I have recently met some1 in my home town who is willing to help me understand the way of tarot.. on a 1 to 1 basis.... :|
As a novice craving for the knowledge I was wonder if this is something recommended :|
And for all those who read this... no it isnt the same person as I asked advice about in another thread.....
This new person... I vagley know.. through a friend.... we just got talking this morning and ended up talking tarot :):)...
I basically just asked her if she could help and before finishing asking.. we were exchanging mobile numbers.... shes already called and we have arranged to meet tomorra morning... :):)
When I told her I'd been told tarot is dangerous.... she replied point of fact.. "no tarots not dangerous.. oija boards are dangerous".........

Hi,
Nice to meet you. Since you don't know this person well, IMO, it would be best if you met in public places to learn until you get to know them better. While there may not be anything to worry about, it is best to exercise caution for safety's sake. How much does this person really know about tarot?
Why not take a beginner tarot class and learn on your own at the same time? There are many wonderful teachers and classes out there.
Joy to you,
Maralee

Well, this is a good start. She sounds like someone who is eager to talk about Tarot and is probably excited to find someone who she can share her passion with.
If you wonder about anything she tells you, you can come over and ask our opinion.
Hey, why don't you tell her about Aeclectic and tell her to come over and join us! Tell her we've already heard about her and will be happy to welcome her. :)

thank you Lady Eclipse..:) for your rapid reply...
Thank you for your advice..... I not sure wot IMO means thou:confused:
I hear wot u are saying and understand it all.....
finding a public place in this small town and it not being broadcast about.. would be difficult.. especially as she has a small child .....
I have also looked into classes today.. but unfortunately... (as a single parent on a low income) It turns out that to do a class in tarot.. i would first have to do 2 courses in physic awareness and developement first.. at 40 quid each.... and then another 40 ish quid for the actually tarot class... (plus all these classes are held 7-9pm and some distance from where i actually live:( )
I would love to do them.. but my finances just say the opposite.. especially when i am sending my little 1 to euro disney in a month with her aunt & uncle.. which has all my money tied up....
Is there anyway of learning online....:|:|

BOTA has a wonderful on-line class, which only costs about $12 US per month. I believe you get a wonderful deck that you color in yourself. It's very in-depth. It's at www.bota.org.
Also, I believe Joan Bunning has a free tarot course? Does someone know the address?
(by the way, IMO stands for "In My Opinion.")

It's http://www.learntarot.com/ and it contains the full text of Joan Bunning's book "Learning the Tarot".

Its good to study Tarot with somebody else, but you have to be careful. Ultimately you are the one who is going to have to deal with readings on your own, and beware this person, or anyonefor that matter, doesn't overshadow your insights and intuition.

I think that Barnes and Noble offers an internet course as well.
No reason not to give her a chance. But since she is unknown, just proceed slowly.

My advice - take what you learn from this person with a grain of salt. Sometimes when people teach, they do so in black and white, meaning that they feel there way is the right way and that is all there is to it. A local shop around here has a guy who bills himself as the great reader has people believing he knows all.
Tarot, like all things in life, is a learning experience - an evolution sprouting from your own soul. To me, you have to feel what the cards are telling you. Otherwise you will be a robot who just recites book meanings for the cards.
Here is what I did to learn the Tarot, and I realize it is probably not financially possible for you, but with online resources, especially here at Aeclectic, you may be able to modify it.
I have many Tarot books I accumulated over the years. When I got serious, I took a blank pad of paper and started, card by card, writing down the keywords for each. I only used the books which I thought were the most lucid. The end result was a comprehensive list of keywords which flowed and made sense.
These days I try to read intuitively - I try to run with what my subconcious tells me when I see a card. I still revert back to what I learned, but not always. In fact, there are four pieces of literature I always keep with me:
1) Joan Bunning's Learning The Tarot, which, as already stated, is online.
2) Jana Riley's Tarot Dictionary and Compendium, which I believe is out of print, but takes each card and gives a definition from 15 noted Tarot writers.
3) Thirteen's course which is online right here at AT. I have to give Thirteen his/her due (sorry Thirteen, still do not know your gender, hehe), the principles outlined, especially in the Fool's Journey, was the first to make sense to me.
4) My own notes, neatly printed from the computer, along with a little fold-out cheat sheet I bought in Manhattan last year which shows all 78 RWS cards just to refresh my memory in my brain-dead moments.
If you (or anyone else) would like a copy of the keyword list I made, I would be happy to email it to you. It is in MS Word format - just PM me and I will email it to you if you give me your email address. It is not the "end-all", but something I like to refer to from time to time.
Hope some of this made sense.
Dan

I have been tinkering with the idea of teaching an online class for a loooooooong time... a lot of classes charge.. While I understand the need for the cost.. I don't really think learning should cost anything.. I will help you learn in anyway that I can :) I have taught many people here in my home town.. but never online.. Do you think very many would be interested? :) I can teach you through pm's or emails (emails are probably better, as I can type longer and don't have to worry about my box filling up).. if you want me to teach you, pm me with your email :)
I also second what Lady Eclipse has said.. :) Its best to be safe.

Forget classes. Why? I’ll tell you in a second.
One to one learning is good…as long as that person does not attempt to convence you that their way is the only way.
In classroom situations, usually you are told there is a right way and a wrong way, teachers (like most authors) tend to want to force your head into a box of their making; they want you to read ‘like them’.
Anybody who tells you THE way to Tarot…is feeding you a line, in order to pump up their own ego.
You can learn right here…we are all friends here.

You have had a lot of good advice here. You don't really need a 'teacher', you can learn everything you need right here with us and no-one will charge you. By all means talk to your friends but make them two-sided discussions. Don't let anyone tell you what is right and what is wrong.
Ask her who taught her? How many readings has she done for others? These type of questions would be a good pointer for a start. She may well know less than you do. Its nice though to have someone to have discussions with on a one to one basis.
Thirteens basics on here are a really good starter and then study your cards and make up your mind what they mean to you. Let us know how you get on.

It sounds like your new friend is just as interested to have someone share her passion with. I'm sure you have your own mind and can decide whether or not she's trying to lead you her way. Just look at it as a opportunity or experience meeting with this person. Afterall you did ask to share tarot with someone, and she appeared. She could be really lovely.
But learning is different for everyone, and have your tarot journal really does help. And everyone here is just wonderful.

I think it's great that you are extending yourself as a student of tarot to a variety of "teachers" (including everyone at AT) I think it's a good idea to learn as much as you can from different sources and weed out the things that can hold you back. If you have loads of info, your tarot understanding can lead you down an open path. Good Luck :)
