I just read for a friend, and while the Celtic Cross went well, when she asked other questions and we attemped to get some information in other spreads, the cards started to behave in a strange way, as though they were making fun of us. I closed the reading and told my friend that we would continue another time.
Granted, I was tired, and a Celtic Cross was really all I could do, but I have the feeling that sometimes my cards play jokes on me. Not that that is a bad thing, it add personality and keeps me grounded.
Do your cards act like that sometimes?

I think that at times our own emotional and physical state bleeds over into the cards in such a way as to either produce readings that are heavily slanted to how we are feeling or readings that just seem to be mocking us ;)
One of the reasons why I just don't think it's a good idea to try to read, for myself or anyone else, if I am not feeling well, if I'm really distracted, or just plain tired. It's too easy to get a reading that probably has very little to do with the actual question, but instead, has to do with your current emotional and phsyical state. Such a reading could be damaging to the person you were reading for, even if for yourself, as no matter how many times we tell people that the tarot is not chiseled in stone, it's hard to totally discount what it tells you.
Now, if any of that makes any sense to anyone but me, please let me know :D

One time I aksed the cards (RW) for some ways I could get some extra money. I drew three cards for three possible avenues. One of the cards was the seven of swords. I had to laugh out loud! ( It looks like the guy is sneaking off with some of the swords) I should have specified by asking for some ways I could earn some extra money. lol That made me laugh and realize the question is just as important as the answer.

I know what you mean!
Once I asked "What will she ultimately choose to do?" and it gave me Justice: "She will do what she thinks is right" :P
That was sort of like that LOL

I too have had responses that make me laugh out loud. I find it a dry wit, as in your example about the Justice card.

An occassional reading of this kind is what has convinced me that the little beasts are alive. Or at least sentient.
I've discovered that when any deck starts giving me readings that make no sense, if I leave them for a day in a sunny window sill they're soon okay. I usually put a quartz crystal on top of them.
I don't blame them. Now and again I like a day to just relax in the sun.

That is a really scary thought @_@ Should I start treating them like plants now? Make sure I talk to them and expose them to an adequate amount of sunlight? Only instead of water, I bathe them in incense fumes? @_@ Should I start talking to them too?

What a fun thread!
Mine have a sense of humour, too. In fact, I'm convinced they have whole personalities :)
The Robin Wood I feel is really the deck that's teaching me: it's rather lenient in the way that it will work fine when, for example, I can't bear to turn off the tv that's running for background noise, but as soon as I don't concentrate properly, we get complete nonsense readings, mostly by way of the nastiest cards the deck can throw at me. It's like it's saying, 'Oy, listen here, pet, if you want to work with me you better work with me!' Then again, I will be thinking about what a good love spread would be while idly shuffling and when I peek at the bottom card, it'll be the Lovers or 2/Cups. Giving me a good few laughs, that deck is :D
Interestingly, it doesn't seem to like outright silly questions, though, whereas the Vampire is all game for them. :P
The Pagan feels less like a teacher than a close contemporary friend (the RoWo feels older, somehow, kind of a magister/apprentice relationship), who will talk day-to-day sense to you. ::lol:: is my geek showing? I'm having way too much fun getting to know my decks.

One of the things I like about ATF is that we learn to experiment with our cards until we find the way to work with them that suits us......and we find the most effective.
I haven't talked to them, since the little beasts have ears and heaven knows what they'd do to me if they didn't like the conversation. I do put them in a window on a sunny day. Mostly I treat them with respect. So I guess my asnwer is, whatever works best for your purposes.
Goddess Bless.
P.S. Sorry to answer this post so late. My cards have been so obstreperous I had to give them extra attention.

My Victoria Regina used to act like that for me all the time. Couldn't get a usefull reading out of them. So I traded them away. Maybe it was me, maybe it was them, didn't matter. I solved that problem & got the Goddess Tarot in trade which I ended up giving to a friend who absolutely loves them.
