological Spread - there is a good thread on that one and also the Romany or Gypsy spread, which is very 'free form'
Trying to put yourself in the right frame of mind and make contact with your guides or your 'higher' self is also good.

Thanks Everyone, I'll will definately work with those suggestions.
I haven't yet gotten to the point where I can tie more than three cards together, so I hope the more practise I get it will become a little easier.
Cheers!!
