I would like some feedback on the card facts everyone knows, for example:
The 9 of Cups = Wish Card
The 9 Swords= Nightmare card
Are there other well-known meanings for specific cards you can share?
An old tarot reader friend says the 5 of Pentacles= is the mistress card, and the 5 of Swords = Escape from Danger.
Thanks,
Elle

I see the 9 of Swords as more of a stress card, where the mind won't shut down even to let you sleep, rather than as a nightmare card. It's always indicated ultra heavy loads of stress when I get it in a reading.

One of the groups I belong(ed) to had a saying - "Tradition means we've done it that way once already."
Watch out for "what everybody knows" - it's apt to bite you.

Ok, I'll play :-).....
The three of swords seems to be the heartbreak card. In one way or another.
I know, I know - there are lots of nuances and meanings to every card. But there are some cards that just seem to have a one or two word phrase that will just jump right out at you. More so than others.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Tarot, the King of Wands is known as "the country gentlemen," would we call him the "king of the rednecks" or "king of the ockers," I wonder?

Knight of Pentacles is 'Mr. Boyscout' or 'Mr. Reliable'.
Hmm, someone on another thread said the High Priestess was "I know something you don't know".

elle , and others , i dont mean to be irreverant but i am in a kind of silly mood. Now as far as what Astra was saying , of course she is absolutely right, but as long as you stay flexible i dont see the harm in putting a word or two on a card, especially at first it helps you remember and gives you confindence when doing readings in front of others.

Personally I like to make decisions on my own
I appreciate advice and different points of view on what is right and what is wrong but ultimately I like to weigh the different options and decide by myself what I will go with...
So I would like to know the "traditional card facts" in order to think whether or not I will agree with them. And I would like to know the "traditional card facts" in order to be able to support my stand if the day comes when I decide that I disagree with this "traditional card meanings".
So, honestly, I would like to know about them. All in all, we will ALWAYS BE STUDENTS , therefore we should welcome knowledge from every area, just in order to be informed, and we should SHARE information from every area because we never know in what way it can be helpful to someone else....
(as long as it doesn't involve instructions on building weapons of mass destruction of course :-p )
honestly, my bottom line is the following: every couple of weeks or so someone comes into the forum asking questions similar to this one and always receives similar answers in the line of "you should not trust those traditional/ stereotypical (choose your word) interpretations of the card..."
My deepest congratulations to you if after analizing the conventional and definition meanings of the cards you have realised that it is better to trust your instincts... I think it's great that you've had the chance to judge and think about it on your own..
But personally I haven't had a chance to do so, and I don't have the means around me (books, people, etc...) to learn what this interpretations are, thus be able to study them and make up my mind about my OWN stand on them
Furthermore I don't like to feel like it's wrong or silly to try to know about them
It would be very helpful on doing so that everyone who is at odds with this "traditional meanings" would supply some of this "traditional meanings" and make their critical case of why they agree or not with them...
Personally I think THAT would be more productive for everyone in order to learn.
And I do apologize since this thread is not there yet and it is not my intention to upset or stress anyone
But sometimes I do get annoyed about the fact that from a growing forum with "Members: 2,586, Threads: 15,011, Posts: 161,867" sometimes you get such reluctance
my view...
