Shalom All,
Who is it that helps/assists/guides you during your readings and do you call on anyone in particular for help?
For me, it's my angels. I have a couple spirit guides (a deceased grandmother and a deceased dog from my childhood), but they help me more with day to day type issues (work or social related issues). For instance one set of my grandparents that crossed over helped me get the job I was just hired for.
I love asking my questions to my angels or to the querent’s angels. It works well for me.

I usually refer to my divinitory helpers as "the spirits".

I address my Inner Teachers when I do my prayer work before a reading.
Most often, I use a short phrase while praying that goes something like, "Please help me to hear the messages my Teachers know I most need to hear during this reading."
If I'm reading for another, I say, "Please help their Teachers to communicate to me so I might pass along the messages that he/she most needs to hear."
I believe we each have several Teachers who are with us in this life, but it's up to *us* to contact them (through prayer). They rarely, if ever, contact us first is my experience.

I sit quietly and ask for guidance. I also try to focus on the Querent for at least a minute, sometimes longer so that I feel connected with them.
With readings here, it might simply be holding the image of the written question in mind. This simply dissolves into a sense of the person and I can begin the reading. I often call the sense of the Querent to mind during a reading.
Umbrae gave me a useful hint once, and I use this quite often too. I imagine that the Querent is in the room with me, and I take her by the hand for just a moment to bring her into consciousness as the most important person in the world right now. :) That works really well.
The guidance I'd seek is from my personal sense of God.

I like that...... such a simple, sweet picture.... the hands are so sensitive and this is a lovely way to connect with the Querent.....
Jen, I don't know who they are, specifically, but I feel the presence of beings.... I call them Angels and Guides... they are very loving and very funny..... :D

Spirit Guides, Spirit Helpers, Guardian Angels, I find it helped me when I named them and it made it all the more personal, like having really special friends.
My guardian angel I named 'Rapheal' and i have a guide who gave this name to himself which is 'brother', how very sweet!
Skytwig, I am interested in the quote posted, do you mean you physically hold the clients' hand or just in your minds eye?

I ask Thoth to guide me, and I pray that what I read will help the person asking. That the message I get is a message that they can receive.

I like that Marion. It's true that sometimes we can bring forth messages the querent isn't ready to recognize or hear. So these messages just go in one ear and out the other. I think I'll formulate a prayer for this as well. Thanks :)

(Hi Jen!)
I just recently started doing this and it seems to help a lot. I say a short prayer and ask the Lord and Lady to lend me their strength so I can be open to the wisdom that I need to be shown (or that the querent needs to be shown.) I also ask that the reading be for the good of all. It's kind of a karmic wrapping of the reading so it's not open to any baneful influences and so the information given isn't going to affect anyone negatively in a karmic sense.

Why work through others, when you can go direct ???? I have the confidence to speak directly to my Father, as I respect and love Him. I feel it is an insult not to seek Him. I am a very successful and accurate reader, well known in my part of the country. Why would I change the way I do readings and ask for any outside assistance? I am a Christian, please do not judge me, as I will not judge you. There is only One that can judge or only One that will judge me.
This is a forum for sharing ideas and beliefs. I hope it is not one to tear apart value systems. Everyones spirituality is as individualistic as their own fingerprints.
This is a very sensitive subject for me; if you have not guessed.

As I have and did and do respect you and others' right, will be more thinking from now on.
I was asking you that with humor, hence the smiley face I had with it.

I've only done reading for friends so far and I try to give the
benefit of my intuition, which ususally comes directly from my
Spirit Guide.
Sometimes I'll look at a particular card and the position it's in and
I'll get a sudden flash of intuition and it's usually right on target.
If the person doesn't get it, I tell them to let it rest in their hearts for a while and it will come to them. They have often come back the next day very surprised and happy that they finally "get it".
I've been told that my reading are so accurate as to be scary !!
I just "calls 'em likes I sees 'em !!!" and leave the rest to the
Powers that Be !!!!!
I'm so glad I've joined the Tarot family, it's really an awesome experience to be on either end of a decent reading !!!!

I find it pretty interesting that you're Christian and into tarot, Mystic Zyl. I don't think I've ever met anyone like that, I'm impressed. It seems like a good way to communicate with God, though, but I'm not particularly religious so this is just speculation... I wonder why such a great number of Christians around here dissapprove of the practice? It doesn't seem to violate any aspect of the religion that I can think of...
Anyway, I actually don't have any guide for the tarot at the present moment. I just meditate for a bit to detach myself from the mundane aspects of my life, and then lay out the cards. They always seem to be accurate and helpful... *shrug* But I'm hoping one day I'll come in contact with whoever's orchestrating the results of my readings.

Aerten, I am a Spiritualist Christian, based on ancient Christian Gnostic beliefs, this is a longtime established church all over the world. Yes, I thought I would never find a Christian church that believed in the gifts of healing, psychic ability and communication in the beyond. Astrology, the power of crystals and most anything occurring in nature (made by God) is to be studied for certain properties.
Most Christians will say, we are Wiccans, which we are not. We read the King James Bible and believe that salvation lays with Jesus Christ.
I say just let your intuition work for you. Who says you have to have a guide? God created your mind and your third eye for psychic gfts.
Hmmm I better go, I think the other Christians are building a fire outside my home!

