when i do a spread for someone else, i let the person pick the cards if the Q wants to. other wise after Q cuts the deck, i pick the cards.

I don't "pick" them, I just take them off the top of the deck ;) :D

I have let the Querent shuffle the deck and then cut it into three piles and choose which pile I will use. I then take the cards from the top of the that pile.

It really depends on who am doing it for! Obviously we can't have the Q shuffle and cut the decks for readings online, so I do it, while thinking about who wants to know something. Usually works for me..but I have another ?
Do you think that the throw is likely to be 'less' accurate for online readings as the querant isn't physically present to put their energy and self into the cards?

Ming,
Are you referring to a question of what supernatural force (or not) might be behind the ordering or emergence of tarot cards in a reading?
If that is your question, I don't think it's totally me. It's something else, because I have no control or knowledge of what is going on in the deck . It could be the quantum physics of synchronicity, or something else we don't know about. The Big Whatever. I think Id rather not know exactly - more interesting.

Physical Realm:
I shuffle while the querent is talking and then ask them to cut the deck into three piles and put them back together however they choose.
Metaphysical Realm:
I believe in synchronicity coming into play, as opposed to divine intervention. The right cards will be there because its the time and place for them to be there- and its my job to interpret them in a way that is meaningful and helpful for both myself and the querent.
Sometimes 'odd' things happen that I have no explanation for, though. Recently A friend of mine in a initiatory magical order (the OTO to be specific) asked me to see if this was the time for him to take a certain Initiation- he had some doubts because of finances and health.
I used the Crowley deck and a common 15 card spread... the three cards in the center were: The Magus, The Magus, and the Sun.
I'd ~never~ forgotten to remove the extra two Magus cards from a reading before. :) But this time I did... and it was certainly relevant for the reading. Synchronicity at its finest.

Somewhat similar to Minderwiz. I let the Q cut the deck into 3 piles & choose which pile I will use. Then I take the cards from the top of the pile. BUT I don't let the Q shuffle. :)
I also agree with Laurel. I believe synchronicity plays a big part on the right cards turning up.

Why don't you let the querant shuffle? In most books I've read on tarot, they've said that the querant must shuffle the deck and focus on the question involved, then they cut the deck.
Perhaps it's each to his own and what you feel comfortable with

Hmmm? They must? :D
What about the people I've read for online? :D
I don't feel I have to follow what's written in a book just because it's been published. I only apply what works best for me and whatever makes me most comfortable. :)
When I do a reading for another, I only let that person touch my deck to cut it and choose the pile (or cards). Some people (like my fiance`) won't even let you touch the cards at all because of some tradition. :)
