the pic "poll"

I dunno how to make a real poll so here's my "poll:" what do you prefer the pics on ur deck to be made from/ look like?

1) computer generated
~or~
2) hand- made (like w/ colored pencils, oil pastels....etc.)

i was just wondering, as people have said that they prefer one deck over anoter because of the pictures.... I know that you should not pick a deck toatlly b-cause of the pics....

kayne  12 Dec 2002
Personally, I like a deck for it's individual qualities. There are some terrible computer-generated-images decks out there and then there are some brilliant ones (Cosmic Tribe - yay!) and the same goes for the hand created ones.

Generally I like decks to have intence colour and to contain a lot of people in them. :)

allibee  12 Dec 2002
my personal favourite is one that combines elements of both with mixed media.... hush hush.... that's what I'm working on now, my acrylic painting /photography/tonal/digital rendered deck, all done in a very sparing less is more way *LOL*.

Like everything in life it's horses for courses, some like this, some like that, some like the other, individuality. What appeals to one will be hated by another.
Have to agree with Kayne too, a lot of it is down to how well rendered it is.

Oh, hand work, definitely. It's usually warmer, deeper, more resonant, better-focused. Very few collaged or photographed decks can approach even an average hand-done deck. Photographed images are usually too specific, too of-the-moment, to be useful in the universal or archetypal senses in which Tarot cards operate. Just my opinion.

I think a deck artist is often a channel for higher forces, who see a chance to speak concretely to a wider group 'down here', and who will lend their aid and knowledge to anyone who sincerely tries to make a workable deck. It seems to me that a deck that will 'speak' to an audience is more likely to occur when the artist makes the images slowly and carefully by hand, rather than instantly by machine. I think it may work a little like automatic writing or mediumship, where an artist's direction can be 'overshadowed' by higher authority.

Not to say, obviously, that a collaged or photographed deck can't be done. Of course it can, and it's been done well. I'm saying that a good deck is more likely to happen when done by hand.

Silverlotus  12 Dec 2002
I perfer hand drawn pictures. I honestly can't say I've found a photo manipulated deck that I like. I especially decks that were done with Prisma Colour pencils, like the Robin Wood deck.

dangerdork  12 Dec 2002
This is a really interesting question for me, cause I'm a computer artist, but I have a really strong preference for hand drawn or painted cards. I hate photographic decks, don't have ANY.

I've been told I have a "painterly" style as a digital artist... I hope so, cause I started my deck as hand drawings I was scanning in to the computer but by the third card I had given up on hand drawing anything and it was all computer...

When I look at a deck, I want something rich and colorful and thoughtful enough that even if it was done on a computer, it LOOKS like it was hand done.

And I almost always pick my decks totally by the pics ;)

I am in agreement with you. I see it as more that there is the handstroke of the artist in the pictures, and that can be done with computers also, though a computer graphic person might have to be more conscious to do so, since the computer makes it perfect. And I think perfect tends to turn us humans off.

I remember, I think it was Madonna's original producer, (darn, can't think of his name to save my life. He also was a member of Chic and a solo artist). Anyway, he was talking about electronic percussion and he said that when he used electronic percussion, he had to program imperfections and slightly imprecise beats to make the sound real.

I think that is what a computer artist must do: imperfect the images to make them more human.

Peace!

PS, I am drawn by the pics too...especially color.

I suspect that if we changed the catagories to made by an artist vs. something else we will get more agreement. Well that was a useless statement. Lets try this one. I don't think everyone has quite the same idea of what hand drawn or computer generated means.

I grew up with cartoons and still love them. Fine art is fine art. It's the overall affect that counts.

I have said photorealistic is my preferrence in this forum but that is partly because the moody minors affect just doesn't do it for me. Straight photographs just don't do it for me either. I've come to expect more symbolism in my pictures. Look at the movie er video arts industry. They use enhanced photography, of real imperfect things and situations.

I love abstract art. I just think it is a truly rare piece that says anything more complex than "I'm beauty".

More clearly, I have hand drawn and photographic decks. It can all be cool.

wavebreaker  13 Dec 2002
If you would have asked me a while ago, I would probably have said hand-painted and that I don't like computer-generated. But since then I've bought the Portal Tarot, which I absolutely love. And the Cosmic Tribe is very high on my wishlist.

So I can't really say anymore which "technique" I like best, I judge a deck by it's general appearance, regardless of how it was created.

zander770  13 Dec 2002
by "handmade w/pencils, paint" i assume you meant "and then 'processed' and laminated," etc, and not like a "personally drawn deck, like the b.o.t.a. (i am a member and have two such "handmade" decks--by me, of course!--which i never use for readings; only study/meditation), so, i'll assume the former.

interesting question, really, because i always like the "handmade," "artistic & symbollic" decks...save till the faerie ring oracle was published!

now, that deck i like a lot, as well!

