While listening to my Sting CD I happened upon an interesting reference to the Tarot i thought a few of you might find amusing...
I marked the immediate references to Tarot with an asterisk.
A Thousand Years
A thousand years, a thousand more,
A thousand times a million doors to eternity
I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times
An endless turning stairway climbs
To a tower of souls
If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face
A million roads, a million fears
A million suns, ten million years of uncertainty
I could speak a million lies, a million songs,
A million rights, a million wrongs in this balance of time
But if there was a single truth, a single light
A single thought, a singular touch of grace
Then following this single point , this single flame,
The single haunted memory of your face
I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head
*I may be numberless, I may be innocent
*I may know many things, I may be ignorant
*Or I could ride with kings and conquer many lands
*Or win this world at cards and let it slip my hands
I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times
*Reborn as fortune's child to judge another's crimes
*Or wear this pilgrim's cloak, or be a common thief
I've kept this single faith, I have but one belief
I still love you
I still want you
A thousand times the mysteries unfold themselves
Like galaxies in my head
On and on the mysteries unwind themselves
Eternities still unsaid
'Til you love me
"I may be numberless, I may be innocent,/ I may know many things, I may be ignorant"= These two lines both seem to point to the fool.
"Or i could ride with kings, and conquer many lands" = A reference to kings ties in with several cards in the deck, including the Emperor.
"Or I could win this world at cards, and let it slip my hands" = A reference to the world card, the hanged man, and the Tarot in general.
"Reborn as fortune's child, to judge another's crimes" = another reference to the wheel, and to judgement. Note that justice in the r/w comes after the wheel of fortune, thus making justice the "child of fortune". Hmmm....
"Or wear this pilgrim's cloak, or be a common theif"= Sounds like our old friend The Magician to me... sometimes a sage, sometimes a scoundrel... the pilgrim's cloak reference also seems to point to The Hermit as well.
"I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times" = This line i am not sure of... if these lines point to any cards at all, it would seem they point to The Tower and perhaps Death.

hmm... I had a thought. What if we could constuct a poem or something according to Sting's structure...
Line 1: 6 beats, 6 beats (A)
Line 2: 6 beats, 6 beats (A)
Line 3: 6 beats, 6 beats, (B)
Line 4: 6 beats, 6 beats, (B)
Line 5: 6 beats, 6 beats, (C)
Line 6: 6 beats, 6 beats, (C)
and so on... we could all take turns making lines. =]
thoughts?
