I find the question of sacred artwork very interesting, because I do believe that the artwork of the older decks sacred, but would have to include that some of the new decks, not sacred at all. Ones that I will not mention, in case I offend....
Would those new decks you refer to include the Hello Kitty tarot? ;)

I didn't know there was a Hello Kitty deck
Tarot has become very commercial which is great, but does this also mean we lose ancient imagery or esoteric meanings or symbols?
In commercialism and the quest for making money, will Tarot lose its' true identity?

I actually read something just recently (can't imagine where) that the "Hello Kitty" product line is now 30 years old--so this tarot deck is developing a historic aura of SOME kind :)
(Seems incredible that it's lasted that long--and gosh, no one's done a "My Little Pony" tarot?)

That's amazing, I would love to own the Hello Kitty deck
30 years? Who would of thought.....
I agree that it must be developing some kind of aura, I don't know about historical...
I wonder who developed the deck? Maybe Pixie Coleman needed some extra cash? :joke: XTAX

Imagemaker: About 30 years sounds right. That is, based on evidence of my extended brood here. We still have Hello Kitty doodads hanging around. I have Hello Kitty Tarot & watches, natch.
Sorry, too, JMD :)

I was trying to instigate a different discussion, but I think I was right :joke: Pixie did need some extra cash....
The Nine of Swords is hysterical  and the Queen of Pents is pretyy nifty too....
Oh how easily we can become distracted.....XTAX :D
Edited to add: jmd will understand, he does own a James Bond deck after all

I would like to see this thread split - I have lost sight of jmd's original musings which, to me anyway, were so important and which moved me.
Can a moderator please make a new thread, perhaps called "The Hello Kitty deck".

*Giggles* well, now you come to mention it I actually know somebody who is considering doing that exact thing.
No, seriously. She's a huge My Little Pony fan, and a great artist. :D
And to tell you the truth, it is one deck I'd love to own, for the 'giggle factor'. })

Oh, funny!
Wise move to split this thread--the Kitty and Pony Show is SO off-topic!

Folks,
The Hello Kitty Tarot is not 30 years old. Hello Kitty, maybe, but not the tarot. I'm not even sure how old the artist is. If I'm wrong, my apologies, but the deck is drawn by artist Joe Rosales.
It might be www.JoeRosales.com, can't remember.

The deck has been around since the 80's sometime. Mid or early, not sure. There's no date at the Tarot Garden database, but he does answer email.

The deck (I heard from him last year) was done as more a gag at first, when friends asked for one. He makes a living as an illustrator & the deck is just a side thing, he doesn't push it all that much.
Nice guy. There's a thread in the archives from 2002 where someone started ragging on the deck that the Hello Kitty was copyright by the Japanese company who owned it and that he's doing copyright violation as a result, but the Japanese companies don't consider 'fan art' to be an infringement on their copyright & don't care (unlike the laws here). The brou-ha-ha died down after that. Such a fuss! Considering there's another company who used Hello Kitty on their vibrators....and didn't get the Japanese company on their tails for it....
Oh--and please, nobody suggest a Smurf deck! I will beat you with a squirrel monkey if you do!

An idea floated around here about a Simpsons deck, which I just adored....but I am positive that there would be huge copyright issues....
(I'd buy it) XTAX
