This forum is the most peaceful I've ever been to

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 30 Jun 2003, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Seriously, I've browsed pretty much every subject on this forum, and it contains hardly any of what you see virtually every other place on the web. Where's the flaming? Where's the fighting? Where's the name calling? It's ridiculous how calm and open people are with their interpretations and accept of other people's views. Because of this, it makes me feel more confident that studying the Tarot is the right thing to do and will help me live a more peaceful existance. Seriously, a bunch of smart humble people discussing. I'm so impressed. Do you realize how rare a place this is on the internet?

You are very right Jaykob ... I hope you stay around.

I have also popped in and seen other boards and there is a lot of battling going on; people picking at each other etc. It isn't like that here, I don't think, and that is why I post on this forum.

Look forward to listening and learning from you in the future.

**also, a big thank-you to all of the people responsible for keeping this forum going - it does mean a lot to the people like us that use it **

Hi Jaykob,

Welcome to the community. :)

We do realise. We work hard to keep it that way. I'm moving this thread to the Talking Tarot board because it belongs there. Don't worry, it's no big deal - I still write posts that get moved from time to time.

Take a look around at all the boards. Drop in at the New Members board and tell us a bit about yourself.

Meanwhile, I look forward to sharing with and learning from you. Enjoy.

Those of us who don't frequent other forums don't have a frame of reference for how pleasant it is here. What we have is fairly special.

Happily, too, we don't battle rivers of spam. My first job in the morning is often straining out offers for lower mortgage rates, surefire investment opportunities in Ghana, and ways to expand my anatomy from my email inbox. How pleasant not to have to wade through that noise here!

You took the words right out of my mouth, Jaykob!

That's *exactly* how I felt when I first joined this site last summer, and it's still how I feel about it now.

Thank you for pointing out what a wonderful place we have here. I think sometimes (especially if you've been here often), you tend to forget ;).

I look forward to hearing from you more on the Forums, and welcome! :)

I agree with all of you here.
It is so nice to see people discuss their opinions and differences with peace. There is so much to learn from everybody here, so many insightful and knowledgeable people.
Thanks Jaykob for reminding us of that.
And thanks to all the moderators who are always so tactful!

This is the only forum I read daily. All others have fallen by the wayside because I was sick of the infighting and spam. This is a wonderful place. And I agree with you Jaykob, it does add to the image of Tarot being a good tool for self-discovery and peaceful living. Maybe that's why things are so nice here? :)

Astraea  30 Jun 2003
Yes, Jaykob, the level of integrity and civility at Aeclectic have impressed me, too. It's a wonderful forum that is so much more than that -- it truly is a community, filled with people who are knowledgeable, helpful and committed to personal growth and development.

Probably one reason why I can't get enough of this place... I agree that we are very open here. I think it has to do somewhat with tarot, and also with us who are of such differing backgrounds.

Much credit must also go to the moderating staff too. I know there have been times I have been involved in a disagreement, and felt like I wanted to just leave, but there have beeen so many encouraging people here!!!

Yes, sometimes we get a little aggravated at questions from new comers that we hear over and over, about how you cannot buy your own tarot or something like that...that a deck won't like you if you do something or other, but overall we are patient. And we are all here to learn, and discuss. Might help that there is a plurality of females here, not to be sexist, but we minority males tend not to be Alpha Males, wanting to rule the roost. It is almost like a university experience here. The goal is to learn and grow and share.

Besides, we just love to entice newcomers in to buying more and more decks... })

PS, and the laughable irony here is that many outsiders consider tarot to be EVIL!!! Well, if evil makes people as understanding and cooperative as this, let me sign on the dotted line... in blood })

__Totalitarian states are peaceful too, Jaykob.

___I would not jump to conclusions based on what you see on the surface . Tarot is right for some, not right for others & it has nothing to do with how people here act.

