Do you jealously guard your decks?

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 26 Oct 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Just curious. :)

Are you OK with others touching/handling/flipping through or even reading with your decks, or do you turn psychotic, Hannibal Lecter style, at the mere thought? I, for one, hate other people touching my stuff, and my decks even more so, and I would NEVER let anyone whom with I do not have a very close relationship handle my cards. My precious, my precious... *shades of Gollum from LOTR*

}) }) })

Fuzzmello  26 Oct 2002
The decks I let them use, they can fondle all they want. I do cringe when someone absentmindedly riffles the deck, tho. I really bemoan bend or twisted cards. That's why they have a couple of decks and I have my own.

Maan  26 Oct 2002
It depends on the people..its like touching..some people are allowed to put an arm around me, kiss me huge me etc...some people don't because where not close or whe don't like eachother much!
For my decks are the samen rules.

wavebreaker  26 Oct 2002
With my decks it's the same as with my books: I'm a book freak and I hate it when somebody ruins one of my books... So I only give them to people whom I know will be careful with them. And I will only let people I trust with my books handle my decks... ;)

Melvis  26 Oct 2002
I had a friend come over in August, and I was showing her some of my decks. I didn't really have a problem until she tried to put the decks back in their boxes.

"Don't reverse the cards."

"Can you put the little white book behind the cards?"

"Um...turn the cards so the backs are to the, uh, back."

"Oh! Also, those two extra cards have to go behind the little white book."

"Wait, can you face those two the same way as the others?"

"OH MY GOD!!!"

That last exclamation was from my friend, who hereafter refuses to ever put another of my decks away. She'll look at them, but hands them all to me when she's done! :D

Peace,

Melvis

Oh Melvis,
That is soooo me too!!! ROFL

Of course the two extra cards have to go behind the LWB - which of course has to go in the back. And the cards have to face all the same way with the backs toward the back!!!

**ROFLMAO**

Phoenix  26 Oct 2002
I used to be like that, but now..I personally don't care. As long as they don't bend the cards out of shape, I am fine.

ihcoyc  26 Oct 2002
I really don't mind people handling my decks, provided that they don't bend them or beat on them.

But I also have the little ritual involving putting the decks that still have their original boxes back in properly. It's most important on decks that have playing card/Lo Scarabeo type boxes. I typically bind these boxes up with library tape so they'll last longer, until they fall apart, in which case I put them in another box.

The whole deck should go in backwards in the box, facing the tab. Then comes the LWB; then the extra cards, so that the face of the bottom card is cushioned by the LWB, and the tab comes down on the extra cards rather than the deck itself.

For decks with two part boxes, the extra cards go on bottom, followed by the LWB, and then the deck face-down.

VGimlet  27 Oct 2002
I didn't think so.
But when my sister was over, and started looking through my reading decks, i got a bit uncomfortable, although I didn't tell her.
I was surprised, because I have no problem with Ken looking through them if he wants.

And, thinking about it, I got kind of uncomfortable when my MIL came over this summer and glanced through the deck I was airing out on the porch (it definately came from a smoker's home). So...I guess I am a bit.

Phoenix  27 Oct 2002
I usually leave the LWB's and extra cards sitting in my closet...

Melvis  27 Oct 2002
Faunabay: It's nice to know I'm not the only one here in the Tarot Box Looney Bin! :D ;) })

(Must go straighten my decks...now where is that ruler that I use to align all the decks...?)

Peace,

Melvis

Kiama  27 Oct 2002
I let my friends look at all of my decks and use them if they want, unles they intend on spilling alcoholic drinks on the cards!

The more expensive and rare decks however, are handled with care, and taken wellaway from any smoke or drink...

Kiama

faunabay  27 Oct 2002
Now I don't mind if someone looks through the decks.
And Melvis, I usually don't say anything at the time - just go back through and straighten things up after they've left. ROFL
Although I did let my boss (just recently quit and not a nice person) look through my faeries oracle deck. She's an artist and I thought she'd like it. Which she did, but........
I had to cleanse the deck after quiting!! The faeries were telling me they didn't like the energy she had and wanted it gone!! :D
But that's the only time I've had to do that after someone has looked through any of my cards!

