This is a bit of a technical question, but how many readings can you do before your deck needs a rest?
I find personally that it really depends on the energy from the querents - if it's really good I can keep it up longer. But even then, I'll draw the line, set limits on how much I'll read, even if that means really disappointing some ppl. It's funny, but I feel like I'm draining out the deck when I read for others. It's probably a projection of myself feeling drained....
For me the sign that I've got to stop when I've shuffled very well and the deck is throwing cards from previous readings. That's the deck's way of saying to me that it's done for the night.

Hi isthmus,
I find sometimes my deck doesn't like to shuffle when it is not happy....
Generally I will sit it on my selenite or put it out in the full moon to cleanse it. I also keep a clear quartz crystal in with it.
Like you, I find some people drain my deck, but I think that's life in the reading world :)

Yes, there is a definite 'limit'..... Our Guides and Angels see to it that we don't wear ourselves out ...... the cards begin feeling like mud.
As Temperance suggested, crystals and such help..... so does smudging with sage..... ah,...... ;)

Is it the cards, or is it us, that gets worn out though?

What I believe, for myself, is that we are tired. Even though we might wish to continue reading, the cards throw up their hands saying 'ok you're done for right now'. I see it as a tangible sign that one should rest.

I used one deck for many many years. It never got tired, rarely rested.
Now the reader, often got tired.
And so, I would rest.

Agree with Umbrae and Amaya:
It is not my cards that get tired, but me! I find that it depends on what kinds of readings I am doing as to how many I can do before getting too tired to 'perform'... If I am doing 3-card readings, I can do anything up to 10 in a short space of time before I need to take a break, grab something starchy to eat, etc. If the readings are any bigger, I can go anywhere between 2 and 6 readings. (Though, if the reading is very emotional, just 1 will knock me out for a while!)
Blessings,

Yes, I defenantly think that its ourselfs who are tired, The deck is linked to you and when you inner-self is tired then so are you cards. This probly happens the most when we try to stain a reading... Its like our conscious mind wants to read but our unconscious mind does not. Listen to your inner-self. Thats what i always say

If the cards are conduits and storage for our inner energies, then by definition it is us, not the cards, who get tired. At least, would I be right in seeing the cards this way?
