Hi I am totally new to tarot.
I nearly didn't get a tarot deck at all cause my mum said that it was a waste of time but I did a reading for her and she was really shocked at how accurate I was and thinks tarot is cool.
Me and my friends Amanda, Matt, Laura and Rachel are all into tarot. Laura has the celtic tarot deck and Matt has ordered the vampire one.
I love this website it is soooo cool
At the moment I only have one deck of taro cards but I realy want the merlin and egyptian tarot decks and I'll get them when I have the money.

Hello and welcome to Aeclectic! Which deck is it that you have? And I think it's so great that you have friends to explore the tarot with you. You'll find plenty more here!
:) Kes
PS - Unless you are a member of this site, I believe you have to wait until a certain number of posts before you get to choose a cool little picture. But I'm not sure. Perhaps one of the admins can help you with that.

Hi, QueenofRagnarok, welcome to Aeclectic!
There are certain avatars available to people based on their number of posts. There are currently four available to people with any number of posts. To get one of them:
Look at the top of the screen and click on "User CP"
Scroll down and click on "Change Avatar" at the bottom
Choose one of the ones available to you, and click on "Submit Modifications" at the bottom.
That's it! :)

welcome! there's lots of nice ppl here that i think you'll enjoy talking tarot about. one things we tend to do is try to guide beginners (sometimes whether it's asked for or not) ;)
it's been our experience at the forum that the rider waite smith is generally easier for beginners to start with before moving into more complex decks. i think the ancient egyptian by clive barrett would best of the 2 you mention b/c it relates a lot to the rws symbolism. that should allow you to look at other tarot books and sites and understand what's going on. i have the merlin deck and it is a more difficult deck with a differing philosophy than most tarot decks. a lot of author's own eclectic philosophy is incorporated and you need to read to understand that to read his decks. you could read AE with what you learn here or other general tarot sites.
you'll be fine as long as you remember that tarot is a journey not a destination. i've studied tarot most of my life and never tire of it. good luck and have fun!

Welcome, QueenofRagnarok.
When truthsayer says that 'it's been our experience at the forum that the rider waite smith is generally easier for beginners', it should be pointed out that this is not consensus opinion, even if it is, at this stage, the view of the majority. For many of us, a deck with pips which remain unillustrated with scenes and which maintain the earlier numbering of Justice as VIII and Strength as XI is actually easier for beginners and experienced users alike.
Pips without the scenic diversions allows for the Major Arcana cards to really stand out, and a simple mnemonic for the four elements and numbers one through to ten allows for an ease of understanding to progressively develop.
By all means get the Merlin and the Egyptian Tarot decks when you have the opportunity - they will only add to the studies which remain, for most of us, life-long!

Hi QueenofRagnarok!
I'm so glad you've joined us here. You can see already that this is a great website and the people who post here are generous with advice and their knowledge of Tarot.
One thing, have you seen the Newcomers topic forum? It's where you can go and tell us a little more about yourself. Great place to meet others new to tarot or new to Aeclectic.
It doesn't really matter which deck you start with, as long as you can relate to what they cards are telling you. The best reason to change decks is to improve that feeling of understanding. After a while, if you practice, lots of decks will have that feel.
Have fun! Remember that the Tarot is best used for gathering information. Tarot works best when we live our own lives and make our own decisions.
