How important do you think the question is before the reading?
Sometimes people say they don't have a question, so wouldn't the cards show their thoughts subconsciously.
When people say they don't have a question I lay the cards out & read them as a story. yes or no?
Thanks for any replys.

When i am reading for me, I actually let the cards name the question for me...... Card #2 in the Celtic Cross...... often, it will help me know what is REALLY 'on my mind'.... :)

I actually rarely do readings with a question in mind. When I read for the public, I often ask if there is a question, or if I should just do a general reading.
If there are more cups, then I will focus on relationships, and if more pentacles then I will focus on the workplace. Swords, often mean I focus on health issues, and a lot of wands, I put the focus on creativity, of life goals.
This doesn't always work out exactly like I said, but it is a good starting point for me.
Clients don't always have a question right up front, but as soon as I do a general reading, the questions usually come up, or are already answered as I explain the reading.
For readings for myself, I use an Oracle deck. :D
Mostly because I usually do have a question and I find that I am not far enough removed from my own concerns to interpret the tarot for myself.

I too rarely ask a question, the cards always seem to know what the issue is anyway.
They tell me what my questions it.. I think the best readings are general ones.

I almost always use a question when reading for myself. I haven't read for many others, but I suppose if they didn't have a particular question, I would just choose a general spread that covers a lot of topics in their life and just do a general reading. I think a lot of people think that tarot is just a fortune-telling device and all they want is to test us to see how much truth we can find in the cards ;)

If I do readings for myself, I do them just because I do have a specific question in my mind. Daily cards or other forecasts also are based on a question like "what will this day / month/ year bring for me?".
But if the person for whom I am doing a reading does not have a specific question, I have the choice between two different approaches (I choose on intuition): or I'll ask for just one card which will give an indication on the subconscious question lingering and we'll go on from there, or I'll do some kind of general spread as follows (I've found it in the book about the oracle de Belline, but use it with all cards) :
____ 1 ____
2_______3
4_______5
6_______7
____8____
1.general atmosphere
2. love - present situation
3. love - how it is going to evolve on short term
4. work - present situation
5. work - how it is going to evolve on short term
6. money- present situation
7. money - how it is going to evolve on short term
8. general advice
After that, we specify and develop... and normally, the question comes up sooner or later!

And I think the spread is "adaptable" in the sense that you can adapt the different positions to your needs or to what you feel is more appropriate. That's what I often do - like everything I do - I Simone-ize it...
May I have feed-back on your results, ros?
Thanks

I also like that spread! :) And I like the idea of drawing a card to hint at the querent's subconscious question. I'll remember that.