RedWood  27 Oct 2002
I let people look at my decks..Luckily i dont know many people who want to hehe...When I let my friend do it..I have heart palpatations....She is not gentle ..treats them like a reg deck..If I were better off financially I probably would not care as much.. But if she ruins a deck..I can't afford to go buy another one!..I prefer to show them to her...

Emily  27 Oct 2002
I'm not overkeen to let others handle my favourite decks, I'm the only one who has ever touched my Spiral and Robin Wood - The other decks, if I show them to anyone I tend to hover, I have no idea why lol, until they hand the deck back, then I have to shuffle at least once before I put them away.
I put the extra cards one at the front and one at the back of the deck to protect the cards when I put them in the box, the LWB goes to the back unless I feel I have to squash the cards in then I take it out. The Diamond tarot box isn't really big enough to take the deck and LWB so I took the LWB out. :)

truthsayer  27 Oct 2002
this topic has gotten me to thinking about what a paradox i am. i am so unorganized! i have things all over the house. however, this is just camouflage for the tarot psycho i truly am. i do my upmost to keep all the original boxes. i don't riffle the cards. i make and buy special boxes and bags. i don't keep them all in one place in case one hiding place is discovered, there are still other hiding places. i'll let someone touch a deck long enough to shuffle them while my eyes follow every movement made until they're back in my sweat stained hands. let someone else touch them just to look thru them????? ARE YOU CRAZY??????????? }) :D ;) they're mine they're MINE, I TELL YOU! BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHahahahahha!!!

i've thought about displaying my best one in my my collection cabinet but that would give too many an opportunity to touch my decks w/o me there to monitor their behavior.

i guess i'm a bit like gollem, too. :( it's the craziest thing but i find myself worrying what'll happen to my decks when i'm gone. will the local fundies hold a bon fire? will they get sold for a quarter at a yard sale? will they be given to the grandchildren, neices, and nephews to play with? <<<<<<<>>>>> i've even thought about doing a video tape, give their estimated values, and give names and email addresses of everyone who gets a deck to make sure i have some control on the fate of my preciouses!!!

don't everyone volunteer at the same time to be on that list! no hitting or shoving! no breaking in line! ;)

RedWood  27 Oct 2002
LoL truthsayer...but think of the souls who will be so happy to find a deck at a garage sale..LIKE ME!! My guy bought me fantastical at a garage sale for a $1....I will cherish the deck hehe..So just cuz it is sold at a garage sale doesnt mean it is goign to the wrong hands!!

LOL, I've been thinking about that too... My family doesn't know about my tarot decks at all and they might just throw them away thinking they are just cards... So I thought about putting a list with prices in the box with the decks, to give them some idea of their worth. I've already compiled the list and with just 20 decks it already adds up to about €500 :|. I'm sure an amount like that will prevent them from just throwing the decks away... :D

Umbrae  27 Oct 2002
Since the LWB and the box are the first things into the fire, that’s not an issue with me.

If folks want to handle my decks, that is fine with me. My old deck (now gone) was quite worn, had stains from gosh knows what, cards had gotten dog-eared and bent…and it still worked quite well…in fact it worked real well.

Decks like to be handled by others. Mother said, “Share”.

Rhiannon  27 Oct 2002
I let people look through my decks all the time. I usually am right there with them though. I like to show them off! LOL

I've only had a problem when someone wanted to "borrow" my deck to learn with. Which meant I wouldn't have it back right away! I was so worried and possessive I went out at lunch and bought that person their own deck/book set! LOL Now THAT'S crazy!

R :)

Melvis  27 Oct 2002
Your mention of friends 'borrowing' your decks reminds of what happened at the end of my friends visit that I mentioned above.

As she was leaving, literally ready to walk out the door with her bag on her shoulder, we were still talking about me decks. I mentioned the 'green' Thoth deck I had, and that I really had no use for it now that I have another Thoth.

Suddenly, the idea came to me...I gave it to her! She'd purchased the Witches Tarot a couple months before, but expressed some interest in having another deck for comparison. So now it's hers!

