if you could have a deck magically appear in your hand, a one off - just for you ........ what would it be???
something to do with a favourite film, book, band or time in history???? use your imagination ........, but i'm sure you know exactly what you would want!!! do tell .......
FOR ME ......... i would like tarot images of 70s heavy metal bands, phycadelic colours, a few skulls, motorcycles, ....... lots of sexy pictures, maybe with quotes from fantastic and inspirational songs ............ WOW

My gift from heaven might not be a tarot deck at all, but an oracle deck of my own making, since I often am confused by the archetypes used in the tarot, and would wish to use my own.
My deck from heaven would NOT: arrive in a cardboard box, have an ugly plaid back, or be too large for my hands! Hopefully I could get David Palladini to draw it, and autograph it, while he's at it! The cards would never wear out, would be wonderfully flexible and supple without break-in, and would never become creased, lost or torn!

for me it would have to be beautiful, in an old style but new, with out being to dark (people i read for are alwais freeking out when they see certin cards!)
i would like it to follow a marseilles tradition.
without mooving away from the original imagery. (jugement - robin wood)
but i'de like diferent decks for diferent situations.
i also like them with humor. some times i do like them dark...
ah! forget it! i don't know what i want!
guess i'll just keep looking.

My heavenly deck would be an oracle deck of Elves, the artist creating the deck being Brian Froud, but of ONLY Elves. The scenery in his art work would remain the same, often foresty, sometimes the faeries are alone, or there are a few in a darkend backround.
In any case, you get the idea. I know that faeries includes elves, and there are some in the cards that I do have, I would just like a whole deck with nothing but elves, but not cute santa elves, and not little elves that are the size of a grass leaf.

OOooo-- this is too fun !
I would want a true Edward Gorey deck- using authentic images from his work , fully illustrated on all the minors.
Then I would want a Tarot of the Crystal Skulls , with images of the ancient crystal skulls & artifacts of the Native South American cultures- photographic.
How about the Tarot of Ye Olde Witches ? Featuring English engravings from the 15-1600's .
And perhaps the Tarot of Dame Edna.

I don't know how to respond to this thread ... but I so want to join in!!!!!!!!
I don't think that there is any theme that I would have to connect them all.
Errrrm ... I do kind of like dark decks sometimes, but maybe I would change the word dark to either mysterious or haunting. Did you ever see that Madonna video, Frozen? There was a darkness to that but it was sensual and mysterious. The symbolism and spiritual elements of the song really showed their best in those three or so minutes. So ... if you could put that into my deck from heaven, I would be happy.
I would have an illustrated set of minors; maybe they would be based on the Waite but artistically, darker and deeper - not knocking Pamela of course as I do love her art work.
One thing I don't like in Court Cards is when they show little personality or difference from each other. My courts would be beautiful (sounds shallow but isn't it great when you see a good looking face in a deck and their eyes burn out straight into yours?). Maybe one would have to look like Jonathan Rhyss Myers!
Nothing too twee. Just a deck that you could literally lose yourself in. Isnt that everybodies idea of a deck from Heaven???

I'd like a real Mucha Tarot, not the pale imitation of the Castelli Art Nouveau deck.
A Pre-Raphaelite Tarot would be marvellous, but we'd need an artist who could channel Burne-Jones or Waterhouse.
If I were being really esoteric, I'd love a tarot based on antique Pressed Glass. The suits would be Sowerby for Cups, especially one of their vases with frogs and bullrushes, Davidson cloud-glass for Wands, the clean Art Deco lines of Bagley for Swords and Davidson's glow-in-the-dark Pearline dishes for Pentacles!

Wonderful idea !! But I would forget about an artist to channel anybody- a collage deck of the Pre - Raphaelites done like the upcoming Golden Tarot would be much better for me. Otherwise, you have obvious imitations of great works that just look like there is something wrong with them - at least to my eyes. I was very interested in the Durer & the Da Vinci until I found out the terrible truth !
(P.S., Hedera- I would love to see Dame Edna as the Devil !)

I'd love to see Dame Edna as every single person on all the cards. How about a Dame Edna Goddess Oracle. What a hoot!
I think I'd like a deck with illustrations drawn like the Alchemical, but multicultural in skin tone like the World spirit, with lots of animals and a modest border. I'm most comfortable with a RW interpretative system and illustrated minors.
I, also, am very much looking forward to the Golden Tarot and while I have others on my wish list that is on my Definite Buy list.

