I am rereading Elizabeth Cunningham's magical book, The Return of the Goddess and now that I am a tarot devotee i am wondering if the deck used in this book looks or is based on any actual deck or if she totaly invented the card images to support her story.
During a reading in chapter 20 several of the cards are described. for example, the Chariot.
"The young Black man, holding no reins, stood balanced in a rather sleek looking chariot, perhaps the ancient equivalent of a sports car. He wore a pale golden tunic fastened at the shoulders with silver crescent moons, waxing and waning. The wheels flamed, small suns, and the canopy of deep blue cloth embroidered with constellations ripppled with wind and speed against a clear daytime sky. Strangest of all were the steeds, a white unicorn with its head raised, horn pointing to the heavens, and a black winged horse lowering its head, nostrils flared. Both appeared to be galloping, but it was not at all clear that they would pull in the same direction. there was a sense of dynamic tension in the card that hinted at the possibility of everything flying apart and crashing to ruin. the charioteer seemed exhilarated by the danger, willing to take a chance, to try his luck, trusting in grace-his own."
In chapter 20 of the book, the deck, used by a young black man named Marvin, is said to be based on a very old deck of Spanish Moorish origin and never published, only given out to a few select friends.
Anyone ever see a card resembling this one?
And the book is so worth reading. It is oop but i first got it out of my library system. then i bought my own copy.