I received an email from her a couple weeks ago, which said that her youngest son (who is 5, I believe) likes laying out the cards and telling a story with them. If he gets a card he doesn't like, however, he replaces it with a happier card of his choice. Sounds like a young man taking charge of his future! :D

Peace,

Melvis

Yes, same for me, only some people are allowed to touch them, unless they are actually having a reading.
My decks all 'sleep' together in my special "open sesame" desk in the wall, so others can only really see them if I offer.

I've done this twice... One girl wanted to learn Tarot, but th edekc she had wa cheap and nasty, and because she had a muscular disorder, her hands were too small to hold nearly all decks on the market... So my Hanson Roberts went to her.

Anothe friend had the 1JJ Swiss, and couldn't read with it very well. She hated it in fact, but she's a sudent and trying to save money so that she and her boyfriend can buy a flat instead of renting one... And she liked my Connolly lots, so I made it my gift to her, and she's been having great readinsg since.

It's painful to part with decks from my collection, esp. the two above cuz I really liked them, however, I have 95 decks, and tehre are some out there with none, or really rubbish ones... So I figure that they need them more than me...

Kiama

catlin  28 Oct 2002
I have about 5-6 decks I use for public readings and let ppl handle them (no riffling allowed!!) but I don't let ppl touch my collector's decks eg no strange fingers on my Greenwood, W. Blake, Hanslian Engeltarot etc.

They are "my preciousssss" (catlin developing paddle feed and gollumlike features).

Dog-eared? !! Bent? !! Nooooo !!!!!!!!!

I couldn't bear it if my cards got dog-eared or bent. I sometimes see card on ebay advertised as 'no tears or creases' and I think 'who'd want cards that were torn or creased anyway?'

I don't mind books that get a bit tatty. I suppose the difference is that with the cards it is the feel and the texture as well as the look that I go for. Maybe if I think of it more in terms of the information in the pictures I'll be less wound up about it ...

Or maybe not :D

But in my head i might add before you really think i'm crazy LOL

Bings  29 Oct 2002
I have a friend who now reads with my Sacred Circle deck more than I do. We usually do readings together and when I'm done with my 7 card spread if the querent has more questions or something is unclear my friend will pick up my deck (she always asks first) and do a three card spread. She just flips over the next three cards. We kind of come as a pair now when asked to do readings.

I once did a reading for a person who wanted to touch every card I laid down. Even before I was able to look at what card was laid down she was picking it up and telling me what she thought it meant. Have you ever wanted to reach across and slap the hand of the person you are reading for???? I came so close that day!!!! She then asked if she could borrow the book. (I was using the LAT deck and the book is so wonderful.) Just watching her flipping through the book, after I told her she couldn't borrow it, was giving me anxiety!!!

I will normally let others look at my decks. I do tell them to please be very careful. I also feel different degrees of anxiety depending on who is touching my cards. They always get a good cleansing after being handled before I put them away.

Dianne

divinerguy  29 Oct 2002
Not only can they touch, I encourage it. I have my querent select each and every card.

It allows their energies to become part of the reading. It makes them an integral part of the reading, and it adds a bit of drama.

Unless they've been eating eating Hershey bars, I have little concern over the consequences.

Demonesse  29 Oct 2002

I don't care about the transferral of energies much, if at all; I just hate people touching my stuff! :D

TarotGollum group? Imagine what would happen if we got together and all of us became interested in another's decks, decks that belonged to another Tarotgollum...o_0

catlin  29 Oct 2002
Hi Demonesse, I like that!

Imagine us all in a bunch clawing and snatching decks away, hissing loud. Do we also have to smell of fish to achive major Gollumization?

Demonesse  29 Oct 2002
Noooooooo, my prettiesssss! We deal in tarot, he deals in rings...so we only have to smell of freshly-opened tarot decks and new tarot books to achieve that rare state of Tarotgollumization!

