I am not certain if this is the correct place for this thread.... but I was wondering when everyone thought or knew it was time for a new deck. I know that lots of the AT people collect many decks for many reasons, but what was that initial prompt to move onto another deck?
I have had the same two decks -- Universal and Rider-Waite but recently have had several dreams with unknown cards and so I have started looking for a new deck - one to match my imaginary cards... Just curious...

Any time is good time for a new deck. Maybe you should pull a card about it?

For me, it's a good time for a new deck when...
a) I see a deck that interests me, and
b) I have the money!

I agree with Shesawolf!
I've also had dreams where I was inside the tarot card, but haven't found the deck I was wondering around in yet. That just means I have to keep searching!

I usually end up buying a new deck when I see one that interests me, usually online in a thread here, and the artwork has such an impact I just want to have it in my hand. However, I can't read with some of the decks in my collection but they are all pretty lol :D
Or it works the other way and you just know that you'll be able to read and work with the deck, then you just have to have it - I found the Morgan Greer like that, very easy deck to read with and my favourite.

I did it when I:
1. Had money
2. Found one that was calling to me particularly strongly (like the Shapeshifters I have ordered today).
I don't necessarily "move onto" the new deck, I just continue with my old ones, and incorporate the new one in :)

Maybe when you start thinking about getting a new deck is how you know when it's time to get a new deck! :D

As a non-collector of tarot myself. I purchase a new deck when I need a change of scenery and a fresh outlook from my current deck. I think its also nice to have a few decks even if youre not interested in collecting just for the pourpose of relieving boredom of your current deck. You can rotate them.

The right time for me to buy a new deck is when:
A) I see one that I connect with. (Hurry up, Gilded!)
B) I have the cash.
And
C) My wife says I can have it!

I have a few decks, I have the universal waite, and the cosmic tarot, as well as The FAerie Oracle deck (non-tarot). I don't have as much of a connection with my two tarot decks, my faerie deck is very strong, and i'm linked closelywith it. I keep searching for a tarot deck that will communicate to me. So i keep looking throgh tarot cards, searching for a deck that really speak to me. REcently, I had a friend come over and we went over some tarot stuff together. She brought over a Morgan Greer Tarot deck and I really liked the art work on it. I was helping her with interpreting the cards with this deck, and it did speak a lot to me. So I'm hoping (crossing my fingers) that I'll find this deck available and I'll connect with this deck.
It's a good time to get a new deck when you feel like there is something else out there, that you don't feel that your divination tools are completed.
I hope this all makes sense.

Come all without
Come all within
You've not seen nothin like the mighty Quinn
:D
*ahem*
Other than that, I have nothing to add. If you've either outgrown your decks, or have reason to think it's time to get another one, go for it.

Well done Cricket !! You have brought a smile to my face....
I have decided that I must move on to a new deck -- there is something I need learn and it must be through a new deck!

I've had two decks total in my um...few months of really being into Tarot.
I bought the second one because I just couldn't seem to get along with my my first one! I ended up passing that deck on to a friend and it suits him perfectly.
I've been wanting to get a new deck,m just to get a new one, but don't have the money right now :(
I say, get a new deck whenever you feel like it, if you can.

I have only one deck, and never knew people had more than one before I came here! LOL... So it got me looking for a new one to fool around with. I haven't found one yet, but want one, so I guess it's not time yet for me! Good luck in finding the one from your dream!

Sagitarian, I can really relate to your post. I started with an Oracle deck, then purchased a Tarot deck, then a few more Oracle decks, then two more Tarot decks. I don't have a connection with any of my Tarot decks but I do with all of my Oracle decks. And that frustrates me, so I am on the never-ending search for "the one" deck that's going to do it for me.
I'm almost of the opinion that I'm just not suited to Tarot.
When I say connection, I'm talking more about my ability to intuit the Tarot card's meaning. I seem to draw the correct cards in the spread, I just have to always look up the meaning.
However, with my Oracle decks, I can just spurt out my interpretation and they are usually accurate.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm just curious....does anyone think that I should just perhaps stick with Oracle decks, or continue the hunt for that elusive deck?
Cheers

Knowing that there are several tarotholic enablers here (and I have been known to be one myself) I am going to do a different take on this question.
You may (or may not) come into a phase where the question becomes, "How do you know when it's time to stop buying new decks?"
I am one who, when he becomes interested in a study or art, voraciously buys all I can. I did this with tarot when I became interested again after 18 years and even moreso when I joined this forum.
I have now come to a point where I am curbing my appetite to buy more decks. I realized that I became enamoured of decks that, once I had them, I found that they were only a passing fancy.
Some people take this phase to simply trade decks for others. I am finding that having so many decks is creating distraction and clutter. It is like working at a desk with piles of papers strewn about. You have difficulty focusing because so many projects are screaming at you to be done; thus you end up doing nothing.
Presently, I am taking the slow process of deciding which decks I no longer connect with and selling them to others. The only new deck I have bought is Kat Black's Golden Tarot. Even with that, the anticipation and delays in publishing helped me ruminate for quite a while as to whether I truly wanted this deck or whether it was a passing fancy. The Golden ended up being quite significant.
Having only two versions of the RWS deck, perhaps you should be browsing and seeing if another tradition might be good for you, say the Thoth and its derivatives or the Marseilles. For either one, you will find much support here in learning their systems.

I should probably take Khatruman's advice to heart. Think the problem for me is, I'm kind of a collector, so I find something I like, books, comics, DVDs, etc. I just go nutso. I have no self control! Maybe I need therapy? :D
