Buying Tarot Decks

I just placed an order at amazon.com for Tarot De Paris and I Am One tarot decks. The tarotholic in me just could not resist! I've been obsessed with doing this for days!
But now I'm feeling frustrated and fed up with amazon.com. The main problum is that they usually ship UPS and one has to be home to answer the door and recieve the package. I'm at work a lot now and not always home! In an E mail to amazon a few months ago , they told me I could call after I placed my order and request USPS instead of UPS.
So , when I placed my order today , I called , and they told me , new policy, cannot request a certain mail carrier.
Frustrated , I went to my order , where in the past , amazon gave one the option to change or cancel order.
Well , that part has changed too. The order (even though I just placed it and it isn't even close to shipping yet) cannot be altered or cancelled in any way!
Truthfully, I don't know whether I really want to cancel , because I really want those decks! AND I got a very good price BUT , I AM fed up with amazon and their new way of doing things .
Does anyone know of an online store a lot like amazon but that for sure ships USPS ? I will be searching for somewhere new that's for sure. ( Even though I've ordered much good stuff from amazon in times past :( )
p.s. Now I most likely get to deal with UPS and hope I can get the package delivered when I'm home And deal with my boyfriend who I may not be able to hide it from and has decided that I can't buy any more decks and may have a fit (he just doesn't get it , 'ya know? ;) .)

At the very least, you can call and complain that you can't alter your order before it ships. That's really annoying. Is there any way that you could have your stuff shipped to your work? That's what I have to do. Amazon boxes are pretty standard so no one will know that you're getting tarot stuff. Just an idea. Though who knows if they'll let you change the address now.

As for other stores, well, I haven't really found any with the same low pricing for new items. However, I have bought from Tarot Garden and Joan Bunning's store with good results.

Hope it works out because the Tarot de Paris is really quite lovely. It got me out of my tarot slump. Oh yeah! If you order the Tarot de Paris from the artist's website you get your book signed and a free print of any card from the deck. Just an alternative.

used to be if you took their slowest method of shipping it came by postal service here in u.s.

media mail is what they've sent me... slow, but cheap and by postal carrier

Right, lots of people just have these kinds of things delivered to them at their workplace, or at a friend or relative's house where someone is generally home all day. That way no packages are left on the porch step for anyone to take & you get your purchases as fast as possible.

Marion  13 Oct 2002
I agree with the comment by HudsonGray. If your work allows it, have the UPS deliver at work. That works for me because the mailroom staff is always there, and they can sign for it. Or to someone you know who is pretty well always home and willing to accept a parcel for you. Solves the cranky boyfriend problem too.

truthsayer  13 Oct 2002
having a personal post office box to have your mail sent solves all manner of significant other problems! ;) even tho my hubby is rather like your boyfriend, i don't understand why they think they have the right to say whether or not we buy more tarot decks. especially if we work or have our own money to pay for it. they do have their own foibles they like to waste money on. mine likes to play the lottery, poker and other forms of gambling. once you lose money gambling you can't get it back(generally) but if i were to sell my collection, i feel sure i could recoup at least 1/2 what i put into it. from what i see, depending on the deck, some tarot become more valuable. i make sure i point this out occasionally if my purchases are questioned.

purplelady  14 Oct 2002
That's funny , my b/f Loves to gamble and play lotto! ( a foolish expendiature of money if you ask me!) But he can't afford to now , so Maybe that's why he hit the roof and threw a freakin' fit when I told him I bought the tarot cards! Lol. And, I Am working now, so I figure I have the right to my small pleasure of buying a couple of tarot decks! But that's exactly it, he wants to say that I can't. I don't ever want to sell my decks though :) .
As for having it delivered at work, definitely not. I may ask for it to be left at the manager's office of my apartment complex. I could not remember if amazon prints the purchase (tarot cards) on the box though, and felt a little concerned about my privacy. And I got total free shipping too! It's a new shipping option at amazon. "Supersaver" or something like that. Said it may take up to 3 weeks but apparently it's shipped already and is on it's way!
I used to have a P.O. box and wish I had it now because that would solve the prob. They've gone up in price too though, Then I'd have to explain to Someone the sole reason I paid for a P.O.box! I could get one and not tell him (he he!) :TMAGE .

I wonder how Amazon would feel if those who can't change or cancel orders were to refuse delivery. That would inconvenience them more than having to get an order changed by a customer online. It doesn't say on the outside of the box what the order is, but there may be an invoice in an envelope on the outside. I don't really remember for sure, but I think the invoice was inside.

truthsayer  14 Oct 2002
actually, i have refused 2 items i decided i didn't want but amazon wouldn't let me cancel. i think they charged me for return postage but credited my credit card for the money for the item. since the amount was over the supersaver amount, i didn't pay for postage to me so it kinda worked out.

