You do have to make sure they are well-shuffled and then cut them into 3 piles and stack them back in one stack. Some of us
take a moment to clear our minds and focus on the cards or the
situation we are reading for, but I've never heard it put like that.
I would think that a good shuffling would "wake up" any deck.

From what I've heard, there are several rituals.
But for me, I just take the cards out and starts to do reading with them.
Simple as that.
I remembered they were very accurate readings! :D

i used to put them out under a full moon before reading them.... but i just recieved four decks for solstice, and i couldn't wait :D.
i decided to ask each deck, what it would teach me or what it would best be used for. ....so while i'm shuffling them for the first time..... feelings and words pop into my mind. .... so i write them down.
deck one, this incredible feeling of happiness and joy comes over me. first card, the world, crossed by three of cups :)
second deck, started thinking of my family. cards relating to my family come up.
third deck, i'm feeling slightly irritable. position 9 (of the c.c.) is temperance. final outcome; prudence (minchiate deck) hahaha.
fourth deck, i'm even more distracted and impatient (noisy kids, new toys). final outcome temperance.
i'll still probably put the cards out next full moon. i enjoy the ritual.... but i sure don't see any need to and i'm definately not waiting that long to use them again. these cards worked perfectly well, without 'waking them up'.

Hi x|uyUn...
To begin with; welcome to the forum! Also, welcome to the adventure of Tarot!
I have never felt a need to "wake up" a Tarot deck. But when I get a new one, I usually go through it and study each card a little bit. Then I might shuffle them a little, then re-order them. This is all so that I can get myself familiar with the deck... learn it a little bit. I want to do a "new deck" reading as the very first reading done with the deck. All of this, I suppose, might serve to wake up a deck.
As far as shuffling, most people here would probably say "shuffle till you feel that you've shuffled enough" I usually find that 3 or 4 shuffles is sufficient... there have been a few times I've done more, but I don't remember shuffling fewer than 3 times.
By the way - the "new deck" spread I do is to lay out 3 cards in a verticle line...
1
2
3
1 = What will you teach me? (What the deck will bring to me.)
2 = What do you need from me? (What will I need to bring to get the most from the deck.)
3 = What will our relationship be like? (Overall picture of what the relationship with the deck will be.)
Hope this has been of some help
