It isn't often I visit the New Members area - mainly through lack of time, and in many ways not really knowing how to best welcome new members.
When I do visit, I am always struck by the wonderul positive sense in which this Forum reflects to general positivity generally found throughout Aeclectic - even if we do on rare occasions have some friction to ignite our thoughts as to where we stand on some issues.
I couldn't help go past a wonderful response made by mj07, who writes, regarding a choice of decks:Is this not also the case not only for the choice of decks, but how we best contribute and participate within this community ?!?
Thank you mj07... the 'obvious', clearly stated, reflects the transcendence of understanding and wisdom to mere knowledge...

Nice one, jmd! and mj07 of course!
It takes time to find out what you enjoy and it changes too! Some decks I loved do not interest me anymore and others I used to leave on the side have come and rushed into my Tarot life ... Thanks to this site and the feedback, opinions, feelings, ramblings, "standing ovations" we can read every day here.
And I should be cleaning the house but I cannot help finding interesting things here ...
This is my answer to my previous own thread about polemics, that can have been misunderstood as an attack to this dear forum.
Blessings,
Kissa

jmd I'm so glad you've brought this up. Lately I have found myself not enjoying AT as much as I did, so I knew I needed a break from it.
I think it's like all 'close' communities, where sometimes people say things on here that upset others, sometimes intentional and sometimes not. When that happens I have a natural disinterest. Its not what I'm here for. If only everyone could respect other people's likes and dislikes and their opinions.
I took up Tarot out of interest which turned into intrigue which turned into studying and wanting to know more, and it's now part of my life - it's more than a hobby - I really love it and I really enjoy it.
It's good to have a reminder of what we are here for - the enjoyment of Tarot

I agree with all of this.
Also, to expound on some of moonbow's thoughts - I have had mostly good experiences here on AT. I have had some problems with one member, but that is not deterring me from continuing my participation. I came here initially to get reacquainted with tarot and I lurked for awhile. However, I feel so much like part of the community and feel blessed with some of the friendships I have made with so many of you! We even have a local tarot circle which began through these forums.
A few years ago, I wanted to pick up tarot again. Since the internet was still developing, I found the only community available to me was the old alt.tarot newsgroup. It immediately made me feel so uncomfortable with all the bickering and egocentric posts that I not only turned away from the newsgroup, but from tarot (and spirituality) in general.
I feel as if I am a different person than I was before I became part of this community. I hope it lasts forever because I firmly believe that we are always in a state of development and self-awareness.

As with life, there's only two reasons to come to Aeclectic:
1. Learning
2. Fun
And if you can combine the two so much the better. ;)
Enjoy.

Yes, I'm learning more than I ever expected by being here.
Fun, I have a fun just reading the threads & also when I screw up my replys. I sit here & laugh thinking, "oh sh**, I done it again"
I have more fun here sometimes, than I do visiting with people that I know.
Thanks for the fun & knowledge!

a bit weirded out (and honoured!) about being quoted.
I'll add that so far I've had nothing but fun here at AT, and have been learning SO much I feel like my head will explode (it's all good!) I'm sure it will continue! Thanks to you all!

Yes, have to say that I used to go to tarotl a lot (hope it is not against etiquette to mention the name) but in the end I found it so much NOT fun. It was impossible to post casually - you had to either be prepared to spend ages (time I don't have) preparing a meticulously researched post which was in every part totally logical and backed up by quotable fact - or risk getting flamed (I had a four-pager emailed to me privately telling me I was an idiot - something about my reading of Umberto Eco upset the person - in fact my thesis was in part on Eco, and in any case I wasn't saying anything very controversial). That's just miserable.
What I like about AT is that there is room for the very academic postings - which is great - and also room for something quick and not seriously meant (and everything in between). As I come here partly for relaxation (we spend hours and hours each week in front of the computer) that's really very important to me. I have SO enjoyed the laughter that both Diana's postings on how to medicate cats and Firemaiden's spoof readings have given me.
Fun should be taken seriously.