Keslynn  14 Oct 2002
Amazon doesn't put anything about your purchase on the outside of the box. The invoice is safely contained inside the box, and the only thing on the outside is your address label. Food for thought or perhaps for your next purchase.

I seem to remember amazon Does print the purchase on the package outside, but my memory is probubly faulty! I guess I'll find out soon. Anyhow, for various reasons I just really don't care to have the package left at my apt. managers office.
Even When I was home all day , it was still a hassle to track and wait for UPS. Once I was in the Bathroom and missed the UPS man! When you see a UPS truck rolling down the highway and a crazy lady running after it , you'll know that's me ;) . Well, I believe if they try to deliver 3 days in a row and no one is home it gets sent back but...................it would truly break my tarotholic heart to let that happen SO I called UPS. They said I Could go to their delivery site and pick up the package myself there. The place is not real close and not somewhere I'm going to try and drive to myself either SO guess who's agreed to drive me there? ;) !
I think when I get an extra $30 or $35 I may just go for that P.O. box ( they actually charge that much now for 6 months for the smallest P.O.box).

purplelady,
i've checked my recent amazon purchases and the purchases are definitely NOT on the mailing label on the box. they are listed on a slip inside the box. i wish this wasn't such a hassle for you. :) waiting for an amazon pkg should be a joyous event!

Keslynn  16 Oct 2002
I got mad at Amazon because it was going to take forever for them to ship the Nigel Jackson I wanted to order. It said "ships within 24 hours" and then it gave me an estimated ship date for 3 days later! Needless to say, I didn't place that order. You could try www.alibris.com if you're really tired of the hassle. I just placed my order with them for a comparable price to Amazon's.

:) Kes

PS - It would be funny to see someone chase a UPS truck... *lol* Great mental image, tarotlady. Thanks!

Oh but it IS a joyous event! I just find UPS too much of a hassle at this point. I am really thinking of that P.O. box. Just wondering if it is worth it or if I would order enough to make it worth it? But it is really sounding like the best solution.
And Even Though I live very close to 3 major bookstores! I Still prefer amazon lately because their selection and prices are So much better. I know there's been some controversy about the "I Am One" lately. But I feel it calling to me. And the Tarot De Paris is just plain cool.
Oh , here's another problum- how to make it look like there's the same number of decks and books on the bookshelf that there's always been! Lol. Like, one day you look at it and there seems to be more decks and books than there used to be!
I could have a bookshelf with a secret trap door that leads to- More tarot decks and books! :) :) ~

truthsayer  16 Oct 2002
what i do to hide my new decks is i have various hiding places all over the house. i'm in college so i hide some of my decks in a book bag--not the one i carry to school tho. i have a chest i use for decoration that's full of decks. i keep a deck in my car. i rotate the ones i want to look at on the book shelf. he doesn't seem to notice if my books and decks change b/c i'm constantly using what's on there anyhow. i have a storage chest that i keep papers and decks. i hide decks in the shelves of my computer decks. if i need to, i have kitchen cabinets that i could use. i'm only limited by my imagination!

purplelady  17 Oct 2002
You are funny Truthsayer! I mean.............sneaky! I really need another bookshelf- or Something! Well , my package arrived! It only took 5 days total, and that's totally free super saver shipping! It was supposed to take about 3 weeks. UPS decided on their own to leave it at my apt. manager's office. I guess it worked out pretty well. The only reason I told my b/f is that I figured he'd see me chasing UPS around! But it turns out I could have hidden it after all! Oh well , I don't seem to succeed at hiding these things lately anyhow! The package doesn't have my purchase written on the outside BUT I know at least once in the past , books and decks have arrived in a thing that wasn't quite a box. It was cardboard packaging. Well I haven't opened the package yet. I'm too burnt out from work. But I'll have this weekend to enjoy it.

personally, i prefer the term "creative". ;) LOL

glad you got your decks safely. i hope your b/f didn't start the mother of all arguments over it--at least, i hope he doesn't have a fit like my hubby(kinda takes away the joy, you know?)...let us know what you think of your new babies!!!!!!!!!

purplelady  21 Oct 2002
This is really Sad but I haven't even opened the package yet! I guess I'm waiting for that special time. I'm either at work, or exhausted from work, Or my family is right there breathing down my neck. And last night at 1 AM my husband's buddy's wife kicked him out and he is now our "houseguest" .
