I've been doing some reading again from the book, "the Urban Shaman" by Serge King. In his section concerning divination, Dr. King mentions a technique he uses concerning negative readings. He will take the negative reading and turn it around saying "this doesn't have to be!!" I do this sometimes (usually not with Tarot). It seems to help the client to know that they are really in control to some extent. Have others tried this method with any success?

Hi DesertHowler,
I've read Urban Shaman too and I posted about this very same subject a while back. ;)
Here's my thread, you may want to have a look at it.

What a fabulous thread and that last post by Ruby Red Slippers--aim for the feeling you want--is so inspiring and wise.
Tuning in to our deepest feelings is what intuition training is all about (thus giving us a chance to act from deep knowledge). I think tarot is an profound tool for helping us become aware of specific, separate feelings in a focused way. Usually they're such a mess of conflict!
When a "negative" outcome gives us a bad feeling, we have the opportunity to change something on our path to lead to a better-feeling place.

This reminds me a bit of the book Tarot Spells by Janina Renee...
You pull the cards that represent your goal... and use visualizations, etc... I don't own the book so I can't go into more detail.. but I skimmed through it at Borders once and it seems like a similar premise...

It is pretty similar, but without all the rituals that are used in spells (and that I personally don't like, which is why I got rid of Janina Renee's book... :D ).
For me, the best method is to put the cards up somewhere where I see them regularly (I always put them up on the notice board that is on the wall next to my computer; I spend a lot of time at my computer so I'm sure to see them there! ;) ). Every time I see them, I'm reminded of the goals I had in mind. I leave them up there until I feel I've really taken them in. Sometimes, they are up for a very long time... :D

I've never read the book you refer to, but almost from the beginning of my learning tarot, i automatically turn negative readings into readings with the potential to change any possible negative outcomes...I may term the phrase as; this may happen if you do/don't do something... or this reading is only suggesting that that unless you change something/stay the same this may happen...or, these are only possibilities, you have the power to change this outcome...i guess it comes from my background in communication skills/counselling....but I think it is a much better approach, and you are correct DesertHowler, does put the client in control of their own destiny...which is what they are anyway, right?

I, personally, do not believe in negative readings, load of ol' baloney!!!!
People ask me all the time, 'That's not bad is it!' or 'That doesn't mean something terrible will happen....'
I see it as a challenge.....
Life isn't perfect and the cards reflect that, they are there to guide us but not to ever be negative!
Negative? What kinda word is that? XTAX

Negative? What kinda word is that? XTAX That's the whole point of what is being said in Urban Shaman: how to interpret a reading that at first may seem negative in a positive, constructive way and how to visualise this interpretation.