This pretty much sums it up for me too. If I do not completly trust the person with how they will handle my decks or books, then I stay with them and watch carefully in case I have to snatch my treasure away from them to protect it. Luckily not many people are interested in my Tarot stuff so there are not many poeple trying to touch it. But people I like and know are more than welcome to shuffle and read with my decks. And anyone I am reading for has to at least cut them.

I have not yet read this whole thread but had to comment on this. It's mainly me handling my decks and I often have a problum getting them back into the box! The deck fits so tightly I'm afraid I may bend , scrape, or otherwise damage a card. You've got the deck, a little white book, and sometimes another paper showing a possible spread. They all go into the box but usually one card on the very end sticks up due to the box bottom. So, how to get this card smoothly into the box without forcing it with my fingernail and denting the edge??? Does anyone else have this problum??? ARG!

O.K. this answer helps, guess I should've read farther! And I Love library tape! But I don't work in a library so I don't know where to get it, if it's the same thing I'm thinking of-
But I Have used the clear box-packaging tape ,as a substitute, to cover favorite paperback books and protect the cover. Have never thought of using it on deck-boxes before, but you may have just given me a new idea!
Oh I have a suggestion for those Llewellyn deck boxes that open from the side , and are cute but aren't tight enough. I just took some clear scotch tape and taped each corner to make it tighter. Then it held the deck in even when turned upside down.

I let people look at my cards, but only while I keep a sharp eye at them. I don't want my decks to be damaged in any way. And when I show them to others I remember who is clumsy (I know it's evil, but I don't want my decks to be damaged, as I said before) and who is not, and then keep an extra eye on those who are.

Purplelady: There is a method to my madness...the reason the extra cards go in the back is because they never come out of the box. Thus, I never have to worry about jamming the cards against the tab on the bottom since those two cards act like a 'false back'. As for the top tab, I just try to close the lid extra carefully.

Ahem. Thus we can proceed at this time to more serious, formal, organizational business...

I hereby inaugurate the Society for the Mutual Exclusion of my Arcana from all Greedy On-Lookers -- also known as SMEAGOL! I invite all Tarot-Gollums to join with me...but keep your nassty pawss off my deckss during the meeting, please!

S.M.E.A.G.O.L. it is! I wonder if we can mention this to the folks who have the LOTR rights, since we're all official and have our own mascot and a respectable membership base now - AND induce them to make a photographic LOTR deck for us..and..and...poof! *wakes up*

Diana!! Definitely no biscuit!! :D
Although, if they could make it with Aragorn... uhm, did I say that out loud? I didn't did I???

Melvis  01 Nov 2002
Hey, I'd forego a biscuit or seventy if I could see Legolas OR Aragorn in a loincloth of some kind.

Uh oh...could I get kicked out of SMEAGOL for suggesting something like this?

Gollum thinksses not.

Peace,

lawguy51  02 Nov 2002
Last night I was sitting on my bed, working with my new Victoria Regina deck when my wife asked if she could see them. I started to hand them to her and then instinctively pulled them back. She was quite insulted. I made the excuse that I was about to do a reading for myself so I didn't want her energy in the deck. That only made things worse! I finally said, go ahead, it's not a problem. I don't care. But she wouldn't touch them. I laid them on her chest but she said no, maybe another day. I think I have a problem!

RedWood  02 Nov 2002
Lawguy..Ohhh you must get your wife her own deck? get her interested...hehe..the she will understand...suck her into your taroism!

Melvis  02 Nov 2002
Lawguy: As long as you didn't hissss at her when you pulled your cards back, and started talking about yourself in the third person, I think you'll be OK...in regards to being a Tarot-Gollum, that is. Now, your status with your wife? I think you're in some deep doo-doo there, buddy. I'm single, though, so I'm no good at smoothing over those marital bumps in the road.

I just had a brainstorm, though! The next time your wife goes out on an errand and you're still at home, lay out a trail of your Victoria Regina cards leading from the front door to your bedroom, where you are, of course, ahem! Victoria herself would never approve, but what a great way to introduce a loved one to that special deck! LOL!

You know, I think all this talk about Legolas and Aragorn in the altogether has made me a bit depraved...just look at what I suggested Lawguy should do! Heavens! I'm sure I'll be censored any second now.

