Hmm ... let's see ....
... for example ... (not autobiographical, necessarily)

(1) "I was looking for the One."

(2) "I was looking for a deck without a scary Death card, scary 10 of Swords, etc."

(2A) "I was looking for a scary deck."

(3) "The deck that spoke to me."

(4) "It was on sale."

(5) "I already had all the other decks that the store had."

(6) "Someone raved about this deck on the Aeclectic Tarot forums."

(7) "Someone was starting a study group about this deck on the Aeclectic Tarot forums."

(8) "It's an out of print deck, and behold, it was in the store in the clearance rack."

(9) "I wanted to have a deck with a theme/orientation that I don't already have one for."

(10) "I wanted to buy a deck along the same theme/orientation as other deck(s) I enjoy."

(11) "I wanted to test out how ebay works."

i collect decks that i find artistically beautiful which fits the bill for ____ deck

i got it in a trade.

i found it at amazon(or tarot garden or ____) and felt driven to buy it.

the artist/creator of the deck is a member of aeclectic and i had to have a copy to demonstrate my loyalty(and s/he promised me a signed copy)

i was curious about the deck

buying new decks gives me a rush

everybody at AT has it but me!

Logiatrix  10 Nov 2003
(12) I was having withdrawals.

(13) The box was pretty.

(14) I needed cheering up.

(15) I got it for So-and-so, but decided to keep it and get him a Chia Pet. He's not really into tarot, anyway.

(16) I wanted to celebrate my neighbor's aunt's husband's step-sister's favorite high school teacher's retirement. ...Or whatever else there is to celebrate.

(17) I needed that one to cover that letter of the alphabet on my Tarot Collection List.

(18) The box was ugly.

:)

EDIT:
(19) Rusty Neon (and truthsayer, and so on...) gave me a huge list of excuses for buying it. Pick one!
:D

1) For a history bent

2) art project

3) writing project

4) to teach me something

1, I hadn't heard of this deck before so ordered it out of curiosity

2, I had an empty space in my bookshelf for another deck

3, I needed cheering up

4, I wandered into the small empty bookshop, the assistant was so nice I had to buy something.

5, I wanted to try a particular deck out before I bought it for my friend. :)

Majecot  11 Nov 2003
1) I was looking for the right deck.

2) I was impluse shopping.

3) I wanted to buy them for a gift.

4) I wanted the same deck as someone else had to compare notes.

5) My brother made me do it.

6) I saw them on line and they were calling my name.

7) I thought they were pretty.

8) I bought them cuz EVERYBODY on AT had them. :)

9) I am a shopaholic.

10) Because I needed too :D

and so on , and so on ......

er - well all those apply to me I think :-)

and...

I bought it because I knew I could trade it with someone looking for it, who had a deck I wanted (okay, this is a very round-about reason - but honestly, it's why I have bought two decks)

oh, confessions, confessions - when it comes down to it, any excuse will do!

lol, right!
1. The Tarot of Oz because I loved the Oz books as a child.
2. Because it featured art that I loved.
3. Because I thought that I should learn that deck... Marseille, Thoth.
4. Because I really just wanted a new deck and it looked good.
5. Because it was the only deck offered in a trade.

firestorm  11 Nov 2003
The art and/or colors attracted me.

I wanted to explore a different perspective of tarot.

I wanted to see what all the "fuss" was about. ;-)

I've gone a whole month without a new deck and they're calling me.

My wish list needs trimming.

The thrill of actually finding an OOP deck and knowing that I may never see it again. ;-)

The realization that I'm just a Tarot junkie!!

Requiella  11 Nov 2003
1 -- It matched one of my current interests.

2 -- It cheered me up!

3 -- My cat had to have it...

4 -- ...and then the other two got jealous, so...

1. The artwork attracted me

2. "This has got to be the one!"....(that I've been searching for all these years....

3. The deck speaks to me (literally) when I look at it's cards on AT.

4. I read a review on some site of how the reviewer was able to give amazing, near psychic readings with the deck. Then I get the deck home and find I have no rapport with it. (Thank goodness, I 've stopped doing this one.)

5. If the pips are super-illustrated and I think it looks easy to read with.

6. I think it will be my "intuitive deck".

VGimlet  11 Nov 2003
All of the above,

(plus add "and the dogs and everyone else got mad 'cause the cats all got one" onto Requillla's post about the cats....")

and had to get that deck for Ken, because there might be race cars/nude women on some of the cards.

Needed an example of that type of deck for my collection.

Mystic Zyl  13 Nov 2003
It was cheap!

Liked the box.

Empty space in my display case. How can I look like a collector with only 80 decks?

My boyfriend said I could not buy it!!!!!!!

Tallarico  13 Nov 2003
Addiction...

Gerbear  13 Nov 2003
Because;

1. I had all the other decks by a particular artist except THIS one,

2. I want to support independent artists,

3. I don't have a deck in this language (not that I can read it anyway)

4. I have extra, empty bags,

5. I've never seen this deck offered on ebay before,

6. I need one more to reach 100,200,...(fill in number of your choice)

:) Wow ... One hundred thousand two hundred decks, that's a lot, even for some of the zealous collectors that inhabit this space.

Indeed! If there were that many decks, I might slow down a bit! lol.

Yes, the Starlot I got from you was in Japanese, but I already had six others in Japanese, so I was trying to make it an even dozen. lol.

Rusty Neon  13 Nov 2003
Don't you think that a Thoth deck in Klingon would be wonderful?

Gerbear  13 Nov 2003
Perhaps the Klingon Language Institue http://www.kli.org/
would be interested in participating in a Klingon Thoth
