I find it much easier to do readings for other people than for myself.
Does anyone else find this?

tarotbrat  04 Dec 2003
i do as well find it easier to read for others than myself. i can't seem to be objective when it comes to doing a reading for myself. when i read for someone else, i don't know much about the situation that is in question, so i just read the cards just as they are laid out and give them a straight forward answer. where as reading for myself, i read to much into each and every card and then in the end doubt myself.

Majecot  04 Dec 2003
Find it difficult to read for myself. If I am doing a general reading I have no problem but if it is some pressing issue I will have my friend read for me, because sometimes I feel I may read into the cards what I want to see.

nocturnaldreamr  04 Dec 2003
i completly agree.

when i read for my self, i know my situation and so im influenced to change the reading so it fits the way i wanna see it, but when i read for others i don't know their situation, so it works better

Star Spirit  04 Dec 2003
I normally only read for myself (until I build up enough confidence to read for others). Sometimes I dislike doing this though, because I'm afraid I may give myself a biased outcome sometimes.

Simone  05 Dec 2003
Readings for myself do work out well if - and only if - I am not too involved emotionally in the situation, or if I am doing a reading for my own self-developement, or if I have no expectations as to the result (meaning I am completely open to any outcome).

The issue of expectations comes up too if I read for others: sometimes I am completely free of them and can do a very "fluent" reading without problems (and hit the point accurately) - but as soon as I feel that "I have to be good on that one" - I fail...

So for me, what I have to do is work on liberating me from my own expectations to be good and all turns out well - I hereby formally ask my three spiritual guides to help me with this - thanks in advance! :) :) :)

Within the last month, I got up the courage to read for someone else and now I'm hooked. I thought I was really tarot challenged because I've been fascinated with and studying tarot for quite a long time and it just never seemed to work for me. But I never read for anyone but myself. Once I got the courage to read for someone else, it just flowed! I really prefer reading for others now and actually have a new respect for and awe of the tarot.

Over here they say you're not supposed to read for yourself. I do it from time to time but then I'm very reluctant. Just like many of you I find it terribly difficult and most of the times, especially if they are yes/no questions tarot does not tell the truth. Once, as incredible as it sounds, it started swearing (I was given this one meaning of this one card:o)).
Oh well, I guess it can also get mad from time to time, right?

The majority of my readings are for myself and I do a handful for a couple of friends and family.

Something weird seems to happen when I try to do a reading for one of my very close friends. This is using Fortune Cards, not Tarot. She selects the cards, and I interpret them. But the cards she selects mostly seem to be about me, not her.

I'm wondering. Does anybody else find this happening to them?

Purple_scorp..it happens to me when I read my Mum's cards. Not always but very often. Then I am seriously confused because I focused on her question and everything, so logically they should be "her cards". So as you can see, you're not the only one.
Maybe it happens when a person we read cards for really cares about us. Well, good there are such people in our lives :o).

I find it less effective to read my own cards, simply because when I am reading for somebody else I have to talk out loud, explain everything to them bit by bit, and thus I come across the meaningful details. When I'm reading for myself however, I don't say the reading out loud, and instead I just look at the cards, get a quick impression of what they mean, and leave it, possibly ignoring the finer details.

To remedy this I write down readings for myself instead (I'd feel stupid talking to myself!).

I read for myself more than anyone else. This is how I first started learning, and how I continue learning. It makes a difference what I am doing readings about, as to how I do. Yes, if I am very attached to a specific outcome I will read into the cards what I want to see....however, I have tried over time to stop doing this. It takes discipline, but I am working on it. I have actually found it better not to approach the Tarot if I am expecting a certain answer. It is better not to read, unless I am willing to be open to the truth.

Well, same thing has happened to me on a few occasions, also with very close friends...

But something weirder still has happened to me lately:

I was reading cards for someone I had just met (in his absence), and then the cards turned out to be someone else, completely different, as person I still was to meet at that time - which is to say I hadn't met before. AND they were very accurate, even the astrological sign I found out was correct.

So, seems the cards sometimes have their own life!

Oh yes, to be as objective with myself in a reading as for someone I don't know, t'would be grand...

I have found over the years I have become more objective, sometimes quite harsh with myself!

