Has anyone ever asked one question, then seemed to get the answer to another? It happens to me quite often. Is it because I am not focused enough or something? If that's the case, which I think it may be, does anyone have any suggestions on how to stay focused?

Sometimes it's a stronger question the person wants answered but didn't ask. Sometimes, too, it could be what they NEED to hear versus what they asked about.
It happens. Not all the time to me, but it does happen. Maybe you can get a handle on it by keeping it more open, not asking a specific question, just saying 'tell me what I need to know about', and work from there.

Yeah, when I did a reading for my cousin, it usually answered another question he didn't ask. It picked up something else. Sometimes I find that with my Marseille deck--that it picks up on hidden, deeper subconscious feelings.

I agree with both of you, but that's what the Tarot is all about, isn't it? .... To pick up the influences that the querant isn't aware of - to help them make more informed decisions

I don't see this as picking up the wrong signals.
I think that your understanding that it is an answer to another question is right on the mark.
The explinations others gave are quite valid from my experience. I have a very hard time with 'focus' I can't meditate. When I do a reading, sometimes my mind will wander from the issue/question. Most times I get a reading that pertains to the 'Q' and on occasion I have to go back and think of where my mind went when I was preparing the cards. With that I find the question that the cards where answering. I find that over all, the cards address what is most important.
