or do you ask them to give you their personal data like name, address etc?
I was inspired by another thread to ask you this question.
I usually do not ask the names of my querents. Some of them tell me, others don't.

Most of the people I've read for, I've already known, but I don't think names are particularly important so if a querent doesn't want to give me his or her name that's fine. What I like in these instances is an alias, like a screen name, which the person feels is applicable to them. This can say far more about them. For example, the name Susan may not tell you a lot about the person, but their chosen name, eg. Angeleyes, can tell you a lot about who they really are. xxx

I am more interested in birth data and any other information the querent wants to give me. The name really isn't important to me unless they want me to analyze their name using cards.

the only thing I want to know is the day and month of birth.

The only thing I want to know is why they came to me and what they expect to gain from my reading.
Then I read for them in reality.

If I am reading for the querent person-to-person I prefer to know they're name, simply because it's polite and if I peak to them I can mae the reading more personal. Most of the time I get the name by saying,
"Hi, I'm Kim," and shaking their hand. Nearly always they'll shake my hand and reply with their name. If they don't I ask!
As for online/absent readings, I don't really need any name, birthdate, etc. But I prefer to know a name or a username, just so I can think about that name whilst shuffling the cards. (Focuses my mind on the reading for that particular person.)

Just like Kiama, I like to start off each reading by telling people my name and more often than not, they will give me thiers.
It's just a nice polite thing to do, and it instantly sets people at ease...especially when I ask right after if they have ever had a reading before, and I tell them that I want to make this process as "least mysterious as possible" and that they can ask me questions at any time.
I don't usually ask for date of birth, but if the client is into astrology, they will usually tell me themselves, or it will come up in the reading itself, if it happens to be an important point!

For the last couple readings I did on the Aeclectic reading forum (which is now already a few months ago), I've asked for gender and approximate age to be provided to me off-list. It wasn't for astrological reasons, but rather it helped me to focus a bit and for me, to away some of the isolation of the electronic context. It brought some of the information I'd have in a face-to-face reading, although obviously you can get even more information in the case of face-to-face querents, by just seeing them in person.
For focussing, it also helps to ask the querent for some background and context leading up to the question.

Yep, like Kiama and Chronata, I like to introduce myself, and usually people give their name too. I don't really need it, it's just nice and helps put people more at ease.
I do get a lot just from looking at them - gender, general appearance (working class, very poor, middle class, upper class), sometimes I can tell if they are gay or straight, and other subtle clues from body language and mannerisms. That is why I only do readings in person, unless it is for someone I already know very well.
I used to just do the reading "dry," meaning they didn't tell me the question or anything, in a way to "prove" that the cards work, and I'm not just telling them what I think they want to hear.
But I am beginning to re-think that, and may begin prompting people to tell me what they want the reading for. It helps me focus in, and give greater clarity to the reading.

It's a good question, it made me think.
generally I prefer to know the name it makes asking the cards the questions easier, due to it making it more personal and so adding to the. I don't know the word but i'll say power but it's not like that, well i'm sure you understand.
