Hmmm this is a tough question! But for me a newbie I look at it like, first of all the supposed christians are blindly following their church leaders and does anyone recall the recent pediophilia issues (I think I spelled the pedophilia wrong, forgive me). They should be following and listening to Christ first. I am still struggling with this issue of Christianity and I guess you could lump it under the occult. I studied wicca a little bit and guess what the similiarities to Catholicism were amazing.
Do you still believe (or did you ever believe) in God? If so ask HIM what he thinks rather than listen to crazy fanatics. He might not speak in your ear but you will know what his answer is! And don't let anyone tell you what God thinks especially if they quote the bible because anyone can get ANY meaning they want out of the bible. After all it was written and rewritten by man, not God.

My mother used to tell me that everything happens for a reason, and the God doesn't give us more than we can handle, and we must learn from that. And when we learn that lesson then we move on. I believe that.
I used to think my life was total #$%@! Nothing ever went right and I was convinced that my life was one big Murphy's Law. I felt like my life was spiraling out of control.
When I first started reading tarot, (because obviously I needed guidence ;) ) the cards said the same thing over and over, I finally got to a point where I thought why even shuffle, they are just going to tell me the same thing. Then I finally realized, if I don't ever change anything of course they will.
It has been a slow process, but I began to change the way I felt about people around me, my actions, my reactions to those bad things that kept happening to me. and more importantly the way I felt about myself. I have begun to see a change in my fortune in many ways.
I don't believe that tarot has brought anything but good into my life, because it has helped me learn more about myself, and who I am, and how to change what I don't like.
I have never believed that God punished me, but was trying to teach me life lessons ( I call them Karmic lessons) that I was too dense to understand ( and sometimes still am). But I certainly have never felt punished for reading tarot.
I think that you should do what you feel is right for you, not what someone else thinks you should do.

We are always going to get people who oppose the tarot especially christians, After all the church crucified christ, because they were threatened by him, the catholics at the time of the great scurge of witches and pagans killed and tortured over 60 million. They killed more in history than any other. Jesus was a great prophet and medium and healer. So not have anymore of those sort of people they made it evil. Do you want to listen to people who's history was evil? Do you think you're evil? No such thing sweetie! time to listen to yourself and not live anyone else's life aye. Afterall they will not die for you, so don't live for them!

The Old Testament is absolutely chock full of divination so it's been used in the religion since the beginning. Tarot isn't mentioned in the bible at all (how could it, it developed in the Middle Ages), but I see no conflict with the church & it.
If you're doing this with good intent, how could anyone come down on you? Listen to your heart & let others deal with their fears. Personally I see no conflict with using the cards.

___Talking more seriously now, you are old enough to know your own mind and to read and understand from a different point of view than that of your family. It is not easy to do that if you are in the habit of giving in to them, and if they are in the habit of butting in. Every person must decide for themselves what God/dess means to them and how he/she works in their life. Family has no business in such personal matters .
In my own case, I would have a huge argument with my family over the tarot if I permitted it. And the irony is, I am much more religiously educated than they are . Yet they would accuse me of ignorance nonetheless. Their minds are closed.
Religions have always used prohibitions to keep people from exploring and to maintain control. There is really no mystery to it.
**I wave my magic wand and declare you are free to decide for yourself. **
