I've recently been told that if I don't get a cloth bag for my cards, they don't work and lose their "power"...Is this true? Or is it just what some people say because that's the way they do tarot?

You can keep your cards in whatever kind of container you like. Some people use bags, some use boxes, some people just keep the cards in the box they came in. There are no hard and fast rules. Many people do believe that silk protects the cards from unwanted psychic energies and so wrap their cards in silk or use a bag with a silk lining.
Hope that`s helped.

Well, some people also keeps them in Crown Royale Bags (Thank you Lunalafey! :D).
Or in Jack Daniels tins... Just ask Liliana! ;)
I keep them in velevet bags I do myself, with the help of my aunties (they run turns *LOL*).
As Crystalminx said, there's no RULE. As in almost everything related to Tarot Cards.
Possibly, you might like to get a pretty Bag & Cloth Set if you are a professional reader, and have to deal with stranger customers: that could obviously make a very good impression! ;)

Hi ChrisZ, I hope you don't mind, I'm moving this thread to Talking Tarot, 'cause Tarot Decks is usually where people post if they want to discuss specific decks. Great question! I agree with crystalmynx and Pollux.

I keep all my decks in bags, but that's just because I like pretty bags... ;)
I bought some from Tarot Totes, and I made several myself.
But as the others have already said: you should do what's right for you!

Hi ChrisZ, I too keep my in tarot bags. I buy them from tarot totes website. They address is:http://www.tarottotes.com/ They have gorgeous bags, most are priced at between $5-$6 and I have bought one for every deck I own. I like displaying them in baskets on a shelf in my bedroom.

Hi all,
"I like displaying them in baskets on a shelf in my bedroom."
I make my bags out of velvet and line them in cotton (no special reason for the cotton, I have the cotton and it's easier to sew than Satin). I like the idea of displaying them in a basket....will have to find a huge basket, I'm a bit of a taroholic..lol
If you want to see some of my bags there at: www.geocitie.com/magickcottage
I think I like the idea of anything goes..the only adivse I have is read on a clean surface..keeps the cards clean and esier to shuffle.
Good reading..

Putting a rubber band around your cards can damage them & form a crease over time.
Getting your decks into bags & out of the boxes saves wear & tear on the original box, which is good if you ever want to sell or trade the deck later.
Bags are also convenient for transporting the cards & protecting them at the same time. Plus, if you have drawstring bags, you can hang the decks you arent using from hooks.

ChrisZ: They won't lose their "power"... but they can get damaged. Bags and boxes are ideal for protection. :)
I wrap my cards in silk... or put them in a buri-box.
Momof3girls: Thanks for the Tarot Totes link. I can't access it at the moment (probably underconstruction). But I'll definitely check it out later. :)

I am a huge fan of Tarot Totes. I keep my decks that came in deck-book sets in their bags. The decks I own that came in their own small boxes I keep in the box, with my favorites inserted, box and all, into a Tarot Totes bag.
Keeping the decks in their own small boxes can prevent card warping if the deck has a tendency to do so.

I like keeping them in bags. Feels more mystical. LOL. I like to make my own bag if I can, or someone I know and trust. Just so I know good energy has gone into it.
Blessings.

I think it's best to do something for each deck, if only because this keeps you thinking about them for a time.
There are some decks I keep in special boxes that I built myself from wood scraps, and others I keep in the box they came in. For plain or flimsy cardboard boxes like the Scarabeo decks come in, I usually firm them up by embalming them on the outside with clear library tape.
The decks I use most often, I keep in a black steel box I got from Office Max. It's meant to hold 3x5" index cards. I lined the inside of it with fake black velvet held in with rubber cement, and I pasted the picture of the World card from the otherwise decayed box the Parisian Tarot came in on top. One such box will hold 2 decks. It's current denizens are the Parisian Tarot and the Ancient Lombardy.
