Betrayal

I'm new to tarot but as I walked by the Arthurian Legend deck, they almost jumped into my hands. They are exquisit in appreance and know me so well that it's almost frightening. I read on this forum about people with multiple decks. The thought of getting another deck feels like an absolute betrayal to my deck. Is this unusual to feel this connection with my deck?

Kyrielle  15 Nov 2002
It's not unusual to feel really connected to your first deck, or your primary deck if you have several. But if the Legend jumped into your hands and you resonated with the style, you may want to consider getting a copy. I have several reading decks and I use whichever one I feel like using. So you may be kind of the same way. I don't know what your first deck is, but consider the mood and style of that one versus the Legend. Or you may use one deck for one type of reading, like daily cards, and another for more involved spreads, or meditation, or whatever else. It's not that bad to have a couple decks to use...I've never had any of mine get jealous of one another yet.

If you want, you could ask your first deck its feelings about acquiring a second deck. Pull a couple cards and see what happens.

you don't need several decks. there is absolutely nothing wrong with having just one deck. i read with one for years! if you feel that connected to one deck than trust your intuition.

robin wood to the thoth,, hey i live up on the top you nut you

little connoly to the robinwood ahh but i am so cute.

It's not unusual at all! Congratulations on finding a deck that you connect with so well! There are tons and tons of tarotholics (multiple decks owners/collectors) on the boards, but there are equal numbers of people who have only one or two decks. Do what makes you feel most comfortable. And if you can resist buying many tarot decks, then more power to you! You'll save so much money. ;)

Is someone betraying their spouse by having other friends?

While decks may have their personalities and working with a deck may be viewed as a relationship by some, I feel it needs to be looked at as a friendship not a marriage. Purchasing a deck and using it, is not like taking marriage vows, but just sayin, "hey, you seem interesting, let's hang out together." No need to create a new psycholgy of tarot adultery.

And don't sleep with your favorite deck, or you might get some nasty paper cuts! Barrah-ching!

Hope that sums it up for ya,

I don't know, guenavier. I never had any feelings like that about my decks. Does this deck remind you of a person you know??

I feel th same Guinevere... I do have loads of othre decks, but only ever use ONE, and I am even wary of getting a new copy of that deck, cuz I feel bad about it! My Robin Wood has seen some great times and places with me... And it feels weird not reading with that deck...

I guess my deck's become like a friend to me...

I can't seem to resist getting more decks because the art work is so amazing. I do use one deck more than any other, but enjoy the look of different cards at times.

There's no right or wrong way to be on this topic. If you felt such a strong affinity and bonding with a particular deck, then you're lucky and will have a joyous time reading with it.

If, years down the road, that relationship changes, and it could, that's a natural process and you won't be a bad person for it.

Don't think of it as a betrayal.Don't even use the word 'betrayal'.(Use this word when it comes to people.)

If everyone feels they only need that 1 deck, then the world would be such a boring place.

Look at all the decks that have come out since the beginning.Aren't they beautiful? It gives people the opportunity to create and to own those decks that touches them.

I'm glad to have the chance and the freedom to own more than 1 deck! :D

I've currently only used one deck, and it's been giving the feeling that it need a long, prehaps permanant, holiday. It feels worn out and has given me the feeling that it's time to get na new deck. (It's 20+ years old!) As long as you feel alright with it it's alright to have more than one deck, but if something just feels absolutely wrong about it then don't.

I sort of feel this way about my World Spirit that will be going to a new home shortly. I used the deck for study and it served me well, I almost feel like I should keep it because of that, but I know I won't use it for readings and I know the new owner will truly appreciate it.

This reminds me of those new Ikea commercials: A lamp is put out on the side of the road and a new lamp is used to replace it in the house. It begins to rain and the old lamp on the curb looks sad and forlorn. A man walks up and says "Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That is because you are crazy... it has no feelings, and the new one is much better."

If you felt a pull towards this deck then perhaps you should give it a try. I have quite a few decks but always seem to return to the Spiral, my favourite - the one that I seem to be able to read and connect with better.
Your old deck will still be waiting for you when you go back to it, its not a betrayal you are just trying out other decks. :)

One thing I don't get... Is the Legend yhe deck you already have (the first deck), or the one you feel you should buy (the second)? Anyway, I agree with all the others that posted before! ;)
If you have a strong relationship, just keep cultivating it and don't worry about other decks or else - it is a gift and I bet you can give great readings to yourself and others with your deck.
Maybe, in the future, after working with it a lot, you might feel it is time to get another - also because the cardstock tends to get damaged by usage. But that is just a possibility, and it doesn't it must be so for you as well. :)

I really have a very strong connection with my Witch's Tarot.
I used it all the time and hardly ever used my other decks.

One day I went to do a reading and couldn't find the Witch's Tarot. I searched the house and couldn't find it. As a matter of
fact, is still among the missing.

I believe it was the "Powers that Be" telling me that it was time
start using my other decks and to discover what they had to say.
Thanks to this BB I have purchased my 5th deck.

Just do what is in your heart to do.

If you feel drawn to another deck in particular, the go for it !!!!!
If not, stick with one you love. It's not like you're under any
time constraints to get another deck. Wait until you feel comfortable and then go get another deck !!!!

to think about what kinds of personal traits you "project" on your deck.

I'm VERY pocessive of the people I *perceive* to be mine, so I also have this strange feeling that my Mythic deck is jealous of me when I "mess around" with other decks.

I try to be as *faithful* as possible to my first deck. I don't consult others unless it's for OTHER people and I consult mine whenever the question is important, regardless of whether it's my question or somebody else's. So treat your deck as you would like to be treated by a *significant* one and it'll be fine.

Oh well.

Alex.
