Yay!!!!!
I did my first face-to-face reading tonight that WASN'T a friend who would be forgiving if I was totally off base.
This person works at my chiropractor's office, and we talked the other day and I mentioned i read tarot, and she asked for a reading!
It went fine! I was sort of nervous, cause I've only read for friends and my sister, and YOU guys! :*
Anyway, the reading went great, lots of information, and lots of confirmations about how the cards related to her life. We did it at her friends house, and they said they would like readings, so are going to call and set up times. weeeee!!!
It's not so bad! I didn't croak! yay!!

Ah Well done, it is scary reading for someone other than friends etc. I have only done it once, it was okay, but I had to explain that tarot and really most forms of divination cannot give him all the "answers"!

tell those who ask for a reading what they can and can't expect from the cards
the biggest problem is always that people expect too much:
- they expect exact answers (yes/no, when, ...)
- they don't really have a question but want to know their
entire future
- they don't feel they need to help interpreting the cards
because they think you need to prove your "skills"
cripes - it took me months to get my own wife to understand these things, and she sometimes still asks me to "just read the cards" and then sits there, just listening and waiting for me to reveal what she should do (when she doesn't even know about "what" we're talking)
heck, congrats anyway - it feels great when things "klick" and you feel you've done a good job

thanks y'all for the support!
any of you that read face-to-face, what do you tell people "ethically"?
i tried to start off saying, you know, the reading isn't set in stone, you make your own choices and life, etc, and she was like, "yeah yeah, do the reading".
i feel it's really important to tell people that we are just looking at one aspect of their lives, they are responsible for their own choices, but my "speech" pretty much flopped on her.
anyone have a good quick one?

well, napaea ... I don't have any standard formula's to help people understand what the tarot can or cannot do - but I avoid telling it "quickly".
I guess it's the way you tell them, the seriousness in your own voice and posture, the calm confidence with which you tell them something that gets them listening - well; most of the times.
The content is always about the fact that maybe "destiny" in large lines is a set thing, but the near future or outcome of specific situations are not fixed. I also tell them that the tarot is a way to understand things, to get extra insights, and to find knowledge that can be translated into large lines of advice. I also tell them a few things about the Thoth-deck I use, because I know those cards can freak people who aren't used to tarot-readings: it adds a bit to the occult-mystery feel of the setting.
In the end - it's all about selling the thing, no matter how honest you are - you've got to sell it, and make a "deep" impression on people to get taken seriously.
I usually abhore marketing-theories and business procedures that take a lot away from "honest" interaction, but ... well, people just need to be sold something, and if you do honest work - it doesn't matter that much if you do some "hocus-pocus" to get it sold (probably shouldn't have said that - I'll get heckled for that here).
