Some decks say for "advance readers."
I think one should be able to read with any deck, learn as you go.
How do we know when we are advance readers?
Thanks for any replys.

Advance readers? Sorry, made me think of cohorts of readers advancing into battle...!
Seriously, hmmm, all that it means is that the deck requires more understanding, and that understanding comes from experience, which leads to one being more advanced. The RWS or the TotOP decks for example are easier to understand than the Thoth or the 1JJ for example.
How do we know when we are advanced? It's when we can look at a minor Arcana of the a non-illustrated deck, and understand intimately the card. Not just that of course, but it's one measure.

I think once a person thoroughly learns one deck well (and has tossed the LWB) then they can go on to any other deck & be able to do the learning curve without getting confused.

ADVANCED READER TEST:
1. Aleister Crowley is a Leo Rising.
True [] False[]
2. The querent draws Death, 10 of Swords and 5 of Disks. Do you:
(a) Explain that great change is about to occur that is inevitable and that he/she should take care of financial concerns?
(b) Ask the querent if he/she drove to the reading and if yes, could someone pick them up?
(c) Point behind the querent and yell "Look!!". When the querent turns around, change the cards.
3. You own:
(a) 5 or less decks
(b) 6 to 10 decks
(c) 11-20
(d) You need to go count them to answer the question.
4. You are going to the beach. Do you...
(1) Leave your reading deck at home.
(2) Leave your deck in your car.
(3) Leave your deck in your beach bag.
(4) Place your deck in a waterproof bag and stick it inside your bathing suit just in case you go for a stroll along the beach, strike up a conversation which inevitably turns to Tarot, whereupon the person asks for a reading.
5. When you go to Starbucks, you...
(a) Order a grande non-fat latte and sprinkle vanilla powder on it then head for your car or the sidewalk.
(b) Order a grande non-fat latte and sprinkle vanilla powder on it then look for an empty table where you just feel compelled to pull your deck out, fake a reading for yourself and wait for someone to notice and come over and ask you if you can read their cards.
6. Who painted the RWS deck?
(a) R
(b) W
(c) S
7. A Haindl is...
(a) The thing you hold to remove a pot from the stove.
(b) That concave area between your nose and your mouth.
(c) A really easy Tarot deck to understand and read with.
(d) None of the above.
8. You read for yourself...
(a) Once a week
(b) Never
(c) Before you go on a date, go for a job interview or decide whether or not to paint the living room.
9. On a full moon you...
(a) feel a little crazy
(b) stay indoors
(c) put your favourite decks near a window then check them periodically to make sure the moonlight hasn't shifted.
10. Reversals are...
(a) Essential
(b) Irrelevant
(c) I'm not saying and I hate Reversals threads.

If you needed to look, you are definitely not an advanced reader.

LOL lawguy51! As good an "Advanced Reader" quiz as one is likely to find:-)
Irregardless of the label "advanced" or "beginner", I can tell if I'm ready enough for a deck by looking at the scans. If I look at a deck and think, "Huh, interesting.", and then move on, then I know I haven't connected with it for whatever reason. If I look at it's cards and feel I know just what those colors mean, why there's a tiger, blue rose, or bear skull in that card, maybe what happend just before "X" scenario and/or what is about to occur; in other words if it fires up my ituition and imagination and stimulates my reasoning (without stumping it), then it and I will have a happy relationship. I may well understand it better at some future point, but I am ready for it now on some level and I will be enriched for using it.

Way to go, Lawguy!
Actually, Ros, if you read intuitively, you can read with any deck at any time.

Lara -
Out of curiosity - have you ever been able to read intuitively with a Marseilles style deck?

I would not say of myself that I'm an advanced reader, especially since I don't know what it means exactly. But I think that any deck can be learned by any student at any level, its only a matter of how much work you are willing to put into it. Yes, obviously some decks are more challenging than otjers, but that doesn't and shouldn't mean that new readers shouldn't read with them. Its all a matter of how you connect with a certain deck.

If you have no draw to the Thoth deck does that mean you still have to know all about it to be advanced in other styles of decks? Just curious.

Of course not. Every deck is different. Anyway, you don't have to do anything. Thats why its Tarot and not the Bar Exam

Majecot I started this thread after I looked at the Haindl Tarot in the Tarot Cards section.
I don't consider myself an advanced reader but I can read not to bad with these. I've studied Runes & I Ching some which are shown on these cards.
