The other day ago I was talking to my friend about how my studies of the tarot were going, and she mentioned this myth (?) thing she heard about tarot decks.
She heard that they only really, truely work if you recieve the deck as a surprise from someone.
So for example, Little Jill Lou gives a tarot deck to her friend Tiny Bob Will. Tiny Bob Will never thought of owning a deck, and this was a total out of blue gift.... SO according to this myth-y thing, Tiny Bob Will's deck should be very accurate when he reads for people.
I havn't ever heard of this before, and personally I think it's bull****. I have purchased my own decks and when I give readings they turn out pretty darn accurate.
Anyways, what do you think of that myth? What other kinds of "myths" have you heard?

I've heard that one too.
I heard it from a friend recently, who also said she was told "You must wrap your cards in silk and keep it them a wooden box." I think she said she read it out of the book that comes with the BarnesandNoble tarot deck and book set.

I have heard this also, when I was first introduced to Tarot I was told you had to receive them as a gift, and that you could not buy your own decks.... I agree with you, bull hocky! My cards "work" just fine for me, and I have bought all of mine but one :)

Oh, that's so not true, or with crystals or anything else used for divination...
Yeah, it's great to receive decks as pressies, but not imperative. Hell, you could be waiting around forever...

I've heard that this myth is one of the reasons tarot cards are kept in locked cases in most big bookstores. People seemed to think that stealing decks was a loophole in the "You-Mustn't-Buy-A-Deck-For-Yourself" Rule! :D Now I don't know if this story is true, but it sounds like it could be.
Luckily, the first book I read on tarot was Rachel Pollack's Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, which thankfully says nothing about what you MUST and MUST NOT do with your tarot deck! :) Whew! Am I glad!
Peace,
Melvis

Pure bull. A deck you pick out yourself will be one that most likely would work better with you than one picked at random, since you would be making a connection with it via the images with your choice.
Why wait for your first deck? Go out & buy all you like. Othewise you could be waiting decades.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that one... :) I don't believe it. Not that I'd complain if someone got me cards as a gift....:D

I have never heard that one and I think it is spread only on your hemisphere. We have different myths here :D
And if I wanted to believe in each and every, I would have never started reading cards.
One fortuneteller told me that those kinds of things are made up by jealous people who do not want others to start reading Tarot. I just don't believe in what people say.
Blessings :),

It's propaganda put out by the astrologers and ouija board manufacturers.

I suspect it is a story which slowly altered over time...
not that long ago, back in the 50s and 60s, Tarot decks were not as easy to obtain as they have become, so one of the likely provenance of a deck is if someone actually gave you one.
I suspect that from the very likely relative truth of 'the only way to get a Tarot deck is if you're given one!' - said in an air of despair due to its scarcity, the phrase became 'if you want to have a Tarot deck, it must be given to you!' (still reasonably close to its original), to 'You musn't buy a deck for yourself, but be given one... Oh, and you cannot ask for one, for that would be similar to getting one for yourself' ... what can one say !?!
Again, thinking through possible historical reasons helps in both understanding and accepting why it may have been said, and how it may have developed.
The other side to this is the apprenticeship aspect, where one may well ask what the use of getting a deck would be if there wasn't someone to show you what to do with it... again the gifting, in this case, makes sense, and is presumably from one well versed (one hopes) in its use.
Now, of course, 'instructions' have been numerously printed and published in books, numerous easy-to-find courses exist, and there is of course discussion Forums such as this one :)
In any case, not only would I suggest that each feels free to buy one's own deck, but further, the deck another chooses may be somewhat inappropriate through lack of either knowledge or poor personal choice - unless, of course, it's a Marseille (sorry, couldn't resist :D).

The one I laugh at is people say you shouldnt let anyone handle your cards unless they are shuffling for a reading from you. I dont think thats true...I let my daughter play with my cards a bit.

I've heard the same myth. All my decks -- purchased by myself or recieved as gifts -- work just as well as the next. I purchased my very first deck almost a decade ago, and this deck works well for me as I have used it for so long.
Shake that myth!

What about buying yourself the deck, for a gift to yourself!
When your "calling" comes does it matter how you get to the starting gate?

lol.. i haven't heard the tarot must be a gift, though I heard about the silk and wooden box one.
another "myth" someone told me yons ago was how tarot cards are considered "evil", because (this is going to sound confusing...) the tarot opens up the possibility of something happening, when without the tarot, there will be no such possibility. *head spins*
and yup, I totally agree that the tarot is best bought by yourself. For personal stuff such as tarot cards and diaries, I must run my fingers through the lot before one "calls" out to me, and that'll be the one I buy.

when i first learned about tarot, i wanted my own deck so badly, but was scared by the myth that i actually asked my mom to get me one for my birthday. years later, i was like how silly that myth was especially since money was used to get the cards either way if for myself or for someone else.
so i tell my friends who want to get tarot but was scared off by that stupid myth to go ahead, and the cards work really accurately for them as well as for myself when i buy my own decks.
