I was laying out my cards at the library, scribbling notes about them in my notebook, when I was approached by this lady who asked if I could use tarot to communicate with the dead, or with ghosts! I told her no (at least, I am not able to), and tried to explain in my own way what tarot was all about, and she told me she had seen 'clairvoyant' tarot readers use the tarot for that purpose before, as if in a seance. I was extremely skeptical though, and I think some will agree with me after the infamous 'angels and cards' debate, as well as the many times it has been discussed on what tarot actually is (naturally different people differ).
What do you think - rather than unseen forces controlling the turn of the card, do you think tarot can actually be used to communicate with them? I do believe that communicating with the dead, ghosts, spirits, etc may be possible, but I don't believe that it is achievable using tarot ALONE, although I think tarot can be used in accompaniment to enhance and clarify such 'communication'.

You've worded it very well Demonesse.
I've been reading Tarot on & off for the past 7 years. Just recently I've been picking up on spirits being around the person I'm reading for, or just being in the same room as a person. I think that spirits can come in contact with people without using tarot cards, but I think that a person must be using a tool in which they can tap into the spirit realm? if that makes sense. Hmm, but I've heard of ppl coming in contact with spirits without using any tool? I'd like to know the answer to this too!

I don't know... suppose there was somebody I loved very much whom I lost through death... I think that if I read the cards to touch them in spirit, then they would respond and I'd feel that the loved one would be close. It's not something I've ever done, however, and I keep getting shocked at all the varying faces of Tarot... it really does have many levels.

Yes, I do think Tarot can be used to communicate with the dead.
This past Christmas Eve day, my grandmother died. On February 13, which would have been her 98th birthday, I decided to lay out some cards to see if she had anything she wanted to say to me. I feel very strongly that the message was from her, not just my imagination or wishful thinking.
I'll post the reading over in the Your Readings section.

Yes, I think tarot can be used to communicate with spirits. Back when I was a silly gungho teenage wiccan (this isn't saying Wiccans are silly; I was silly and gungho and teenage and wiccan) I used the tarot for all sorts of things including this, just to be "cool". I grew up and alas lost a bit of good with the bad: I'm too busy these days trying to decide what a spirit 'is' to strike up good conversations with one. :)

I experimented with tarot and post-death communication briefly in high school after the death of a friend of mine and again during my second year of college. virtually all of the people I hung out with that year had lost someone very close to them (strange, yes)and I found that tarot was a way of having what amounted to a "conversation" between myself, my friend and their loved one.
During the readings, there were some intensely powerful feelings floating around...afterwards, I'd say the thoughts were more along the lines of "did that just happen?"
I'll admit to being really interested in seeing this thread pop up...I haven't attempted anything like this for a while and was sort of glad to hear that others had had a similar experience. If anything, it's a testament to the versatility of tarot--it certainly takes things a little beyond the tarot-as-fourtune-telling misconception.
ooo. have to cut this short--cat is attacking sofa.

Yes, it happens even if one is not trying. It has happened to me that way, leading to some notable chains of syncronicity that Jung would have laughed at. For me, it seems that certain people seemed to genuinely care enough about me to make an appearance that started with the cards, lead to other external events and back through the cards.
Mind you, a critical frame of mind is important to any experiment that one undertakes (for me at least), thus I try to allow events to unfold without focusing upon the moment in cognitive analysis. Some people get spooked at the idea of spirits but I believe it's just another thing to get used.