It's great, a reality check...:)

Gosh, we all need those from time to time.....*gulp*....

Haven't done that many readings for others, but from what little experience I have, I find this is something of a tradeoff. While I'm not as objective in readings for myself, I find that I'm less afraid of hurting my own feelings. :)

I keep a couple of reading decks "just for me," so as to maintain a personal connection with the cards, exclusive of "outside vibrations."
It might all just be psychological, but so far, having special decks has been working for struggle-free self readings.
Be that as it may, when I want to completely guarantee a straight answer to a specific question, I prefer to back up my tarot reading with an I-Ching reading, in which case I am absolutely unable skew the outcome!

Agathe,
when you do those readings for your mum, who picks the cards, you or her? I could understand the reading being about me if I were to pick the cards for my friend, but she always picks them herself.

Kiama,
I keep a spiritual journal and write my readings down too. It is interesting to go back and re-read previous entries.

Simone,
how long after you did the reading did you meet this unmet person?

Tauni,
I like the idea of keeping a separate tarot deck for personal use. Which tarot deck have you set aside for yourself? It was an interesting point you made about consulting the I-Ching for clarification/verification. Personally as well as Tarot decks, I have a stack of other divination tools (Runes, Philosopher's Stones, Animal Stones, pendulums, Titanias Fortune Cards, Le Normand's Cards, Harry Potter Cartomancy Deck, 2 different sets of Angel Cards, various software programs, and a few others that I can't remember just at this moment.

I use various tools, depending on what I want to know, and for whom I am asking.

I have acquired all of the above, in the last three years. My Tarot decks have been the last acquisitions. In fact, there was a time when I thought Tarot was not for me. But, everything else has kind of lead me to the Tarot path. And I'm comfortable with it now.

So I'm curious to know. Do you all just stick to your Tarot decks or do you delve into other Divination tools like me.

Just slightly off topic, but related. Near the start of my journey, I read a book about Coincidences by an Australian Author. During the process of reading his book, three significant coincidences (that I'd just read about in his book) happened to me. I felt so strongly about them that I wrote to tell him. We sent a couple of emails back and forth, and I told him of my new journey. He said that many walk the spiritual path after a major event in their life. Mine was the break-up of my marriage.

Was it a major event that lead you to Tarot?

I like to read for others, but sometimes have a hard time finding the words to explain what the cards mean, how to interpret the cards so the person I'm reading for will get an understanding of what the card means (without going into great detail about the whole workings of tarot ~ you know, suits and elements, astrological correspondences, numerology, all the little bits and pieces that make up the whole). How to condense all of it into something that makes sense and apply it to the person's situation. That's what I struggle with. Whereas, if I'm reading cards for myself, I feel I know all of those subtleties, or can look them up in a book, without having to verbally express the idea. Any suggestions? I keep a journal (which started out for tarot and now just gets all kinds of things written in it). I still find verbal readings a challenge (I did an e-mail reading and it was easier).

Hi, purple_scorp,

I met this person two or three days, more or less, after the reading. Peronally, I'd like to know if there are any indications in the reading on the fact that the reading diverts to another person...

No, I use, besides my Tarot deck an Oracle deck (Belline), pendulums, sometimes (but I need lots of energy for that), my chrystal ball, and most of the time my hands and inner eyes (feeling and seeing people's energies, for example)

Simone,
I just tried to PM you (twice) but it failed for some reason, so I'm posting here. Wow. You have a crystal ball. I always wanted one.

I have a shiny piece of purple wrapping paper on my bedroom door and I am always seeing images in it (mainly faces). Sometimes I see different colours too. Is this similar to what you see when you look into your crystal ball?

purple_scorp

Simone  10 Dec 2003
purple_scorp,

I own a crystal ball. I do not know why PM-ing failed, but maybe it was to get the idea to launch a thread about crystal balls in the Divination Forum... Which I'll do immediately after this.

I'll ask for tech support about it though.

Anyhow, just to tell you that I do not see images in my crystal ball, I merely use it as a concentration medium and see/hear the infos from inside me ;) . Fact is that this method drains me of energy and I have to make sure I am really grounded and centered before proceeding :)
