You can see decks listed by category here You might like to check out the beginners decks.
And there is a thread where it tells you where you can see all the cards from different decks here
My personal recommendation is the Hanson-Roberts deck, but a lot of people recommend the Robin Wood for a first deck. See what you like, and go for one you enjoy, but I would check first that it is suitable for a beginner :)
There are some links for buying decks here (If you buy them through a link on aeclectic, some of the money goes to keeping this site running.) I've found amazon.co.uk reliable but very slow. In the UK, Waterstones and Borders stock some Tarot decks, but the widest choice is available online.
Hope this helps. You've got a lot of fun ahead of you if you're just starting out. Let us know how you get on.

If you're in New York, I'll bet you have access to all kinds of new age and magick shops that would stock them. Most regular bookstore have at least a few decks- the best chain bookstore for tarot IMHO is Borders, but you probably have more choices in NYC than I do here.
You could also try the web sites at Amazon.com and at Tarot Garden.
And you can order cheap ones at overstock.com, though they don't always have exactly the deck you want.
I get used ones once in a while at Half Price Books- some used bookstores carry them and some don't, so you have to explore a bit to find places that work for you.
Once you're looking for them, you'll be amazed how many stores carry them.;

Also, since most stores can order from US Games, Llewellyn & Lo Scarabeo, if you know which deck you want & the price (and that it's in print currently), any bookstore can usually order it for you. Definately check out the Aeclectic deck pages, you'll be able to see up to 6 cards from each deck to see if you like their art styles, and many do have reviews listed.

Snuggle.. it is absolutly important that you buy a deck that has images that "Speak" to you. In meaning when you see the pictures on the deck, each picture apears to have a story behind it. Its a crusial tip. There should be a forum about how to peck the deck which is right for you. plus Aeclectic has lots and lots of deck you can look through.

Hi Snuggles:
Check out this link to AT's review on Tarot Decks:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/tarotr.shtml.
You can view a sample of cards from a wide variety of decks. I recommend purchasing a deck that 'speaks' to you. Good luck and happy shopping!

You could take a look on Ebay...
that was where I got my Dragon Tarot from. Just make sure you purify/cleanse them straight away.

Emiac: This is a very individual thing. Some people believe that cards can store negative energy. Some people don't. Some people believe that there's no such thing as positive and negative energy - but just Energy fullstop.
Some people believe that the cards are just pieces of cardboard with ink on them and can't store energy at all.
Personally, I never cleanse a deck (I tried it a couple of times when I joined Aeclectic and saw that people did this but I felt quite ridiculous doing it and hope no-one saw me. :D ).
When I get a deck, I just shuffle and read. Whether it's a new deck or an old one.

I was in NYC right before Christmas and figured it would be a haven for new age shops. I could not have been more wrong. I had found a website with 4 listed and of course the first two I went to were closed.
I did visit a nice little shop in the Village on West 10th Street called Morgana's Chamber. If you PM me, I will get you their exact address and phone number. There was another shop on the East Side whose name escapes me and I didn't visit, but heard it was halfway decent.
Good luck.
