Hi snuggle
What a cosy, cuddly name!
Anyway, you will find other threads on this subject but as you are just off out I thought I would butt in quickly with my views.
I usually spread the whole deck out on a table where I can look at all the colours and the deck 'altogether' and in order. If its secondhand I always count all the cards (second thoughts, its a good idea to do this anyway). Then I go through each card taking in any thoughts I have about it. Sometimes this bit can take days - but not always. Then, when I feel ready, I shuffle and do a quick spread. I have been known to ask how the deck and I will get along together.
Well that's me, you will find your own way and it will probably change with different decks but it's just a few ideas for you.
Once again, it's that old saying coming into play - just do what feels right for you

On the practical side, make sure that all cards are present. Printers do occasionally make a mistake, and you want to have all of the cards you're supposed to. Don't throw away your receipt until you have done this check.
Then why not just shuffle them for a while? See how easily they shuffle, see which cards "jump out" of the deck, and if they do it
more than once. Maybe that card is important, for some reason. Maybe it has a rough edge or a bend that causes strange behavior.
You don't have to do a formal reading. Maybe you just flip out a card occasionally as you shuffle, see if it is upright or reversed, and what suit it is. You're just getting acquainted with the cards, so just enjoy the feel of them in your hands and the art of the images.

I checked your bio to see if there was a deck listed that you liked...and if my fourteen-year-old nephew had asked me about a deck, I would have gone with his interests and bought him a theme that suits his personality.
It can be confusing and there are some decks that are a bit too unusual even with some books. However you had an affinity to the Roots of Asia in another post and the booklet that comes with it is very good. The publisher of Roots of Asia tends to do decks that feel positive and suggests intelligent ideas...but if you find the art a little too dark and the Asian Buddhist theme confusing, I am guessing people here can also suggest a good deck with a gentle feel, if that is what you want...or if you post an art theme that you are attracted to as well, perhaps they can also help guide you.
Best wishes in your choice. I hope there's a good booklet available or book as well in the set, that suits your needs.
