"...Rapid Action Telescope for Transient Phenomena, the first autonomous observatory in France".
Found this entry while dinking around on the net; thought maybe others would be intrigued. the URL is: http://tarot.cesr.fr/ , or http://tarot.cesr.fr/tarot1/Default.htm , and the site's in French of course, but it shows some scientific equipment for studying celestial phenomena. Interestingly, the acronym turns out to spell 'tarot'. I can't figure out whether the name is intentional or coincidental...

Rota,
Somehow, I doubt it's a coincidence.
Scientists of all shapes and sizes love fun acronyms. At the lab where I work, one of our MRI pulse sequences is called SPRITE. (Single Point Ramped Imaging with T1 Enhancement).
The director of the Centre insists that it has nothing to do with the soft drink, but when we all got together for a potluck supper at his house, guess what was in the fridge...

"Somehow, I doubt it's a coincidence."
Like you, I'm certain it's not. Those French -- so wacky! Irony/sarcasm doesn't translate well in written speech.
There doesn't seem to be an emoticon for 'tongue - in - cheek'... -)
I just love science humor, because it's so rare.