(Alissa starts drooling, ohhhhh.....)
A Pre-Raphealite deck. Now THAT would be something, wouldn't it? Yes lots of Waterhouse, and Rossetti, and Burne-Jones....
And a Mucha deck ... I do have a fondness for Mucha....
Wonderful ideas...~!

Or a Calvin & Hobbes Tarot. ;)

_______________
Mucha is Alfons Mucha, the most famous artist of the Czech (i.e. Bohemian) Succession. "Succession" is the Central European term for Art Nouveau.
He lived and worked in Prague (YEY!) His family still live in the original "Mucha" house up near the Castle, though it isn't open to the public. There IS a Mucha museum in Prague - worth seeing.
Okay - here is the shameless plug bit (come on, this is Mucha, how can I NOT mention Tarot of Prague!) our "Strength" is based on Mucha's style (we can't directly use one of his pictures, as there are of course copyright issues, but we carefully based the main figure on aspects of four of his paintings). We've also used pictures of "The Municipal House" that he helped to design and paint (if you love Art Nouveau, you HAVE to visit that building - it's incredible).
I agree that a real Mucha tarot would be marvelous. Maybe one day I'll pluck up the courage to knock on the door of the Mucha house (I have seen Mr Mucha - who I guess must be the grandson of Alfons - and he doesn't look very scary) and ask if they would give permission. I suppose you never know...
(ps - our site should finally be updated later this week, but Strength is there currently)

Well... I had to think about this for a while... there are sooooo many beautiful Tarot decks out there already... what would I want that I couldn't get one way or another? Hmmmm?
How about a Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tarot?
Arthur Dent as The Fool.
Zaphod Beeblebrox as The Devil, perhaps?
Trillian as the High Priestess I think...
And Marvin, the paranoid android... hmmmmm? Death perhaps?

OOooh, didn't even think of that, a whole deck of Waterhouses' work, WOW that would be GORGEOUS!
After thinking about this some more, in addition to my heavenly Elven oracle, I would also LOVE to see a tarot deck based off of Cinderella. You've got all the characters you would need. They did a Alice in Wonderland deck, why not? :)
Another deck that I think would be cool is a tarot deck based off of Harry Potter, but then again, I'm a Harry Potter nutzoid LOL.

oh Diana, has switzerland become a cultural void so quickly? LOL
Dame Edna Everage is, Possum, an Australian Housewife and Megastar, bigger than Queen Elizabeth, Possum!
Gladiolis and hornrimmed ornate glasses are her trademark, and a poor creature called Madge is her sidekick.
Dame Edna is the alter ego of Barry whatshisname, lol

I want a deck that's manga-style (there are some that are more or less manga style, but I want something a little closer). Illustrated minors, interesting, distinct court cards. And I would rather have Princesses than Pages. I would want more or less traditional Rider-Waite imagery/meanings because I'm still learning, but distinct enough so that it's still interesting.
Other than that, I want my Matrix tarot. But one that's really well done. Some media-themed decks seem really cool and well thought out, but others are kind of random and meaningless.

Maybe Edward Hopper, or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, or Degas

The art would be like Mark Ryden's album covers for "The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter" and "The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny", but not like his other art, which is kinda creepy.
There'd be lots of Masonic paraphenalia (tools, eyes, architecture and ruins) and tattoo cliches (sultry ladies, lucky 13, skulls, etc.); fezzes, lush flora, angry tiki gods, intoxicating fluids and exotic locales would abound. Mebbe some Egyptiana for good measure.
There would be subtle but manifold references to Plato, Borges, Nietzsche, the Golden Bough, and Islamic mysticism, plus a tad of Lovecraft and William S. Burroughs.
Tenuous but unmistakable allusions to weird and forgotten ritual practices would be woven into the fabric of the whole.
The reverse of every card would be emblazoned with a heraldic device of my own devising, replete with aforementioned sultry ladies acting as terrible guardians, an all-seeing eye, and the motto: "Who shall attain?"

talking famous artists ...... i would have ...... 'Chuck Close', .... or perhaps a land artist ... 'Andy Goldsworthy'
*****Actually ..... a 'Brit Art' deck would not be a bad idea .... 'Damian Hirst' .... 'Tracy Emin' .... etc ... their work would lend itself very well to that kind of interpretation.
