Im not sure if anyone has ever asked this before but here goes
I have read and been told that the celtic cross is one of the oldest tarot spreads, But if it is why are the cards places a different name every time If its old dont you think it would say the same thing time after time
Maybe someone can answer this.

Hi kelansta :)
The Celtic Cross is very old and does have a few different meanings for the positions floating around.....
Generally, however, each position has a Standard meaning that has remainded the same.
This is the way I do it:
........3................10
5......1........6........9
.........2.................8
........4..................7
1 = Question
2 = Obstruction or Challenge
3 = What is visible or what is on the surface
4 = what is hidden or what is the foundation
5 = Recent past
6 = Immediate Future
7 = House (another description of the Self)
8 = Environment (What surrounds the querent)
9 = Hopes and Fears (They tend to be same thing ;) )
10 = Outcome
#2 card is placed sideways, across #1 card.
Now this is not the same 'world wide'... it will vary, especially in the meanings for 3,4,5 and 6..... generally 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and 10 tend to be fairly universal.....
Does that info help?
PS: I use a Significator beneath the #1 card, sometimes allowing the cards to pick it for me....

the meanings of the celtic cross spread has varieties most probably as a personal choice of readers. we've always said that there is no right or wrong in using the tarot...that goes the same way with spreads...
but i wonder if anyone can really tell us the "original" position meanings of the cc
:smoker:

Likely the ones developed by the Golden Dawn for its First Order members.