Mystic Zyl (is it pronounced zeal or zial?)
I have spent a few days pondering what you said and as said before I respect your beliefs and rights.
But I suppose in a place such as aeclectic, we will come across many different views, beliefs and opinions. Isn't that why we are here to share these?
I believe that my spirit guides/angels and the Creator (God) is whom I work with when I am reading and the question posed is:
Who helps you with a Reading? (Angels, Spirit Guides etc.)
We all have the right to our beliefs and I hope that you respect mine?

A clairvoyant friend of mine once told me to ask my angels to come around me, so that's what I do. I sometimes honour the oracle of the cards and ask guidance to see the message clearly for the benefit of all or I ask the goddess's guidance and sometimes I ask my deceased father. I still feel self-conscious doing this. Do I believe in what I'm doing? It doesn't require my belief. I'm demonstrating respect for the process and using it to focus. Something I read I think is also important for all of us no matter whose help we're invoking, and I always forget to do it. When you're done....remember to say thank you!

A number of Aeclectic members here and in other threads have referred to the idea of Angels and Spirit Guides and there is plenty in various books on them. I am not consciously aware of any such beings in my life. I have intuitions and instincts which I believe come from inside or from God but I've never given a personality or name to them as if they were "entities", other than "God".
How do you know or recognize a Spirit Guide or an Angel speaking to you?

Hi augursWell,
You ask a good question. I believe there are a myriad of ways to feel or be conscious of other beings that exist at different vibrational frequencies or dimensions.
Everyone has different experiences. Some of mine fall under the categories of clairvoyance (clear seeing), claircognizance (instant knowing) and clairaudience (clear hearing).
I've seen my angels before in my minds eye, but most often I hear them speaking to me. I've also had the "knowing" or intuition that they were with me.
I've learned more about them through working with a women that works as a full body channel for her querent’s angels.
It's my perception/belief/understanding that everyone has angels. So if you're interested in learning to sense them, you can ask that all of your angels surround you and give you signs that they are around you. You can also do this with spirit guides or probably any energy.
I experience my spirit guides the same way - through clairvoyance and clairaudience. This isn't a constant occurrence for me, usually about once a month.
In response to some of the other posts on this thread - I've always felt that everything and everyone is God - literally. :)

Jen,
Thanks for the quick intro on how you experience this. I do find myself sometimes thinking about loved ones, such as my grandmother, and experiences and events that are reminiscent of them which come up in daily life. In that situation I can attach a name and face to them quite easily. I do sometimes wonder if it's her, or just my memories of her, at work.
I know in Kaballah that there are ideas of souls, and an attendent Angel, for many different levels of existence. I guess I'm stuck in that "If I don't see/hear it for myself then I can't believe it" frame of mind. :(

As this thread caught my eye, I was thinking of a meditative class I attended once.
The gentleman--Hank Wesselman--had a relaxation meditation where he explained that he pictured a retreat place such as a beautiful sanctuary garden. When he need to relax muscles and ease tension, he mentally walked into a temple and in one area, I seem to remember he had a kindly "Japanese massage" personage--I pictured a tiny old woman with a kindly wrinkled face and incredibly strong, kneading, hands. He said it might only take him five minutes, but this mental break and greeting/meeting worked wonders in tense times.
I think this is something I'd like to do more myself. And picturing myself in conversation with a helping mentor would be nice...and it would help my focus to gain greater insight or inspiration. Naming or picturing someone could strengthen the visualization for me.
I realize that for myself, many times it goes better to face a tough project if I picture myself at the conclusion, maybe just finished or speaking to someone about being done.

augursWell,
I know what you mean. I'm still like that at times and I often doubt what I see or hear, but then it's usually reinforced over and over and that's how I know it's not just my imagination.
If you were wanting to change your mindset, you could try repeating "When I believe it, I'll see it". :)

I have finally found the time to read through this thread - each time I passed it by, being a difficult question, I could see it growing in response, and each time wanting to read it through with the due effort required.
augursWell mentions that 'If I don't see/hear it for myself then I can't believe it'. Yet, can one hear or see the air? can one see or hear light? can one see or hear electricity? can one see or hear Neptune, Uranus, Pluto, Ceres, etc? can one see or hear the sphericity of the Earth? of the Earth's orbit around the Sun?
For each and every of these questions, one may reply that one can see their effects, and thus come to knowledge of them.
Maybe, just maybe, it is similarly so with regards to much of the spiritual realm - whether it be God, Angelic, or other spiritual beings.
Perhaps, too, it is also allowing oneself to penetrate beyond the veil of materiality and sense into the forces at work behind the scene.
Perhaps, too, it is a combination of these things.

I've never really thought about what I did before a reading until I read this post. I was going to say that I don't ask for anyone's help, but with further thought I realized that I do. I guess it's more of a natural instinct for me to do it than a ritual. I concentrate on the person getting the reading and as I shuffle ask God to allow me to help them with the reading. I believe that the higher powers we all seek for guidance are the same, only by different names.

I should say that I have had a number of "spiritual" experiences of various kinds. I am not approaching this from a "there is no such thing" point of view. jmd's point is quite valid, there are things that do exist even though we may have no direct "proof" of them. Through their effects one can gain knowledge of them but I for one will always look for validation before I put my trust in them.
I myself have simply never directly interacted with an Angel, Spirit Guide, or other entity in a way that I can say, yes, that is an Angel or a Spirit Guide. Perhaps it is just a personality thing, the way in which each of us relate to things beyond typical, rational thought.
As Jen said in her post, she had other things come along which validated the messages that she received.
But it would be really nice if they just appeared, came out and said directly "Hello, my name is Gabriel, I'm an Angel, Nice to meet you." and then made a tree turn purple just to prove it. :D
