Is it bad luck

There are lots of romours in the uk.

Is it bad luck to buy your own tarot deck. If so why does my element and spiral tarot give me a great reading and never bring me bad luck

Well, Cool... if that were true.. I think this forum would have THE worst luck in the world.. check out the thread in tarot decks section on Owning up about what decks you have. I don't think we all got those multitude of decks as gifts.

I am one to believe that the "luck" you get is the luck you expect.

LOL i thought the samething. My friend acctually gave a nice deck away cos he heard that and i laughed. I needed to know. I know some in that thread who have 108 so i read. LOL

Hi, Too Cool!

Yes, there is a thread on this somewhere and I'm sure someone will give you a link (I've never worked out how to do that) in due course.

I just wanted to say that I have heard this before but don't believe it: I get perfectly good readings from decks I've chosen myself and I prefer them to the IJJ Swiss which was my first deck as well as being a present.

I firmly believe you make your own luck in life.

Here's a previous thread on the subject.

You might also find this thread on tarot superstitions interesting.

It isn't just the Uk, there are superstitions everywhere. I think people develop them to give their Tarot practice more mystique. Personally, I think they are self limiting - and this can mean up to and including the ones you develop yourself. 'It helps me if I do X as it gets me in the right frame of mind' is a world away from 'it's bad luck unless I do X'. And of course you can always make your beliefs like that come true if you choose to.

I am thinking of starting a Tarot superstition of my own. How about 'It is bad luck to read the cards unless you have a small bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk that someone else has bought you first'

:D

Aerin! You give me shivers down my back. It is a BIG bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk that you have to have. The small one will attract all sorts of negative stuff. It doesn't matter if you have bought it, or if someone has bought it for you. But if it is stolen, your Tarot cards will go up in a puff of smoke. That is a well-known fact.

You mean... You didn't know?

When you are paying for your new Black&Decker tool kit, you HAVE to...

1) Stand on one leg
2) Put your right index finger on your nose
3) Jump up and down ten times
4) Whilst singing the Erdel Schrerdel song.

Because otherwise your new Black&Decker tool kit will never ever work properly!

;)

Okay so it's silly, but it's the same thing. Just cuz you don't purchase an item in the 'proper' way does not mean it won't work properly! The Tarot deck is like a Black&Decker drill... Whether it works properly or not doesn't depend on who buys it for you, but on how well you use it!

Go on Too Cool, buy all the decks you want! (I have bought 108... And I have always had some particularly good luck, mainly because I actually MAKE my own good luck. ;))

never really did beleive it but i know people who have got rid of their decks due to this romour and i think it is funny. I use my cards right. I done a short spread yesterday telling me about my pregenacy so if it is bad luck then they wouldnt be that accurate. Thanks for the comments i feel better now. I have had 3 out of 10 decks as gift but i find the ones i brought are the ones that work for me. Dont ask me why becaues i dont know.

Some one has already posted this, I didn't read through all the posts before posting.

No, buying your own deck is NOT bad luck or anything. The reason why this came about is because WAAAAAAAAAYYYY back when, when witches were burned at the stake, tarot cards were scarce to come by. If you "did" get your own deck some how, then you risked your life. As superstitious as people used to be back then (and some still are) it was said that if you bought your own deck, it will curse you.

It was EXTREMELY difficult to come by decks in the first place, so usually, if someone knew how to read cards, it was taught from either a close family member, or a close friend of the family and s/he would usually hand the deck down when confident that their student wouldn't report them as being a witch.

Some people still follow this belief in a historic superstitious fashion. Supersitions only have the power to be true if you give it that power. If you honestly believe that walking under a ladder will bring you bad luck for the day, then you will probably be more keen on noticing all the bad things that happend that day vs. the good things when in reality, it probably isn't much different then the day before.

What's important is what makes YOU feel more comfortable and connected to the deck. If you need to cross yourself and set a crystal on your deck after each reading to cleanse the deck, then by all means, do it. Just keep in mind this is different for everyone and to respect others beliefs, even if they are superstitions.

Yeah, if we had to be gifted with our deck, we'd be waiting till doomsday for that special one we really want!

Buy all the decks you want, the publishers will love you, you'll get the cards that you like & everyone (but your pocketbook) will be happy. Why add 'mystery' to tarot when it'll be detrimental to all those who feel they have to wait for a deck--possibly years--because of this!