Now that's why I'd put a loincloth on those LOTR boys...I couldn't be responsible for my actions otherwise! :D

Peace,

Melvis

Demonesse  02 Nov 2002
Lol! That's, er, creative, but maybe the wife would just prefer a dozen roses. Then again, if lawguy looked like Legolas or Aragorn minus the loincloth....what possibilities!!!! :P

Well, I have to say that if I had legolas or aragorn waiting for me in a bed (loincloth or no loincloth... well, perhaps no loincloth sounds better) I wouldn't even take one look at the cards....

PS- of course I would never refuse mother-nature gifts... it would make her offended, and we wouldn't want that, wouldn't we????

no WAY, jose! i NEVER allow querents/others to "touch," OR "shuffle" my decks (and, "if" they happen to? not ONLY must i perform a tarot consecration rite, BUT, i get to "wipe each and every single card off w/my white silk, used ESPECIALLY for this, it's Sole Purpose!

heck, no one has ever even SEEN my b.o.t.a. keys/deck!!!

Now, some of us are very guilty of having posted off-topic in this thread. But Demonesse doesn't seem to mind too much :)

But of course not! :)

And I am solemnly determined never to LEND any decks out (what do you think I am? A library? Bah, humbug!), especially when I've had nasty experiences like this friend of mine who was actually BENDING the tips of my cards as she flipped them over (sacrilege!), and books I've lent to other people come back with stains, bent pages, etc, etc....

zander770  03 Nov 2002
. . . and books I've lent to other people come back with stains, bent pages, etc, etc....

no ****e . . . someone--several yrs ago--"borrowed" my "thoth" deck & book. can you IMAGINE the Instant Karma that comes w/that? i hope the guy's still walking and breathing!

Back off topic...LOTR deck...Arwen as the High Priestess!

RedWood  03 Nov 2002
I havent seen the movie or read the books :( the library has them on hold forever...

Demonesse  03 Nov 2002
Noooooo! Galadriel is the High Priestess - c'mon, admit it people, let's take a vote - Galadriel or Arwen for High Priestess?

* On a side note, this is THE most persistently off topic thread I've seen, but probably also the most fun! LOL!

anjocoxo  04 Nov 2002
definately galadriel as high priestess.... arwen has to be in the lovers card, along with aragorn *anjocoxo grins with jealousy*... what about gandalf? the magician?

what about if we do our own LOTR deck?

I am still reading the book so I may change my mind later ... I'm going on what I saw in the movie ... I would go for Galadriel as HP and Arwen as strength. She is a quite determined young woman and from the commercials of the second movie she stands her grown too!. She and Aragon would be great for the lovers card ... perhaps her dad as a third person (choice, should she stay or go with impending destruction coming along)

Aragon in a loincloth? or without one? ~giggles~ May I suggest this as the back of the cards so we can see it on all 78? *LOL* ... You know the Cosmic Tribe uses nudity as one of its design elements ... perhaps ... oh never mind!

Hmm, for me it's a very personal thing.
So far no one touch my deck without asking...
except my cat...that's ok.

I will only let them touch if they ask.

Eyes of Night  08 Nov 2002
I haven't had my deck for very long. I only told one of my friends I got a tarot deck, but she probably forgot. As for my family, I think they're curious, but don't know how to approch me.

But, anyways, I don't think I would let them touch my cards. I'm very over protective about my stuff. I don't know what I would do if they spilled jus on them or smudged it. I always want everything neat and clean. I know I could always buy another one, but it's the fact that my first deck would be ruined, and it wouldn't be my fault (I'm very clumsy ;)).

I think our sssssssymbol Gollum ssssshould be on the back of the cardsssss...to remind us of our weaknessss...
Only differensssss with me issss: I collect preciousssss things that can be replaced... I lost two cardsssssss of my animal druid oracle... had no peace until I ordered another deck...
glad I myself was responsible for this, I would lose friends over my precioussss...})
If friends of mine would show interest in my deckssss, i would first explain to them what a Gollum I am... if they still dare touch my cardsss I'm sure they will be very careful with them.

violinlily  09 Nov 2002
hey all of you.....Gollumers....lol!

