Children

Do you think children should look & be asked their opinion of a card? Do you think this is too creative for their minds?

I sometimes think it would be good for their imagination & not to start it until they ask & then when they want.

It's never too young for children to look at pictures and make up stories about them. If you think about it, that's what a lot of childhood revolves around - playing Cowboys and Indians in the garden, Barbies, picture books - it's all about taking something and extending your imagination into it. Children would probably have an excellent approach to tarot cards, not necessarily the way readers use them, but in terms of understanding the images.

I think if you feel a child is intuitive enough to be interested in the cards, go for it and ask them their opinions. Children can be very curious and surprisingly bright. I think it is a very good idea to introduce children to the Tarot at a young age, as this is when spiritual abilities are at their peak. You might be surprised at what they tell you, they may see things that you didn't see when you first looked at the cards at an older age. I myself am going to make a point to try it :D

My daughter is 12 now and has had Tarot and divination cards of her own for the past year. She started with fairy cards and I was amazed at how she could make up stories about them. She did exactly what we're all supposed to do without anyone telling her. She looked at the picture and then decided what the card meant. Her first pack had 48 cards in and to this day she can remember her meanings for all of them. She has Tarot of a Moon Garden and the Herbal also. I find that she notices things in cards that I didn't - she has a very sharp eye and amazing memory.

There was an interesting thread awhile back that is relevant to this issue: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16410&highlight=lost+dreams

Here's another link to a thread about this in the past that you may find helpful:

Personally, I think Tarot for children is just the same as making up stories for picture books, and I wouldn't hesitate to introduce my future children to it. It is obvious that children are extremely intuitive and imaginative, so what better way to keep their imagination and intuition alive into adulthood that Tarot?

PS- I started studying Tarot at 9 years old, and I don't think it did me any harm... I don't think.... *eek* ;)

Nine years old? You are so lucky to have been introduced to tarot at such an early age. I'm sure I would be a better reader if I'd discovered tarot earlier in life (I discovered it at 19, only 6 months ago).

my kids love cards, they have their own card games they play (old maid, and some playing cards, as well as memory). So when I pull out my tarot in front of them, they come running up wondering what I"m doing. They've known me to pull daily cards before, and they want to pull one too. In the past, I've asked them what they think about what they see in the card. I usually use faery oracle decks, and they really like the images on the cards, the faeries. My oldes child is 3 yrs old, and I don't think her to be too young at all to give me her opinion. She's been educating me on Atlantis, so why not a card? In any case, I find no harm in it, and it's fun for them. If the child shows an interest then by all means, teach them, but if their not interested, then don't push it on them (as I don't think any here would).

Hope this helped.

That is so cute Moonbow! It illustrates my point about children being so receptive and intelligent when it comes to intuitive things. Oh how I wish I had been introduced to Tarot at that age, or younger...seems not that long ago :)

My kids are now 13, 11 & 7. My first deck was aquired the year between the birth of the first & the seconed. I have never hidden my cards from them for anything other than them getting into them and drawing on them or something. The are so curious about the cards. My 11 yr. old had a deep enough interest that I gave him a deck. I think the open minds that children have is quite an advantage to learning tarot.

My 6-year-old daughter loves to look at the images of the Tarot cards. She likes the RWS-deck and her favorite cards are the 10 of Cups (she especially loves the rainbow), the 6 of Cups and (strangely) the Devil (she calls it "Krampus"). Also the Magician - she even painted a picture of this card.

But I don't let her play with my cards. She usually sees the cards when I discuss a new spread with my friend and she's around too. Then she also wants to pick a card or just find her favorite cards.

Also her little friends love to look at the cards images when they'r around.

When my daughter was younger I let her play with a Tarot deck I didn't use as a Tarot deck. A deck with no images on the Minor Arcana cards. She loved to make different piles (Cups, Swords,...etc.) and than I told her to find for example the 10 of Disks.

Well... Now I am starting to think that maybe this is a good time to introduce them to my grandaughter ( she is "almost 4" and very perceptive).

I think it will be very interesting to see what her take is on the images.
