Stick to spreads with no more than 6 cards for quite awhile (I prefer 4).
Also, you can do the cross part of the Celtic Cross all by itself, or the staff part (4 cards in vertical line) all by itself and get plenty of information without getting overwhelmed and confused.

I've done a three card reading for myself every day for some time now, plus longer spreads a few times a year- like New Year's, my birthday, the equinoxs and solstices- or whenever I feel the need for a more in depth take on a situation. If I don't understand what the cards are trying to say I don't stress anymore. I've found that if I wait, the reading almost always becomes clear as circumstances unfold. Also, if the cards have something important to say and I don't get it right away, I've found that I will keep getting the same or similar cards until they have gotten through to me. In sum, my tip is to do readings regularly and to not stress if they are not immediately clear.

**pun alert!**
don't flip out over reversals. (:D i crack myself up, hehe!)
i've found that saying to yourself (or querent) "this card means ____... only with a twist" tends to open a new door when you're stuck. when reversals need to be read, it seems that they'll make themselves known.

When you shuffle the deck for a one-card-reading of the day, and a card falls off, please pick it up. This is your card of the day.
Even with a 3 card reading, many a time, 1 or 2 cards are turned face up while shuffling or arranging the spread. These should be telling your something, and they usually reveal the message that you may want to take special note of throughout the day or to give you 'instant' insights into a specific inquiry ....

Accept the cards you get. Encourage your querent, as gently as you can, to accept the cards they get. Those first cards are the reading!
Also, find your center, and read from there.

There are some discussion lists at yahoo where the moderators post daily exercizes for beginners. You go to yahoo "groups" section and type "tarot". Noose a bit and you will find the lists I'm talking about. These ex. help connect the cards without any requirement for accuracy.

Always trust your intuition! and don't get bogged down with other people's perceptions of rules or what is "right" or "wrong" in regards to Tarot. Only you know what feels "right" for your experience with Tarot, but be open to learn and grow from other people experiences, opinions and insights.

PS. Had a good chuckle at TemperanceAngel's Hairdresser tip! - a good one to remember :-)

1) Don't mix up superstition and Tarot - they make lousy bedfellows
2) Don't mix up Tarot and supersition - they have nothing to do with each other
3) Don't mix up Supersition and Tarot nor Tarot and Superstition

If you keep a journal try to remember to write all the cards you draw down in it, especially the daily draws - even if you can't see how that card could relate to you in anyway.
Also if you get stuck with a card just go back to basics, put the books away, and just look at it. Sometimes you'll get that 'aha' feeling and you see something in the card that you've missed.

Can't find thread for this, but may well have missed it, as I'm very new to the site. Or maybe the best tips are all mixed up in other forums. If I've put this stuff in the wrong place, please someone redirect me !
Anyhow, I just wanted to share a good tip I have: if you want to clarify a reading, its a good idea to lay it out again in a different deck. So: I might have done a reading using, say, my favorite Morgan Greer. Then I lay the whole thing out again in an entirely different deck, putting the two readings out side by side on the same table.
You can use up to three different decks for this. I find that any more than that gets confusing Besides, my table isn't bg enough.
Obviously, you have to use corresponding decks, ie with the same number of major & minor arcana each.
Maybe someone already suggested this, but I haven't come across it before.
Comments ?

...add the numerical value of all the cards in the spread (major and minor arcana) and excluding the court cards. Reduce the total to its one and/or two digit number between 1 and 22 (as the Fool who has been at least once around). The Major Arcana card/s the number/s correspond to can often shed further light upon the reading. I think of it as an underlying energetic archetype... often proves to be most interesting...
great thoughts and tips so far...:-)

Whence reading, focus in the moment; the now.
Forget everything else.
Be open to the first thoughts &/or images, regardless if they make sense or not. The moment is not about "making sense" but about connecting; *being receptive*.

I really like the idea of not looking at any other information, just you, a card and a journal and write down everything that you see, what comes to mind, how it makes you feel and what you think the card means, etc. until you've gone through your entire deck. Then check it with the LWB, decide which one you like better. That was my first intro to Tarot and I was surprised by how close I was, others were out in space, but I didn't care, since it was all a learning experience.
Another tip is read the Study Groups, Using Tarot Cards and DO exchange readings with others. A freind and I interpret each others spreads regularly, so it's a lot of fun, for one thing and gives us new perspectives to our readings since we have different decks, both RWS based, but it has expanded our knowledge of Tarot, ourselves and created a lovely bond as well.