In my photography class...... a REALLLLLLLLLY annoying, for lack of a better word... (coughing out ***hole) askes repeatedly (every day) to "see" my deck...... GRRRRRRR..... He's really mean to my friend Bob, who got me started in all of this, and asked to see his cards....... I don't wanna know what he'd do wid em.

On the aragorn/legolas poll: legolas definity....
(cough: cutie) those plastic ears are the best!

I think that Arwen should be on the Lovers... and Galadriel as the high priestess.... Could you change the magician card to Sorcerer for gandalf??

I also just noticed I am listening to my LOTR soundtrack from the 1st movie, and I turned it on before I got on the net..... and read most of this thread.... weirdnessssssssssss.....

sigh..... orlando bloom/legolas...... sigh.....

I'm realatively new to tarot, but I do NOT like letting other people
touch my cards. If they ask me if they they can see, I politely tell them that I'd rather if they didn't.

I guess the sky won't fall or anything, but it just irks me no end
when people try to touch my cards.

Demonesse  18 Mar 2003
Bump! Let's see if anyone else can add to thissss.

coldsuns  18 Mar 2003
Actually our own Tarot Cards shouldnt let other touch it. It is a very own thing. Unless you are helping the person to make a predict, other than that shouldnt let the person touch it. There is an energy when you're using the Tarot Cards.
Spirits are around you helping you to predict. We must be very focus to allow them to do so. After a long time using, the spirits will be often surrounding the Tarot Deck.

Logiatrix  18 Mar 2003
demonesse,
i used to be very touchy about my cards. i'm still somewhat fastidious about the right tarot bag and the perfect silk spread cloth, but that's just fun to me.
when i was new to tarot i would get all weird about nicked edges, bent corners, superficial scratches, or when people handled my cards. i feared that someone else's "bad vibes" would harm my cards (or my other spiritual tools).
i've grown aware of a certain truth over time: my cards are temporal and replaceable, but it's my knowledge, ability and intuition that are REALLY MINE, uncorruptible and secure within me. my cards are just a tool.
i do believe that my cards have my spirit in them, just because i am always handling them. my spirit is good and strong, and hopefully, others will pick up on MY "positive vibes" when they touch my cards.
so now, i am actually eager to hand my cards over to anyone who wants to admire them, or those who are simply curious. i am also that way about my prayer beads, my spiritual books, or anything else i have that i can share.
:)

Khatruman  18 Mar 2003
Hmmm, mix of Lecter and Gollum....

Fava beans, my precioussssss??????? Ahhhh, so good with fishesssssss, don't you think? But don't cooksss them, you nassssty hobbitssessssss!!!

Well, yeah... I cringe if someone handles my preciousss, errr, my cards and starts bending them like they are gonna play some three card monte with them!!!

I am one who would rather do the shuffling..then let the querent cut, or fan them out and let the querent choose, so his or her energy is there, but my cards also remain as I want them. Yeah, there's a bit of anal-ness about it..but, hey, I am a teacher... being anal is a job requirement!!!

Peace!

Astraea  18 Mar 2003
I, too, prefer to do all the shuffling -- I let the querent cut the deck. The universe knows what the needs and intentions are at the time of a reading, without a lot of handling of the cards by people who might not respect their physical properties as much as I do! :)

Melvis  18 Mar 2003

My deck is my deck. No one touches it without my permission. Like other treasures I am picky about who I allow to handle it. Those who do know how to treat it with respect. I would not let anyone I didn't trust touch it. Were someone ask to borrow it...NO WAY. Let someone else read from it? It depends on who it is and what the little voice says at the time. So far I have only let one other person read with my deck and that has been many years ago.

Demonesse  19 Mar 2003
OH MY GOD.

Melvissssss, that is freaksyyyyyyy! (as opposed to "tricksy hobbitsesss!") Perhaps we can start an X-treme version of the Tarotgollum club. Rule Number 1: We do not eat each other.

Khatruman  19 Mar 2003
YESSSSSSSSSS, Melvis knowsss.

