hello there.
im new to all this and would like some help. i am really interested in tarot and have been for some time, but only recently have i had the guts to actually go for it. i was recommended to this site and found it to be extremly useful and informative. but..... i have to admit, and please dont chuck me off this site for saying it, but im a tad sceptable about it. i had a reading once about 2 years ago, and to me it wasnt a very good experience, she would say one thing and then change her mind and say another thing. she would say something would happen and it wouldnt, do you actually tell people when things will happen?
i want to have another reading, so i can experience it but where do i go? you say that i should get recommendations from people but i live in a very very conserative town where i dont know anyone who has had a reading!
im at a cross roads in my life at the moment and would like some direction - please help?????
thanks for taking time to read my post.
hugs

Hi Sarah and welcome to AT!
I've had bad readings by others myself... but it's a learning process, reading Tarot, so perhaps you just found yourself with someone less knowledgable, or perhaps they were unsure of themselves. Tarot isn't an exact science, to me anyhow.
The best places to get readings in the states would be smaller metaphysical shops, but you mentioned there weren't many near you, and I realize you're in the UK.
Here, readings are offered now at major bookstore chains (such as Borders, Barnes/Noble), that's another option, I don't know if they're doing that in the UK or not.
There are reading opportunities here on AT, but to request a reading from the Reading Exchange forum, you will need a minimum of 25 posts. Best of luck to you on your path.....

Hi Periwinkle! Welcome to Aeclectic.
There are plenty of places here where you could get a reading. If you have a deck and do a draw for yourself, you can then post it in the Your Readings Section where wonderful people will give you a hand in interpreting it.
Or you could have a paid reading done by MeeWah or Lee, both of whom are amazing readers.
Or, as Alissa says, once you reach 25 posts, you can join in on the Reading Exchange.
Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you'll love it here!
No one would be critical of you for saying you're a bit sceptical; I know I was when I started out. Welcome to the family.

periwinkle - first, welcome to AT.
Like any work discipline, you will find people who are good at their jobs while some are not so good. You may have encountered a bad reader. Sometimes, however, a reading can be "muddled" - things are not always clear or cut and dried. A good reader though would indicate that and perhaps reshuffle the cards and start from scratch. Don't let a bad experience sway you.
In my brief history on AT, I have found so many different beliefs on what goes on behind a reading. Although some believe tarot is a tool for divining the future, the common concensus appears to be that tarot is a guide to help you in your life. It opens up doors and allows you to see things that you may otherwise be missing. It also can help you make decisions or allow you to cope with certain situations.
I feel readers fall into several categories:
You have the "psychic" reader who believes there is a force that is providing the information they are giving you.
Then there is the "intelligent" reader who follows the accepted definitions of cards and sticks to them rigidly.
There is the "intuitive" reader who looks at the cards and is drawn by their imagery.
And there is the reader who uses elements of all of the above. I feel I fall into this category. I firmly believe there are forces which guide us somehow so I believe in all types of psychic phenonmenon. I also have read all the books and have a keen understanding of what the cards are supposed to mean. However, I find myself doing mostly intuitive readings lately (and this could have something to do with psychic ties as well).
One thing I am sure of - tarot works. Don't let one bad reading make you skeptical.
Just my opinions.

Hi Sarah, I'm sceptical too.... and I sincerely hope I stay that way. I reckon it's good to be uncertain - it keeps our whiskers twitching, our noses to the wind. It keeps us flexible and open and questioning.
Sure, there's loads of rubbish tarot readers out there..... but there's also some truly amazing ones too. How can you tell the difference? I honestly don't know..... but what I do know is that you'll find some here. There's been a recent thread about what makes a good tarot reader - here - http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23458

Nah, nobody's going to chuck you off the forums for being a skeptic... heck, I've been doing tarot for ten years and I'm still a skeptic!! Makes it really irritating when I'm in the middle of a reading... ha ha! :)
I don't know how many people here use tarot as a prediction tool; I use mine for advice and for bringing things to my attention that I may not have noticed. I usually bomb miserably when trying to predict future occurances.

I share your input here Illy. I've been reading for a little over ten years, and i'm still skeptical myself. I've also done "good" readings, and "bad" readings as well. Some people i've discovered are very hard to read, and i've also made the connection that to those that are hard to read, either they don't believe, or, they are very intuitive themselves and you are purposely being blocked by either them, or their guides.
Welcome to Aeclectic hon. There's lots of good stuff here! It's better then any book i've ever read! A lot more diversity, where you feel you get "the whole picture" when you ask a question about a card.
I'm all out of suggestions as they suggested everything that you can do already! Take care, and i hope you find this place to be as much of a "home" on the internet as i have.