There are many wonderful people here & also the not so wonderful, just like any other place.

but we do disagree and fight all the time - as siblings or close friends. Name calling you will mostly find in chat forum, I believe that is the proper place for such (correct me if I am wrong moddies :P)

We do have threads that make bombs tick - yes even here at aeclectic. We have threads splitting our loving community in 2 - no, no, no I am not saying it :D

Our differences are what makes the learning so fun I think, differences can cause quarrels. We have many great moderators and members who makes the unity strong enough to stand corrected, see through differences and even disagreeing without letting it become a defeat.

Respect is the key word here - disrespecting others is disbelieving in your self. And we do believe in our selves and aeclectic.

Welcome to the forums Jaykob, hope you will have a great time and tons to share :)

Ok, I guess they can be, but I've yet to hear of one through history that has also encouraged discussion and peaceful dissent. I am simply comparing this place to other places on the internet, and stating my opinion, that this is the most mature forum I've ever visited. You can visit just about any other place on the internet and it's just littered with hate and intolerance. I'm no saint either. I've definetly been antagonistic myself on other forums when half the people there jump to unreasonable conclusions about ones character and whatnot.

I never jumped to any conclusions, I simply said it made me feel more confident. It seems reasonable to consider the success Tarot has has in shaping others when determining the value in could possibly have in your own life. If everyone who practiced using Tarot were hateful murdering psychopaths, I may think twice before considering the helpful implications of studying it. So, in this way, I think the way the practitioners of a certain code of ethics and/or philosophy act does, infact, reflect back on the philosophy itself. Of course there are other things to consider too.

Jaykob, You probably have no idea how timely your post is, but I thank you for posting it!

Enjoy Aeclectic!

Diana  30 Jun 2003
What a positive way to start out your journey with Aeclectic, Jaykob. Thank you! And a very warm welcome to you. :)

We have our differences sometimes, and also as we are all human beings on here (well, I think so anyway, although there are a few who may be hiding their wings), we do sometimes let our emotions and our personal history play tricks on us.

But everyone is very willing here to forgive and forget and we're a close-knit and happy community indeed.

Don't mind Tarotphelia! If she hadn't joined this forum, we'd have had to go and take her by the hand and force her to join (yup, just like in a totalitarian state). She has a very funny sense of humour and often sees things that other people don't. The only trouble with her is that she's not posting as much as she used to. She distills her pearls with parcimony.

See you on the boards!

Jaykob  30 Jun 2003
Heh, normally when I start at a new forum I have tons to say. I feel like my views and opinions are most pertinent. This is the first time at a forum that I feel I have more to learn from just reading threads. I really don't have much to say yet, but I'm reading a lot of other people's questions and the responses they get and am learning a lot. I'll probably be quiet for a while.

can, under certain circumstances, lead to repression.

Name-calling: I haven't seen much of it here. Direct attacks, I have, on occasion, had the opportunity to witness.

Inflammed reactions to nothing, on the other hand, are pretty common. To the point I have, for most part, given it up on expressing my oppinion as is. Sometimes I look at a subject on the board, think of giving my oppinion, but then I remember past occasions in which the sole expression of an idea gave me so much crap to deal with.

"Leave it at that" sometimes is a way to keep peace. Not the best, but certainly one.

Alex.

I'm very very new around here, but I had lurked for a short time. I noticed that everyone seemed kind and open to varying opinions and whatnot, and that's why I joined. It is very rare to stumble upon a forum where people get along. Often times, pettiness hovers and puts a dark cloud over things. I, too, am glad to have found this place.

(((Group hug!!!))) I love Aeclectic!
Welcome, Jaykob. ;)

Alex  06 Jul 2003
I'm sure it is a great forum. But there is something about people who believe that, in order to grow a nice garden, "weeds need to be removed…" and I sometimes wonder ...

What is the paramerer? What is weed, what is not, what is crap, what is truth? What is nice, what is not?

Who is right, who is wrong? What is peace, what is getting along? What is worthy saying, what is worthy shutting up other people about?

Is it worthy after all?

Alex.