I love decks that are painted. I have never seen a colaged/photografed deck that appealed to me, but I have to admit I don't like drawn ones either. I think that has partly to do with edges, I like it when objects merge into another.
Also the colors of painted ones are more vibrant and alive in my opinion. It might be just my imagination but I always feel that an artist gives a piece of himself with each work and that feeling is stronger in paintings.
The only time I can be attracted to drawn ones is when they are in bl/w or just one color. That way they keep their unique style without becomming a painting wannabe.

hell this is hard to explain! Hope I made some sense....

Maan  13 Dec 2002
I don't even own a computer made deck or collage
My favo decks are painted with oils ( spiral and the phantasmagoric) or with colour pencils( hanson roberts, fey, robin wood)

The fearies oracle from Froud is also pianted but i don't know with what medium...there absolutly gorgeouse anyway!

I cast my vote with Kaynes! (although I do not necessarily need lots of people. All I ask for is well made and researched deck. The media is the least of my concerns.

Violet Gargoyle  13 Dec 2002
The Gemini in me likes both. I have all sort of mediums in different decks. My feeling is, as long as it fits the theme, its okay by me....

i meant the Fairy Ring Oracle (got the "Ring" right). that's about the 15th time this week i've spelled it "Fearie," and, i DO "know why" that is . . .

i'd (among others, i'm sure!) would very much love to learn how to do that..ya know: create our own cards, on computer; on-line. i know/see a lot of tarot sites (like our very own, here!) that do "community tarot decks," and i would just LOVE, for example, to do the #15 key AND the 2 of pentacles (to name two).

might you know any "on-line classes"?

The only decks I really find myself leaning away from are the photography decks. There is something about them that is to strict, inflexible, I don't know it's hard to explain. If the person on the photograph is a real person they can't seem to be anyone else because they are real, but if the person is drawn they aren't real so they can be anyone or mean anything. Jeez I'm sounding like an idiot. It's why when I give my students a creative writing assignment I try not to give them an example because then that is the only thing the assignment can be and they siece to use their own creative minds. Well for all that was worth there it is.

I don't like photographic decks, like Cosmic Tribe and some others, and I also don't like the collage decks as in Zerner-Farber. I really prefer hand done art works for each card, as in Haindl, Ancestral Path, Templar, and Dreampower, to name a few. I now love Rider Waite-----I still don't particularly like the art work on that deck or the colors, but I truly appreciate the symbolism in the deck and get more and more attached to it by the day. I also don't like anime or comic book type art, and I think Hello Kitty and some of those are just silly and I wouldn't own a deck like that. Now, if I had to choose something I feel is definitely NOT tarot, it would be Hello Kitty. But I know there are those who have it and love it and I mean them no disrespect. I just personally don't like the deck.

truthsayer  14 Dec 2002
i don't really have a strong criterion for what i like and dislike in a deck except i like to see cohesiveness of theme, variety in images, and symbolism(shapes and words) that convey that the creator has some personal understanding of tarot. that the deck isn't just a senior art project and afterwards, the deck is forgotten as something done for a grade.

i like photographic, collage, drawings, paintings, etc. i don't want to give the impression that i buy or trade for every tarot deck that i see. i don't. something about the deck has to draw me in. for example, i've been exploring different websites for oracles and tarot decks. i read about the creator's tarot philosophy and looked at the art. i became fascinated with greg hoose's fairy tarot. the imagery was painted and abstract but it spoke of an understanding of fairies unique to the fairy decks i already have. also i've been salivating over francene hart's website on sacred geometry. i realize it's something i've long been familiar with but never thought of it as "sacred geometry". the art is visionary and some images quite beautiful. i bought sacred geometry as much for the art as to learn more about the philosophy of francene hart. the fairy, i bought mainly b/c i was drawn to the images. there didn't seem to be a strong guiding principal to expounded upon to guide it.

i feel that i can learn something from most decks even if i don't particularly like the art or agree with the philosophy. the universe has declared that i cannot decide against a deck until i work w/ it some. ask jewel and faunabay if you don't believe me. ;)

Well... I'm afraid I'm going to have to waffle and say "both". As with many otheres, the deck can be either computer generated, photo, paint, pencil, whatever. It must, however, appeal to me on some level. I still use and am very fond of my old RWS deck. I love the imagery of my Röhrig Tarot. I love the unicorns and dragons on my Unicorn and Dragon Tarots. I'm hoping for the Victoria Regina Tarot for Christmas. ;)

As for photograpic style decks... I've started work on my own... but this may take a while. It's going to take a lot of research to find just the right photos.
