Waiite and Crowley

Hi everyone

As part of my last year at university, I have to write a dissertation/thesis and I have chosen to work with the tarot as part of this piece of work. the question that I have chosen is -

The Advancement of the Tarot System: A comparison of the influence of Arthur Edward Waite and Aleister Crowley and their influence on modern Tarot.

The piece will start with explaining the history and theories of the tarots origin, will speak about tarot today and go on to introduce the Golden Dawn.
It is after that that I will talk about Crowley and Waite and their influences on what we think about the tarot today.

I have been reading through some of Crowleys biographies for legible information about the Golden Dawn and also about their relationship but a lot of it is hard to understand. Does anyone have any good websites or pages that go into detail about the society in a simple manner?

Also. if anybody has any information or views that they may thing might be useful for my work it would be VERY much appreciated. I will probably post a poll here soon relating to this subject..

Thanks for listening

There are a number of books which specifically deal with the history of the Golden Dawn, including one I haven't read yet by Mary Greer on the women of the GD.

I could dig up some of my books for reference, but strongly suggest you first have a look at Dummett & Decker A History of the Occult Tarot: 1870 - 1970 - or at least its relevant chapters. I think they make certain mistakes (but I would have to look through the book again as to which).

If you really need to get into that specific area in detail, then contacting the librarian of the SRIA (London College) would be, I would suggest, essential.

The book that I have is a great introduction to the Golden Dawn members and quite factual, including letters between members and initiation rites and rituals.

"Revelations of the Golden Dawn. The Rise and Fall of a Magical Order" By RA Gilbert Published by Quantam.

When you are unearthing information on such a highly prolific, secret and influential "coven" such as The Golden Dawn you will surely find information in surprising places!

RA Gilbert has published other books on the Golden Dawn.

Happy researching, please let me know on any interesting info/books/websites found, would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Many blessings for your research and thesis, would be very interested to read it when finished!

I... I'm confused... I thought that the Golden Dawn was a Tarot deck...? Was it also some sort of organization?

Scheherazade Golden Dawn is a tarot deck but more importantly it was an organization in England that explored the occult.

Oh and don't forget they practised in Scotland too! Edinburgh, in fact, and it was only recently that the room was re-opened that they practice in. Maybe the year 2000?
