Hi, i just bought some tarot cards and have been interested in getting a set for quite some time, but i have a problem.
I don't know how to read them and what i mean by that is i know what the meanings of each card means ( i have a book ) hahahha, but how do i read all of them together as a whole? I hope i'm making sense! ( HAHAHAH ) I tend to confuse people as well as myself sometimes hah. But i really want to know how to really get into reading the cards.
Is there a prep time for doing this, and what are the best spreads for doing certain readings? I also have some other questions but i'm not sure if i should ask them here or if there is a dofferent site i need to go too? It's about wicca's, anyone know anything about that? If you have ANY info on any of this PLEASE let me know..
Thank you so much, Angelmom

Hi Angelmom,
Yes, you read them as a whole. The same card can hold different meaning within each spread, it all depends on what makes sense in the context. When you use your tarot cards, try to look at a spread as a whole story, and connect the cards with each other as if they were part of a story.
I'd start out with just practising, drawing a daily card for yourself, and see what you feel about the image on the card. What is to be seen on the image of the card and what does that mean to you? Then, you can check the meaning of it in your book. Books don't have solid 'meanings' of cards though, try letting your intuition guide you, really look at the cards and see what they mean to you.
For spreads, I'd start simple, with a daily card, or a 3 card spread. (For instance, you could do a 3 card spread on morning-afternoon-evening, or past-present-future) Try this site for lots of different spreads:
http://www.anjastarot.dk/spreads/index.htm
As far as Wicca goes, there's a message board on http://www.wicca.com that you could try for your questions.
Hope that helped a little :)

Hello from a fellow Hoosier! :D
I'd suggest starting out here:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/
Read about different spreads and how people use them by browsing around in here:
http://www.tarotforum.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=56
When I was a beginner, I always tried to use the Celtic Cross spread. I thought it was the only "real' spread. I've come to see that this is not true at all -- and my advice to you is to start small, perhaps with a three-card spread. There are a few good ones out there.
Very basic, and a classic:
1. Past
2. Present
3. Future
More depth:
1. What kind of situation is manifest now
2. What influences the situation
3. How the situation may develop
(Kay Stevenson, Spiral Tarot)
or:
1. Where am I physically?
2. Where am I mentally?
3. Where am I spiritually?
(Tracy Porter, Tarot Companion
(I picked those last two up by reading the tarot spread discussion in the second link, up there.)
I hope this helps you get started. People here are always happy to answer questions, so fire away! :)

Hi Angelmom,
Welcome to AT!
I agree, Thirteen's Basics is an excellant tool, also you might want to try Joan Bunnings on line Tarot course at www.learntarot.com. There is no fee for this course.
A lot of us here are also participating in 78 weeks study you may find this helpful.
Journaling is a very effective method, writing down each card, how it makes you feel, your impressions and discriptions, as well as keeping a written record of your readings.
I hope some of these suggestions help. ;)

Welcome to the madhouse! :D
If you are referring to contacting spirits of people who have passed over, I'm sure there are a few people here who can help; I've never attempted this before, but maybe using the search function on the forum might turn up a few things.

If you want your loved ones and spirit guides to help you read the cards....just ask them. They will most likely come through whether you hear them/feel them/see them or not.

Angelmom, I'll pass on to you what my mother believes, and her mother before her, and hers too all back as far as we know...your mom knows!
She may *be* one of the grandchildren, or one of their children.
Tell your children stories about yourself as a child. Mine love those stories. They will get to know and appreciate your mother that way too. She remains a presence in your life because all the knowledge of mothering you use out of reflex you probably got from her.
