Scapini Deck - Queen of Wand's Babies

What's with the two babies on either side of the Queen of Wand's throne? One is black and one is white. They are so cute, sleeping peacefully on the floor. They are not even afraid (well their eyes are closed) of the lion rug with the scary face.

I almost missed them, getting caught up in the symbolism of the fiery hair, etc. of the Queen...

Warmest,

he also has two babies being nursed in the queen of pentacles...i think it is on the coin .....the queen of wands is a really great queen eh? i always liked the scapini court cards...the lion is only a skin and if you look at her she is wiggling her bare toes in the fur, the tabby cat curled in her lap is the same tone as the lion . Obviously she can tame ferocious beasts with her charms. the babes asleep in wicker baskets behind the throne but in front of the sunflower field in my mind symbolize her fertility and mothering nature. she is the woman that adopts the neighbors kids...i like the king of wands too , he is very wild and wooly

Hey Catti, I almost missed her wiggling toes! And her cat! All the oranges and reds almost blend together.

Thanks for the heads up about the other babies on the Pentacles card. Funny, I never was attracted to real babies!

Warmest,

Elle

hi elle,
this card has a lot going on also, there are the coins she tosses up in the air, and all that stuff at her feet and then is that supposed to be Romulus and Remus or what ??

The Litttle White Book, which I managed to save and not burn as Umbrae has suggested, describes the "dish of boiled oxhead" and a "red cushion embroidered with an effigy of the Kabbalistic demon Lucifuge Roscocale".

Go figure...

Warmest,

The Scapini deck often illustrates Etteilla Deck card meanings. I wonder if in this case the Queen of Wand's babies have anything to do with the Etteilla meaning for the upright Queen of Wands (Batons) -- Countrywoman.

The LWB describes the Queen of Wands: "...gazes amiably from her country armchair".

Yes; I would say she is considered a "countrywoman".

Warmest,

i am not a huge fan of the LWB either but in the case of the Scapini deck it gives alot of details that the artist was thinking about. I promptly lost mine, and it may be one of the reasons i had a hard time with the pips in this deck.

Do all US games LWB say the same thing after the description? I just got a Cat people deck in a trade and the LWB will give obviously an artists take on what she painted, then give the standard LWB interretation and the seem to have nothing in common.

Not all LWBs are the same. I've seen a couple I've kept for many years. Their information was THAT helpful. Then there's the other kind.

My wife's favorite deck, the Scapini Deck. I'll give you a hint: start looking for esoteric works about John the Baptist, even if it carries you into France and to Rennes les Chateux. This deck literally comes alive when you understand some of the "hidden meanings."

There is still a religion to this day that worships John the Baptist. It's called Manichaenism.

Good Luck !! And Blessed Be !!

I'll try to copy the booklet for you.

This can be a hard deck to figure out even when he writes as plain as day. I almost swapped this deck out, but it slipped away and I ended up buying a new Medieval to complete an exchange.

Then this deck and my missing Vision Quest cards showed up again as I cleared out more--so I kept it and found to my surprise that it works for me now. There's still odd distortions, but I realize that the card format of the Medieval isn't as large as a comparable deck that he did, published by Dal Negro of Italy.

I've been thinking of comparing the Medieval and Scapini's Romeo and Juliet (large version by Dal Negro), as sometimes in the Romeo and Juliet, he makes a small reference to his Scapini designs. The designs aren't that alike if one goes card by card in my humble opinion. I do see that the similar coloring format that he uses for the majors and minors for the Romeo and Juliet and Medieval has given one reviewer the impression both decks are the same.

There's a book coming out (?)...I don't know if this was just a hoped for rumor...Scapini is listed as an artist and historian in his decks and I'm glad that I kept his Medieval...had to grow into it.

Sorry if this off topic, I've been discovering Scapini links and resources lately.
