Seeing some of the pictures of Beautiful and Historic Tarot decks. I have often wondered (as an Art Philistine) which Artists/Subjects people might like to see as Potential new Tarot decks. I have to admit a liking for the medieval/weird - A few of my random (macabre? ;)) thoughts:
- Arthur Rackham - Cats
(obviously!) and/or Witches?
- Goya - Something suitably diabolic in flight?
- Hans Baldung Grien - Gross things boiling in Cauldrons? ;)
- Collin de Plancy - Something suitably infernal?
Hmmm... Woodcuts, Bestiaries, Psalters, Books of Hours, Alchemical - Book of Lambsprinck? etc. Maybe some of these are already in print?

P.S. I hope the Wiccans will forgive me for perpetuating stereotypes?
P.P.S. You are allowed WHOLESOME images too! :D

i think a vincent van gogh deck would be interesting. van gogh would be the fool. the image would be the self portrait of where his ear is bandaged from slicing off part of it.

I think you might be talking about art STYLES, as opposed to artists, since the lists above include only dead people. They may not be taking on any new commissions.
That being the case, it's possible to find artists who emulate earlier styles, and, who knows?, maybe they'd be amenable to creating a new deck.
If I had a wish list of deceased artists that I could talk into doing some new work, it would include Frank Frazetta, Henri Matisse, whoever it was who did the Book of Kells, and George Herriman. I can almost imagine what sort of Tarots they'd come up with.

i would love one of henri toulouse lautrec or one in the style of modigliani or one of klee, miro, magritte, ensor...!
actually i would love one of an artist of every style of the 20st century...that would be very interesting for my study ;)
and especcially one in the style of art brut! very intense, like fautrier or wols or dubuffet!!!
and for an erotic one: schiele...then it would be the first erotic one i would have :)
and klimt...
and richter...
and so much more ;)
but about the artists now working on tarotprojects: i long to the mary-el the most...
with love,
sara.

The Book of Kells?
You know, that would be a WONDERFUL look for a deck! Why didn't anyone else think of that? Dover Publications even has a number of reference books for that style.

Could I nominate 4 amazing [and living] textile artists:
Rise Nagin, Maria-Theresa Fernandes, Nancy Erickson, and Alice Kettle - very different styles but all their works are steeped in symbolism.
I'd love to see a deck that Frida Kahlo might have painted.
And how Lucien Freud would paint the High Priestess.

Yeah, I'm sure with a little funds, time and application one coud do something based one of these: http://ragnarokpress.com/artype/kells/index.html :)
On modern artists I recall someone called Fay Pomerance who is often described as a "Caballistic artist". I must admit I've only ever seen one or two images by her... rather elusive, I guess ;)

Ohhh, Thomas Kinkaid, the painter of light himself!!! You could sell tarot decks in Hallmark stores all over the country!!!! They could even do prints and holiday cards with goofy little rhymes... :D (hope you all know I am kidding)
Ohh, wait, I hear that Tony Bennett fancies himself quite an artist... })
Peace!

Goya, definitely.
His "Nude Maja" would make an excellent Empress; "Duchess of Alba", one of the Queens. There are quite a number of candidates for the Devil, though - "Saturn Swallowing His Son (?)" and "Witches' Sabbath" to name a few. I've been a Goya fan since I can remember. Others - Magritte, da Vinci, Michelangelo (both sculpture and painttings), Picasso, Matisse, some local artists. rostie's suggestion for one of every artist of the 20th century would be interesting, but I suspect the styles would clash so greatly it'd be almost unusable as a reading deck for me.
Modigliani, never.

Yeah, Hudson ! Where's our 'Kells Tarot'? I want one! There's got to be somebody on this board who could turn their hand to creating a medieval Irish Tarot! There's so much to work from; those guys painted some wonderful pages perfect for Tarot imagery. The Book of Kells, the Lindisfarne gospel, the book of Durrow... there's loads of psalters and whatnot to plunder. It could be pulled together like Ovenall's VR Tarot: collage.

Monet would be soooo beautiful!
I'd like to see the Unicorn deck redone too ...
Not exactly what you were going for, but I'd still like to see it :)

Another candidate might be Wm. Hogarth - Slightly dark maybe, but you also get the possibility of adding "says bubbles" or captions. :D
Now there's and idea... })

Don't laugh Rota! I designed a Celtic style illuminated F with ferret for the back of my ferret deck before deciding the image didn't really fit with the theme. So hey! One card done! So long as it takes an "F" that is!
