Yes/No questions!

Hello!
I'm totally new and I'm so happy to be here :o). This is my post #1. English isn't my native language so sorry for any mistakes.

I've been reading cards for almost 3 years now. I was told that you can ask yes/no questions by choosing 3 cards and by their position you can answer any yes/no question.

e.g.
-3 cards in normal position - yes
-2 cards in normal position, 1 reversed-yes but...
-2 cards reversed - no but...
3 cards reversed - no

The problem is that it doesn't really work for me. Has anyone tried this or is it just something we do in my country?
Thank you for any reply and I'm really glad to be here :o)

Dzien dobry, Agathe! And welcome to Aeclectic!

I think that for Yes/No questions, the best thing is to work out your own system. I have tried out quite a number of "methods", but now I use only the Majors, and choosing only one card (and just read the message "intuitively"), or else I will use the traditional "Past, Present, and Future" spread and I read the three cards as a whole (often I also only use the Majors for this.)

I suggest you practice to find which system works for you. Do spreads that are easy to verify, like "will the dentist find a hole in my tooth" when you have an appointment, that kind of thing.

Let us know please if you find a method that works for you!

Thank you so much Diana. For some reason I knew you would write back. Intuition :o). I will definitely let you know when I find any way that will work with these kinds of questions. I'll try yours as well :o).

Hello Agathe, and welcome to Aeclectic!

The method I use now to get yes/no answers is to simply pull around 3 cards and interpret them as I would normally. As you know, an interpretation will either be 'favourable' or 'unfavourable'. In the case of, for instance, the question 'Will I have fun at the pub tonight?' and if I pull these three cards:

9 of Cups
4 of Wands
Queen of Wands

I would interpret that as I would for a normal Tarot reading: 9 of Cus suggests satisfaction and good times, the 4 of Wands suggests celebration, and teh Queen of Wands may represent me whilst I am at the pub: sociable, open, and warm.

For a reading like this, my answer would most definitely be a 'yes' to 'will I have fun down the pub tonight?'

If I asked a question 'Will I do well at University this year' and got the cards:

Tower
9 of Swords
4 of Cups

I would interpret these also in the same way: Tower suggests some sort of ruin or the 'rug being pulled out from under my feet', 9 of Swords suggests anxiety and mental anguish, and the 4 of Cups suggests boredom. My answer to 'will I do well at University this year' is 'no'.

The good thing about this method I find is that not only do I get a 'yes/no' answer, but in the individual cards I can see the reasons why it is yes, or why it is no. For instance, the reasons why I will have fun at the put tonight are that I will be open to having fun, and will feel very sociable, I will be able to relax and enjoy myself, and I will have cause for celebration. Why will I not do well at University this year? Because I'll be blowing everything out of all proportion and worrying myself silly, whilst being bored and distracted from my course.

So that's another possible method.

Hope this helps!

I like your method, Kiama :) That's what I normally use too, although I try not to ask too many yes or no questions, as I am sometimes confused by the answer. But you described it well, it seems like I was on the right track.

I don't have much to add. I basically do the same as Kiama. I really just wanted to say that for English not being your first language, you write splendidly! :)

catti  25 Nov 2003
hi agatha :)

i use your method but in a simpler way
3 cards
upright is positive
reversed is negative
the cards explain the "why" of the answer

i try to keep it simple because a yes/no question is simple
if querent wants more explantion then we have to use different style spread with a modified question.

the key to my sucess has been forcing myself to keep simple:
example ( actual reading i did for a girlfriend)
will he call me tonight?
3 cups, 4 wands (rx) , kinght wands (rx)
no
he wants to have fun, party and really isnt thinking about commitment and relationships now.

and that is it. that is all . i refuse to say anymore and he didnt call .

Hey catti,

that sounds simple and it's sometihing what I prectice, but my cards tend to lie to me. So, I don't know if I should change a spread, read it in a different way or don't ask or answer yes/no questions.

I've once (twice) used the Tarot cards to get a simple yes/no-answer and I've always regretted doing it. I felt really stuck then. And I've never been sure if the Tarot cards really "told" me the future outcome or if I created this outcome myself by self-fulfilling prophecy.

agathe,
maybe avoiding the yes/no questions for a while ....and then one day the spread/method/answer will come to you!

like when you know the word you want to use but just cant quite remember it at the moment...so you have to go back and make your sentence all different so that it makes sense....and then later , maybe that night , or maybe days later....all of a sudden, like a flash, you wake up or stop washing your dishes or whatever,
and say " AhA! I knew that!"
:)
