Asking the same question over and over without giving things time to develop can be a bad habit to fall into. As is doing a reading on EVERYTHING instead of just going ahead and living life.
Usually it's best to only ask about a specific thing once every two weeks or so. That way you're allowing time for things to develop.
But you can do readings on many questions, just make sure they're all different questions.

I don't do a lot of self readings, in terms of "what will happen to me?" types of questions. As a big believer in fate, I don't want to know what will happen. I'd rather just let it happen.
I do throw cards quite frequently for meditation purposes, without asking a particular question.

When I'm feeling really into tarot, I do a three card daily draw, often at the end of the day as a kind of reflection on the day.
If I do a Celtic Cross spread, then I tend to come back to it over a few days. I wouldn't do one of those for myself every day ;)

I do a three card draw at the beginning of every week and then reflect at the end of the week in my journal.
The spread is in the accompanying book to The Shining Tribe Tarot:
........3........
1..............2
1 Spiritual history
2. Spiritual challenge
3. Spiritual gift

I don't do readings for myself daily or anything, but when I do get the inclination to draw the cards for myself I find myself doing at least 3 different spreads just for clarification. I have a tendancy to go a 'bit' overboard when I get into something. I have been known to stay up all night reading spread after spread :) .

I do readings for myself as a way of exercise in knowing myself and knowing the cards. Like some have mentioned here, I don't do "what will happen?" readings for myself, but I will do mind/body/spirit readings or other variations of three card readings. I think it is valuable to use the tarot often, just as it is valuable in any study or activity to practice it often.
As a writer, I am told that the best way to become a better writer is to write. Wouldn't it make sense that the best way to become a better tarotist is to read tarot?
I would suggest to use self reading for meditation, for play, for just journaling. Do some informal readings. Every time you read the tarot it doesn't have to be a formal reading, just as every time you write it doesn't have to be a formal treatise. This type of play gives you a better feel of the whole process when you actually do a formal reading.

Khatruman pretty much summed up what I was going to say.
It is important to get to know the cards and to handle them often so you feel comfortable with them. There are many meanings to each card, the deck is an inexhaustable well of knowledge and insight, and if you only read them once a month, or once a week , how can you possibly draw on all that information and be able to learn it? Also, you need to "tune" yourself into the particular deck you are using. Get a comfortable feel for it, so when you pick it up it feels like coming home.
