oracle and tarot: differences

Ok, I have a question: what is the difference between a tarot deck and a oracle deck? how do you use oracle decks?

I'm asking this because I've seen a wonderful oracle deck (from franklin and mason) with faeries, but I don't know what are those cards suppose to show me. Is it for meditaion only? Or can we use it to do readings, just like a regular tarot deck?

Thank you for any feedback

Webster's Universal Dictionary - oracle -

'the revelation or response from a medium' - among other entries along similar lines.

Most people would use them interchangeably, although 'oracle' seems to imply some kind of divine message being sent, such as the Oracle at Delphai.

All divination (a better word) systems overlap, so it would be best to consult the book that came with the deck to see how best to use the information contained in that particular deck. Perhaps you read them as tarot; prehaps you do not or should not. For example, The Moon Oracle has cards, but they pertain to phases of the moon; using tarot cards and using their Moon interpretations, or using the Moon Oracle cards and trying to apply tarot knowledge to them may not work nor would be compatible.

Learn to use the system alone before you try combining them.

And do tell us what kind of results you have!

I see it as a difference in categories, like asking what is the difference between a tree and a sycamore. An Oracle deck is called as such because it is a different tree from a tarot. It does not have the standards that are accepted as tarot, such as 78 cards (though some tarot decks may add a one or two cards), a major arcana of 22 cards, a minor arcana of 56 cards with four suits. The Fairy Ring Oracle can't call itself tarot because it does not have the standard number of cards, or a major arcana or even the same suits. It is used for the same type of issues as tarot is, as well as meditation. I would see tarot as being a type of Oracle deck, but not all Oracle decks are tarot.

Peace!

I cannot speak for others, nor can I speak for fairies…

Soul Cards (one and two) are Oracle cards which I use (and love).

There is one HUGE difference…Tarot cards have meanings…each card has a meaning attached to it.

Soul Cards have NO meanings…or identifying titles.

Actually similar in some respects to…toothpicks.

Very highly recommended.

I agree with Khtruman that Tarot is a form of oracle but not all oracles are tarot. What we call oracles vary in structure from the tarot.

The Fairy Ring for example has less cards, it has 8 festival cards (pagan wheel of the year holidays), and then has 4 suits which represent the 4 seasons of the year. I have found this deck to be fabulous for readings ... it is brutally honest. What is odd is that I am more of a spiritual development type person than a divination person, but I use this deck strictly for divination. The book refers to various fairies that it does not recommend you to meditate with ... I tend to disagree with this, but that is a whole 'nother discussion all together. But anyhow I am not inclined to medidate with the deck at all. There are several great spreads in the book. If you get the deck I would encourage you to read the book ... just don't let the negative stuff about some faeries get to you ... faeries are not good or bad, they simply are. Once you can be comfortable with that, then you might avoid some apprehention which the book might lead you towards. Overall the book and the deck are very good in my opinion. One of my favorite decks.

If you have any more questions about this deck feel free to PM me.

tarot is an oracle, even playing cards, toothpicks, pebbles, a bowl, can be used as an oracle.

all oracle cards are different. the thing they hold in common is that their purpose is for divination.

for simplicity and clarity, this forum calls tarot, tarot and the rest oracles.