God, that is just TOOOO funny!!!

Demonesse, I will be in the tarotgollum club, no eatsing of those nasssssty hobbitssessss.

LOL

Icestorm  22 Mar 2003
I tend to let the person im reading for cut and turn the deck, but only I shuffle it.

WolfSpirit  23 Mar 2003

hannibal smeagol what a preciousssssss

Mimers  23 Mar 2003
This is too funny!

I generally dont mind with one exception, my Mother. It has nothing to do with vibes. When I do a reading for her, she shuffles my cards like she is getting ready to play bridge!!! I make sure I only use my RW when reading for her.

My daughter has played with all my decks and treats them with respect. Frankly with her beautiful soul, I like the idea of her vibes being in the deck.

Mimers

Melissa`  24 Mar 2003
I don't really have a problem with people touching or shuffling my decks or looking through them or whatever... I do get a bit agitated when they poker style shuffle my deck.. its like "no no no no no..."reallly fast :D .. Now I really don't like people I don't know very well to nosy around any other things I have on my magical bookshelves so to speak.. that really makes me nervous..

my deck.. hands off!!!! *brandishing wooden spoon!*

aqua9air  27 Mar 2003
That depends on situation and person.
:)
i would let my best friend touch all my decks, since she also loves tarot and knows how to handle them carefully lol ;)
but for others, because i prefer them to suffle and cut the cards, i do keep a eye on them, and i do feel a painful urge to jump up and grap the deck from their hands if they are not suffling properly. :P

I'm a pretty even -tempered kind a gal.

If someone touches my cards and I don't want them to, I just ask them not to. If they want to look at them, I show them the cards. If they insist, I just walk away !!!!!!

Alex  31 Mar 2003
about people manipulating my cards but I prefer that they don't damage or loose them. Most people are affraid of the cards anyway, I've seldom had anyone showing interest in touching them even when I suggested, they don't bite or anything, you can touch...

It is kinda funny in this culture here that people seldom touch. Each other, as a matter of fact, very seldom_ unless it's sexual in nature (so in order to get good hugs one needs a to find a sex partner as well). People don't like being touched and, may be as an extension of themselves, they also don't like when their belongings are touched.

It's fine, doesn't take a piece or anything. Go for it.

Alex.

I dont like any1 drawing or touching any of my books and i dont lend them out i only ever did that once and i never got the books back.

I only allow people to touch 1 cheap deck when i get do a reading for them.

I dont allow anyone to touch my crystals.

I dont allow anyone to read my books.

So i would have to i am a freak when it comes to touching my stuff.

LOL

Woof  31 Mar 2003
I have to say it doesn't bother me.
When I read for others, I like them to shuffle and cut the cards. I don't feel comfortable if they don't. I think that's why I've never participated in the exchange forum. I usually use my Universal Waite so If it gets ruined I can always get a new one.
Books I'm still a little too attached too. If it's a book I really want to keep I'll only lend to people I trust. If it's something I enjoyed but don't see myself reading again I'll usually know someone who'd enjoy it so I send it off.
On a gut level, every time I lend anything (including money) it's always with the mental note that I may not get it back or I may get it back damaged. That's life! There are more important things to worry about than "stuff".
Woof

azuremariposa  31 Mar 2003
when i first started reading i didn't mind it so much...i would let the other person handle the deck, shuffle the cards, etc...but after watching numerous people damage my cards by doing so, i called "enough is enough!" lol...
generally speaking, i don't let people read w/my cards (though my mother has an annoying habit of doing it anyway)...i don't let people shuffle anymore (i don't find it necessary, plus i do alot of readings online where touching just CAN'T happen)...
i've become slightly less "psycho" about people touching them though, b/c my son has a tendency to get into them and he is very attentive when i use them...he's bent more than a few, so i've learned to "chill" when it happens...
i let my husband look through them if he wants, but he's probably the only person that gets to do so...
and i can always tell when the cards have become "dirty", and clean them right away, so it's no biggie...
if someone just grabbed them, it would bug me, but if they ask, i guess it's ok...:)
